AQs 28bb in MP open - smaller stack shove

Hi all,

I was in a large field MTT a few days ago - The GGpoker mystery bounty main event in case anyone knows it. A spot where i basically got myself out of the tournament was the following:

Already ITM, a little below average stack, sitting with 28bb in MP with AQhh (8 handed). Was really not getting any hands and was happy everyone folded to me. I open to 3BB.

Everyone folds to BTN - one of the shortest stacks at the table - with 22bb and he shoves all in. Blinds fold and action is on me.

Regarding the tournament: It was a 2 day tournament and this was day 2 and everyone was ITM already. The prize increment was very very small still, so very insignificant if i survive another 1.000 people busting. It was a mystery bounty with over 500k total bounties

The question is what to do if:

1) this were a normal tournament
2) Mystery bounty tournament and since I cover I have a chance at a prize between $7 and $100.000 (surviving another 2.000 people busting would have probably gotten me around 7-8 bucks)

Since I was in situation 2) , I chose to shove, he showed up with QQ and held - although it was a very exciting flop with two hearts.

Nevertheless, I am curious if i punted. I would say given the bounty it was a good call, but i want to double check. And i assume in a normal tournament this would be open fold to a jam.

Would also appreciate any thoughts on any mystery bounty strategy. I was playing very conservatively before to preserve my chips, but since i was covering only 2 more people at my table and as time goes by i will cover no one, I think there needs to be a moment where you just take your stand.

Kind of disappointing that I got 0 bounties, and the regular prize was indeed very small compared to the buy-in.

Very standard call after opening 3x and with bounties in play makes it even easier. Even if you opened 2x you have to call since he can be shoving worse or with a flip. Without bounties I would need some reads but default is to call most and fold vs nits.

Easy call with a huge field left/ no icm considerations

Sorry you lost

Thank you both, good to know!

Open to 2BB....I am all for opening bigger sizings when 100+ deep, but at this stack depth it is quite bad to use 3x

As played this is an easy call with a bounty in play, and a shrug call without it. You need to be good about 42% of the time for CeV, which is a common equity needed for these big shoves.

One easy trick here is that unless you are dominating at least some hands in the Villains shoving range, you will usually only be in the high 30s for equity. Does Villain shove AJ/KQ here? If so, slam dunk call. If not, you need the extra equity from the bounties to make this a call.
