The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

Now in the year 2024 we have grown men advocating that people should be able to cut off their d*cks with taxpayer money when they turn 18 and now theyre called women
And if you dont agree youre a nazi
It’s bizzaro world dude

My take is they havent acheived anything in life and just want to burn it all down

My first take is you won’t last long here and my second take is you won’t be missed.

I do not have an issue with adults doing this. I think they are nuts and many will regret it but all the power to them. Though if you had told folks were going to put Tampon machines in mens washrooms and that men can get pregnant even 5 years ago people would say your nuts

The issue is adults use your money to do it. That's true even when it's private insurance that covers it, unless they pay a higher premium and the coverage isn't mandate by law.

If it is mandated by law to cover those procedures, then everyone with private insurance is paying a tad more than he would have otherwise, to cover those procedures.

Then of course, bottom surgery in particular isn't a one-off thing. While the procedure itself, if done as a lifestyle choice (like in the case of trans people choosing it), isn't health-care at all, it can then VERY often cause health issues later on which will require medication which again you will pay as a taxpayer or privately insured individual.

I don't consider people "nuts" for having what are for me bizarre preferences about their bodies. I actually dgaf in general, especially in cases like these where the choices aren't even visible so they don't damage me through bad aesthetics.

But i consider it horrific that i have to subsidize lifestyle choices.

Than shouldn't private insurance pay for boob jobs as well including Universal Health care?

If lifestyle cosmetic surgery wasn't seen typically as bad by feminism, and instead had radical leftist activists on it's cultural side, it would be covered by taxpayer money / legal mandates to private insurers, that's how it works.

tampon machines in mens rooms?? what are they? nuts?

if they get that in mens rooms i want mens masturbators in womens washrooms!

call it fair.

crazy americans.... with 16 they get boobjobs as if they walk into a grocery market. with 18 butt implants, and to their sweet 16 they get a nosejob.
.... and now.... they just get a sex change. cause they feel like it... lamo
cant get any more ridiculous.

by uke_master P

Did you actually read it? It doesn’t “advocate” for bottom surgery of 15 year olds.

You’re right, WPATH removed age restrictions altogether.

by Bobo Fett P

Lying trolls gunna lie and troll. Even sadder when you use multiple accounts to do so.

What am I lying about? Try answering a question. You ramble more than Trump.

And I’m still waiting for the “psychiatrist” to answer how exactly people die if they do not take hormones or puberty blockers. I don’t take those meds and I’m still alive. In fact, I don’t know anyone who takes those meds and I know a significant amount of people who have lived long, healthy lives.

Plenty of US health insurers cover cosmetic surgeries, even boob jobs, if they are a result of a cancer removal treatment. You are confusing such covered treatment with elective cosmetic surgeries.

It's been answered, more than once, and I posted that I agreed with those responses. But if it only counts if it comes from me, here you go. You said:

Quite honestly, his behavior causes everyone here to seriously doubt he’s a psychiatrist.

And of course, "everyone" does not seriously doubt it, which you knew already since you told us you read the entire thread. In fact, I expect you could count the number of people who "seriously doubt" it on one hand, with fingers to spare.

But of course I expect you knew all of this already as well, and are just doing some really weak trolling.

by Luciom P

it is far less important, people watch it far less, what am I missing? it's like WNBA vs NBA if not an even bigger gap

The really simple explanation you were given:

by Didace P

I think "don't matter" in this context reads as "not important" or "not worthwhile". I hope that's not what you meant.

Your post above indicates that you believe it's "far less important" and that "people watch it far less" - the latter is obviously true, and the former is certainly an opinion you're welcome to have. Both are quite different than "don't matter", which of course is also an opinion you're entitled to have, but pushback shouldn't be surprising as it's a pretty extreme opinion. Whether or not it matters to you or I, it matters a great deal to those athletes and many other people.

Fine. I mistyped. Instead of "everyone" I should have said "the vast majority of posters..."

Still not correct.

Which would also be incorrect, and almost certainly a lie because I can't imagine how you could believe this either.

But now I really need to stop replying to this obvious trolling; if you were truly looking to have a genuine conversation it wouldn't have taken multiple posts to get here.

How are you subsidizing American insurance claims in Italy

by coordi P

In Italy as everywhere with a Publix healthcare system it is even worse, we pay directly, so it's absolutely indispensable to not treat lifestyle choices as an health issue.

I included the part on insurance to pre empt bad faith arguments that the same reasoning wouldn't apply to the USA.

And in general in these topics countries move like a wave, if the USA starts legalizing cannabis others do and so on.

With the advent of libsoftiktok there’s absolutely zero moral high-ground for the anti-trans people on movement tactics.

lol

Not a good look for ****ing idiots who clearly are not equipped to cope with differing opinions and are empowered to spread their idiocy by today's ability to reach almost anyone, anytime, anonymously.

FYP.

And these idiots exist all over the political spectrum, but most frequently on the fringes.

If by "trans activists", you mean idiots like the people sending death threats, I agree. Not only are actions like this despicable and to be condemned, but they could empower some to jump all over this and use it as one more log for the culture war bonfire, rather than simply condemning it for what it is - the actions of idiots that are relatively few in number. But if that is what you meant, I'd suggest a little different term than "trans activists", as some would take that to mean a much broader group, that only the worst of the online derposphere will try to paint with a broad brush.

In general, the pro-trans crowd is extremely aggressive toward those who disagree with them. They use soft words like “ally” to describe those who share their alternate reality with them and call people who prefer to accept reality as it is “transphobes.” This use of loaded language only shows just how much these people are not all accepting of others and inclusive as they claim to be.
Quite honestly, whenever I’m in the vicinity of more than one “ally” who may quite possibly be armed an dangerous, I fear for my life simply because of beliefs I hold that are backed by peer-reviewed studies.

aw lil snowflake, it’s going to be ok, the bad allies like me aren’t going to take your candy.

Pretty sure many public entities get death threats on X after they say anything

That it happened on X it could just as easily be bot farms designed to harm the trans base. Welcome to 2024. Your brain is putty

Its probably a bit telling how much you care about this woods lass yet the thread piled on to bully khelif endlessly. Never mind that the khelif rhetoric could have legitimately put her in danger
