SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.

Sign up with /in below if you want to play.

In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).

2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.

The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).

We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"

Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.

The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.

Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.

Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words

We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)

I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

Right, and like you mentioned early on, we would’ve gotten boxer names suggested the first turn of it was something like that.

the only words that could possibly be connected with mouth and forehead:

face
wrinkles
skin
bloody
bruise
hair (but mouth is mustache/beard)
other face items (nose/eye)

seems like most likely is face or a face item, like nose/mouth/eyes/cheek/ears/temple/scalp/eyelids/eyebrows/eyelashes

but again if it's face or eye or nose or etc. then why not mention nose or eye (whichever it isn't)?

seems like people would just be throwing out face parts if it's any of that

d1 said we were 30-40% there so it's probably not part of the actual mouth (teeth/lips/etc.) and we aren't completely off (it's not giraffe), but we also aren't that close; percentages are tough tho so hard to gain much insight over that

the posting before cluing:

zeus: f8 (forehead?) ok; very good k6 (kisser)
d1: k6 may lead to wrong word; likes f8 (forehead) better; b4 picks up if misses
ervin: not sure what f8 is, but can think of various f words
zeus: don't see how kisser can lead them wrong
d1: yeah just bold k6 since nobody else posting

[kisser clued]

d1: 30-40% there; let's do forehead; there's an s6 that def gets it but let's hold that card if possible
zeus: yeah do f8
bolt: not sure what f8 is so all about sure s6
d1: I think f8 is sure thing now; S is a better letter for future
ervin: yeah they are on the way there

[forehead clued]

so we were on the way there, but also 30-40%
forehead is a 'sure thing' now
s6 def gets it
and from earlier, b4 could be helpful after forehead

so we need to figure out why forehead is a sure thing (maybe if it's face) and figure out what s6 and b4 could be (also various f words apparently from ervin)

s6: shaved/shaver

but this with kisser would get us to mustache or beard, which doesn't work with forehead; eyebrow is better for forehead and would be why no e3 mention, but eyebrow doesn't work with mouth

so probably not shaved/shaver

you know, maybe kisser just means 'face' and not specifically mouth in british slang; like mug or something

let's think about if kisser is a way of cluing 'face' without the F card (or because face is ours) and see if that helps us get there

so our clues are: (face) + forehead

and we have s6 and b4 also

b4 could be ball or brow and the word is just eye, which works with face and forehead...and getting punched often gives you black eye, etc

s6 would then be? .... seeing

eye could be it (though why not s5 for sight? seeing seems a bit weird); also no mention of unibrow for U (though that could be an oversight)

also bifocal seems obvious for eye

what if the word is freckle?

meh then s4 for skin or something would be in play

by IBeDrummin P

If we’re thinking face, then B4 could be book

They were between F8 and S6 and calling them both a sure thing.

F8 = forehead
S6 = selfie?

A forehead is part of a face, as is a mouth. It is curious that nose wasn’t suggested, seems like a big miss if this is face.

Did you see this post?

And yeah, if it’s face, I find it insane that Erv would have various f words while no one having nose or eyes come to mind.

Like, I can’t believe its face. But I also can’t imagine us guessing anything else.

yeah I saw that post and think it's a good argument for face

maybe just overthinking it with why they didn't mention nose/eye/etc for face

they also didn't mention face as f4 but went with forehead, and kisser could be a stand-in for face

it could just be that simple

I think we go face soonish if don't think of something else; I don't want to drag this out; but I feel like we are missing something so maybe we give it another hour or two and then fire face mask or something if we don't figure out the solution

assuming it is face and then reading the recap of what they all said, it does make sense; maybe just people not around, etc. for no mention of eye/nose clues

either forehead is to get us to go higher than the mouth or it's forehead because face isn't allowed since face is the target

also explains why he thought kisser was so good if he uses it for face rather than mouth

if not face, then eye is next best guess, but I don't think it fits as well as face

so then:
face mask
facebook
face/off
other?

I get why we do the two word thing, but it only makes sense to me if it makes sense given the context. Bolding something like face mask given the clues kisser and forehead seems no more advantaged than bolding face.

yeah, so doesn't really matter much because super low odds it's more than just 'face' and if it is, we won't hit it most likely

but still best practice, so should we bold face mask and then either be done or get another clue?

face mask

Yeah, face is correct. That was some elite overthinking lol.

As far as not mentioning n4/e3 goes...I thought the word was easy enough to get in 1 or 2 turns, so it seemed rather unnecessary to just spew a bunch of clues I never would've considered using. Forehead hit fewer words, so I liked it better. Simple as that.

S6 was smiley

nice

luckily there weren't good alternatives, so the 'we are just overthinking this' won out in the end

Round 4:

Cards used: 4

Guessers: nich/bolt

The Board:

B | DL | C | JOVW | T | A | S

The target word:
someone please pick a random number in your head between 1 and 439 and then look at that row in the google doc and pm ibedrummin/doctor zeus/d1iabolical/filthyvermin/amazingervin the word

Nice work, guys.

Part of the fun for me is working through more than just the words that are going to be bolded. Makes sense for us not to talk about the middle cards, but as a game of incomplete information, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to mention word connections on usable cards that help the guessers. But I get what you’re saying.

I probably never would’ve guessed face over mouth with the kisser clue even knowing there was an E3 and N4. I would’ve convinced myself E3 was for eat. Or we could’ve thought it was ear and been led to head.

S6 was smiley

Good work saving the S card for later. 👍

Kisser is also slang for face, as well as mouth. But yeah, kisser hitting mouth so hard was why I didn't really want to clue it. But when zeus said he couldn't see how it could hit anything else, I thought maybe it was a different word.

Only having 2 clues to work off really wasn't ideal though, sorry about that. It was a shame there wasn't more input that round.

I am quite sure facehole is not a word tho haha.

Yeah forehead may get it in one as we don’t go mouth there

Prolly go facial hair to get both face and hair 😀

Not your fault; you were talking; others were away or whatever

Facehole is in wiktionary but not dictionary.com so prolly slang
