Fancy Play Syndrome

Fancy Play Syndrome

I opened with A7c in late position in an 8 handed game.

SB three bets and BB folds. SB is a solid player who doesn’t get out of line very often.

Flop comes A 2 9.

SB checks and I check.

I expected the SB to bet regardless of the flop. I would normally bet in this spot but I decided to check hoping to extract a bet or two from the villian on the turn or river.

Turn comes 6 and I now have a flush draw.

He checks again and I bet. He quickly check raises and bets the river blind.

I miss my flush draw.

Action is on me. What’s my best play?

Solid player betting blind?

Call I guess but I’m not expecting to win very often. It’s nice to not block broadway flush draws.

Personally I would bet flop and check back turn.

You called and he had KK?

Yeah, SB should be betting range here on flop. You should take note of what he did this with. Some players tend to do this with super nutted hands like AA; others with hands that are terrified of the ace like KK or QQ or totally missed. Rarely is it a balance of the two.
