Anyone Thinking of the WSOP 2024 Yet?

i know this is a long shot, but......

i'm looking for 1 or more players who may be driving to/from WSOP 2024 from texas and wanting to stay around 2 weeks or so. i am driving out there due to fear of flying & medical issues, and need another person(s) to drive with. i (42m) will be staying with a buddy of mine (25m), at horseshoe. we are chill, no partying on the strip, no slots/pits, just focus on poker during trip like real poker junkies. we have gone for a few years now and really enjoy the series. mostly cash players, with some tournaments mixed in. if you want to room with us, that would make it cheaper for everyone (if not, that's cool).

i have made the drive for many years now. it's a 2-day drive, ~10 hours per day. but maybe can make it a super long 1-day drive with myself and 1 or 2 more people to split driving. obviously we would need to meet beforehand, make sure we get along. will be using my vehicle (roomy, nice 4-door truck). i will eat most gas expenses, since this would primarily be accommodating me.

right now, looking at leaving ~May 29-returning ~June 12. but can be flexible. PM me if interested. looking to get booked soon.

I changed my mind and decided not to go. I was kind of dreading the fact that the most likely outcome is that I go to Vegas and blow 10 grand and then fly home. I wasn't really prepared in the way that I thought I'd be. Mixing tournament study with cash game study is a bit overwhelming and I just fell behind on my tournament preflop charts. Also there was $90,835,600 paid out last year out of $100,430,000 which is close to 10% rake. If you factor in travel expenses and taxes on the winnings it just doesn't seem worth it for all the trouble. Taxes make the rake effectively much higher, maybe double. Haven't done the exact math, but it is pretty insane.

I kind of wanted to go for the experience, but the above was stressing me out and I just really hate losing more than I enjoy winning.

Not sure if anyone finds this helpful, but I compiled all the prize positions for last year. Odds of making the money are slightly better than 14% which is a little worse than 1/6 of the time.

Good luck to anyone still deciding to go. Maybe I'll go some other year when I'm better prepared.

I would prefer if people actually took a closer look at the actual numbers than just googling what the prize pool from last year. I suppose there are some other things that could be factored in such as certain players getting free entries into the WSOP for life and what not. Perhaps that is where the missing 2.6 million is, seems like quite a leap though. Perhaps a journalist got it wrong and a bunch of other journalists just copied that one.

I’m not entirely sure what your point is. Did you not realize there was rake or taxes? Why was this an epiphany and why do you think others don’t realize that?

The total fees is 7% on a $10,000 buyin. Not 10%.

You are correct. I added an extra 4 in the excel spreadsheet by mistake so that it was 1508/10443 instead of 10043. I'm not going to repost the chart though at this point, because I probably made another mistake somewhere and I would rather not further accentuate the fact that I am ******ed. At this point, trust the spreadsheet at your own risk.

Yea, I had a nice time in 2024. Still have some ideas about how to improve my experience in 2025.

I came away with a couple major thoughts:

- I'm probably done with 10-handed poker, which also means I'm probably done with <$1k tournaments at the WSOP. Maybe I'll make 1-2 exceptions for the great budget offerings like the Salute or Deepstack Championship, but overall this price range is not a great poker experience. The daily deepstacks are especially bad. 10-handed nitfests with bad rake. The nightlies have horrible structure and small starting stacks. If you are looking for low budget NLHE, I think going off-site is often going to be the better choice. Just because an event has WSOP branding doesn't mean it's going to offer a premium experience. On the other hand...

- The WSOP is unique for its international player pool and mixed game offerings. The opportunity to play good events at mid-high stakes in these other games is something that sets the WSOP apart from most series that run in LV throughout the year. If you just want NLHE, you can get that more often than not at Wynn and/or Venetian. If you want to play some 2-7 or badugi, there won't be much on the calendar outside of the WSOP.

I want to learn some other variants over the next 12 months and maybe try a $1.5k next summer in something that isn't NLHE.

Some multiple of 10, obviously.

I assume WSOP files the appropriate tax paperwork on cash mega winnings.

Of course, with the traditional STTs there was basically no cash winnings (other than the breakage), so IRS paperwork did not need to be filed.

With all that, I am 100% in favor of bringing back the SNGs.
