In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

Plus Bibles usually smell weird 😀

Usually religious people aren't fans of having the bible read in school. It's not like christians even agree among themselves. And is some fundie moron parent gonna get upset when their kids come home and say the bible doesn;t contain any first hand accounts of jesus or that post resurrection appearances are either contradictory or just plain crazy..... like Paul casually mentioning that a resurrected jesus appeared to 500 people at the same time and no gospel writer either knew about it or thought it was worth mentioning.

There's a guy named Bart Ehrman who is a great public intellectual on the bible and history and stuff.

He has a good line on this. He teaches at UNC and most of his students are evangelical, or similar. Obviously smart kids who can read challenging stuff.

He always asks how many have read the bible. It's always a minority. He says, "So you believe that God wrote a book, but you haven't read it?"

Florida Department of Health recently issued a warning about beaches due to potential fecal pollution,

DeSantis claimed that the Florida Department of Health “ shouldn’t be vested with the power to close
beaches even if it determines those beaches are rife with hazardous materials that could harm beachgoers.

It shouldn’t surprise you that this is the same guy who cut funding for stormwater
drainage while residents in his state were being battered by a tropical storm.
Cruel and unusual lawmaking is DeSantis’ modus operandi.

Just another day in the life of Ron DeSantis: Florida’s anti-“woke” crusader.
Owning the libs and undermining government institutions,
all so Floridians can keep their right to backstroke in poopy water that may make them ill.

Have you seen the size of that thing?

It starts out okay, but then you have about an hour of who begat whom and that's a tough slog. Meanwhile, your smartphone is right there with 27 new notifications. More than two dozen potential dopamine hits!

God just cannot compete with Silicon Valley brain candy.

Eh, they'll be fine.

Milwaukee has been dumping literal millions of gallons of untreated raw sewage into Lake Michigan for decades every time it rains. Our beaches are like 3% feces by weight and we're doing great!

Rudy Giuliani, once billed as "America's mayor.", officially disbarred in New York.

He's also been recommended for disbarment in Washington, D.C.;
he’s still facing a RICO indictment in Georgia and another
election-related indictment in Arizona; and he’s filed for bankruptcy

I'm sure his friend Donald Trump will reward his unwavering loyalty and help him out in his time of need.

He’s a piece of garbage, just like Trump. Eventually, like all garbage, they’ll end up in a landfill where they belong. Hopefully soon.

RFK Jr.’s response to allegations of sexual assault: ‘I am who I am’.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sexually assaulted a babysitter he employed.

“Listen, I’ve said this from the beginning:
I am not a church boy, I had a very, very rambunctious youth.”

He was a very rambunctious youth, when he was 44 years old and married with children.

lets see if she gets the Tara Reade treatment and her life destroyed or if the media goes #BelieveWomen.

I'd take a Smart Horndog in the White House over someone who has been brain dead over their entire life of service.

Depends on if she can keep her story straight. It doesn't really matter though, as the accused is not denying anything and was never going to be elected to any office regardless.

His writing/videos are pretty good for popular level learning. It is pretty surprising how little christians care about christian texts/history given the extreme claims many make about it.

Christianity, as it evolved, begins with denial of death. Where Buddhism, Stoicism, Epicureanism etc. Confront death, grapple with it and help us come to terms with it, Christianity (as it exists) just says "Don't bother with that! Join our club and you and yours will live forever in total happiness, while all the people we don't like are tortured forever."

I think this attracts people who just want to believe whatever feels good to believe and sort of gives license to run with that impulse.

So they just believe that Jesus/the Bible said whatever they would like for them to have said.

If they are the studious type, they will go through the trouble of digging up some random passage and distorting it's meaning to their purposes.

These are also the kinds of people who think, e.g., that homeless people want to be homeless. Problem solved!

Not being the amazing athiest. There's tons of good and endlessly fascinating stuff too. IDK if there is an afterlife. But I think this is a major flaw.

One of the many other flaws is that some Christians assert that you get to heaven by believing in god (whose blessing has never been granted to the moral majority but to the spiritual minority) , while others talk about having to lead a moral life (harder for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle).

Seems like these Christians don't really know what their god wants.

At least now we know he's a legit Kennedy.

France has scarpped abit more more time together. They better make wise use of it.

We're now getting a much clearer picture of how many actual seats the parties have won. Based on a calculation by French newspaper Le Monde, which uses government polling data, we’ve come up with this chart.

It shows the New Popular Front leftist alliance as the biggest group in the new National Assembly, followed by President Macron’s centrist Ensemble party and, in third place, the far-right National Rally and its allies.

We really need Lucium back to explain what in the world is actually going on in France politics, and whether this is what Macron was hoping for or if something went wrong.

Macron has clearly got what he wanted. He has changed the conversation from the far right winnign to the far right losing. He has stopped them consolidating on their victory and demanding an election they would believe they would win. He has given the far right the best chance to disintegrate under internal squabbles

He has made the best of a very bad stuation but it doesn't change the underlying realities. he has bought some time but hard to see how him making any use of it.

That's the last person who could explain anything accurately. Fascists are like that you know.

“some folks need killing. … It’s a matter of necessity!”:
North Carolina Lt. Gov takes Christian nationalism to dangerous low

the Republican nominee for governor, stood on a church pulpit and called for
the extrajudicial killing of people he considered to be enemies of Christian America.

GOP and the religious right have mainstreamed calls for violence in the name of Christian nationalism.

“You cannot tell me we can separate our government from the laws of God, from the Bible,”
said Robinson. “Our Constitution is based on the word of God, I don’t care what anybody says.”

It’s all part of the MAGA quest to upend democracy and replace it with far-right authoritarianism.

Not sure if this is sarcasm, or proof that Luciom was able to fool at least one person into believing he is an expert on every topic he posted about, as he spent SO much time trying to do.

Lord I was under the assumption that everyone took what Luciom said and knew the complete opposite was true.
