The costs of trans visibility
Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....
For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and
. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her. What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.
We need to do better.

We don't care about "what most people say," unless we are idiots.
Definitions are generally based on the meanings intended by the majority of people using the terminology.
I don't love the term 'mental illness' but I accept its common usage, meaning a condition which could be improved by psychiatric treatment.
That makes the conversation more difficult, but I am sympathetic and can maybe (?) get us to a mutual understanding.
I'll try, but it is the end of the year and I've got to drink because that is the rules.
Remind me if I don't get back to you about this specific topic. You are nice, but I sometimes get super obsessed about volatility futures and am neglectful.
Everyone is "on the spectrum". It's a spectrum.
You had me bro. Excellent trolling!
You’re an idiot. The disorder has a spectrum. It’s not a spectrum that people fall into. Man education in this country sucks.
Marking you down as “no.”
Again, for the people who want to use innate, please explain specifically what transgender people are connecting to, receiving this pure insight into their true gender.
You seem to just want to use innate in a way that is negatively defined, meaning not biological or socially influenced.
Do the gender claims of transgender people go beyond the level of convicted belief? If so, you can’t just say “innate” and expect that to be a sufficient explanation.
Then I’m marking you down as “yes.”
i'll let my girl shania break it down for you craig
If you take the test you get a score right?
So you’re saying all humans are on the autism spectrum? Do society a favor, please do not procreate.
Do you know what the term "spectrum" means?
This is from memory but I'm pretty sure for the autism test you are assigned a score from 1 to 35, with somewhere around 28 being considered autistic for males.
Do you think someone who scores 27 isn't on the spectrum?
It doesn't mean that someone who scores 27, or 22, or 14 or whatever is autistic. But when you get a score that can be arranged linearly, then you're on a spectrum.
It means the d disorder exists as a spectrum ranging from debilitated, nonverbal individuals to high functioning people. Are you really this stupid?
No that is not what the word spectrum means.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism_s...
“Autism is clinically regarded as a spectrum disorder, meaning that it can manifest very differently in each person.”
Now cut your f*cking balls off, please.
You aren't saying anything that I disagree with.
Dude. You said everyone is on the spectrum. Those were your exact f’ing words. Please stop playing dumb.
Everyone is on the spectrum.
That doesn't mean they have Autism spectrum disorder.
What exactly do you think the autism test measures?

I scored 25 which is around where I've scored in the past-- which, while I'm not autistic-- still gives me a score and places me on a spectrum.
The AQ doesn’t really offer much insight into specific autistic traits, as it only outputs a single score. Any scores of 26 or greater indicate the presence of autistic traits; the higher the score, the more autistic traits you have.
Furthermore, 79.3% of autistic people score 32 or higher (whereas only 2% of controls do), so scores of 32 and above are particularly significant. The AQ is particularly sensitive in distinguishing between autistic and non-autistic adult females, as 92.3% of autistic females scored 32 or higher (compared to 1% of the control group).[9]
Do note that no single test is conclusive, and not every autistic person necessarily scores above the defined threshold on each test. If you score low on the AQ but still think you could be autistic, try taking a few other autism tes
Jesus Christ you’re clueless. I honestly hope you’re trolling.
i feel like a lot of those questions are bs and/or outdated
like when is the last time anyone needed to remember a phone number?
definitely feel like there could easily be a lot of false positives there - oh you like museums, you are autistic
That iss on the spectrum. Around somewhwre betwen moderate and severe.
You punks know that test is not diagnostic for autism, right?
