Ukraine-Russia War Take 2
Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:
The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.
When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.
It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.
But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.
If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

Can you please explain to me in writing (no video pls, that's a terrible content form to discuss arguments) why the Russian economy hasn't tanked as much as the Iranian did when we implemented sanctions

Russia had significant investments from the West when the war started. When sanctions started Putin made it illegal to move any profits out of Russia and seized the assets of many of these companies. This was a significant amount of money.
Russia has a sovereign wealth fund which was worth nearly 200 billion USD at the start of the war.
Russia still has income coming in from its many natural resources. (This has been reduced significantly but is still substantial.)
Russia is able to keep its economy afloat by injecting the money from these three major areas into the economy. Until these sources dry up, Russia's economy will be ok, although jumping from crisis to crisis.
It is the equivalent of someone who was making a million USD a year losing their job in a way that makes them unemployable. They likely have enough savings to keep them afloat for some time, but eventually those savings will dry up. Furthermore they would probably need to seriously change their expenses to account for the fact that they are now unemployable. On the outside they might seem fine for a long time even if they tried to keep the same lifestyle, but their savings would be plummeting and eventually they would go bankrupt.
Russia has not curbed their expenses. They've done the opposite: they are competing with their own private sector, driving wages up. They are hiring mercenaries and have increased the wages for contract soldiers to over 3x normal monthly wages in order to attract people to meat assaults. They are paying substantial money to restore old soviet equipment which they send to be blown up in Ukraine, instead of spending that money on goods which can be sold for a profit in international trade. Russia has the funds to support this for a pretty long time, but eventually it will catch up with them.

There's been a degree of bi-partisan support for it, not least since Mr Trump met the Polish prime minister (a fellow rightist and very pro-Ukraine) and was persuaded to stop generating noise against the bill.
