The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

Uh but scientists haven’t discovered there is a “gender gene”, so why would an expert lie about it just because you would find that somehow more satisfactory.

And if you want to whine about moderation take that to the mod thread!

how does a 13 yaer old get his dick chopped off?
wtf? he never had an orgasm, how can he opt out of something he never experienced?? he will never have an orgasm in his life again.

This transphobic conspiracy theory is quite something, yikes.

How much money we talking about and what is your evidence?

I'll make the same point I once made about the anti-vaxxers. If it was true that those advocating for gender-affirming care and those advocating for the safety of vaccines were deliberately lying for the purpose of making money, you'd expect a massive split where those who could make money on it would support it and those who couldn't would not. But we don't see this heterogeneity. All sort of people who aren't private gender clinic endocrinologists or aren't Pfizer assert the same thing.

So your completely evidence-less claims of it being all about the money don't carry much weight.

No, 13 year old having their penis chopped off is somewhere between non-existent and incredibly incredibly incredibly rare (and likely with other medical context needed)

I also think uke tried to insert a fake 'implied gotcha'.

You don't think this:

Indeed, as awesome as it is that trans people are getting more of the medical care they require, your article says:

The study found that a fraction of gender-affirming surgeries – about 7% – were done on patients ages 12 to 18, but some experts think that number sounds high. Wright said the majority of these surgeries tended to be among 17- and 18-year-olds and were the less-invasive procedures like breast or chest procedures.

Sorry, you haven't even found one example of "13 year old had penis cut off" yet so keep looking! you got this! It is going to be vanishingly rare.

Of course per my discussions with Browser none of this we are allowed to talk about, as he seems to believe that anything other than a genetic basis for gender is delegitimizing trans people.

Actually I said nothing about not being allowed to discuss it and have never suggested there was a genetic basis for transgender either. In fact we were having a discussion where you suggested topics that I think are used to delegitimize transgender people. But that discussion got cut short when you told me to **** off and got bannedfor that.

Sadly, the mod thread has been closed for comments. All future discussion is to be done in secret.

Which I said because you accused me of having bigoted motives. Busy doing touristy stuff but I'll respond to the other aspects of this post later.

You guys could always try having a good-faith discussion of transgender politics instead of endlessly trying to de-legitimize and **** on people.

If your over the age of 18 all the power to you to chop off anything you want. Any doctor that performs a surgery on a minor should lose his license and be jailed

You don't think Washoe’s fantasies about 13 year old dicks is a legitimate topic and worthy of discussion?

by lozen P

If your over the age of 18 all the power to you to chop off anything you want. Any doctor that performs a surgery on a minor should lose his license and be jailed

Consider this scenario. You have a 17.5 year old trans man. They transitioned years ago, been taking hormones for years, and been working with a team of health professionals for years with the support of a loving family. Nevertheless, their acute gender dysmorphia had led to sustained suicide ideation and they, their families, and their doctors all believe that a top surgery is a medically safe possible step.

You think a doctor that performs top surgery should.....checks notes.......go to jail but that cosmetic surgeries which has no over 18 age requirement is ok?

You think a doctor that perform

nice strawman argument

but just to play devils advocate, you deeply imply what's already been done has not helped at all

the data also implies that those who transition still commit suicide at the same, or even higher rates

is the the defintion of insanity not repeating the same process and expecting different results?

just one more surgery and everything will magically be solved?

by rickroll P

nice strawman argument

I'm failing to see the strawman - isn't that the sort of thing that lozen has spoken in favour of when he says "Any doctor that performs a surgery on a minor should lose his license and be jailed"?

the head of wpath said in an interview a few month ago, children get castrated by puberty blockers bc they never received any testosterone, they will never have an orgasm. there are no official numbers, yes that study did find 7% of the operated on were 12-17. terrible.

I don't want to quote you directly since it was in a pm, and I would have responded to this in time in the mod thread but now that's locked-- but what you very much implied was that any etiology of transgender people that was not organic "delegitimizes" them, and from your posts in the mod thread I believe (I'd have to double check)-- that that wouldn't be allowed. The implication was that only genetic/organic etiologies of transgender people would be accepted here.

The suicide rate does not drop for those that have had the surgery. European Countries have many that regret the surgeries and they halt it

Comparing the types of cosmetic surgeries to gender surgeries or puberty blockers is absurd

So to clarify, when you said "penis cut off", you actually meant "castrated by puberty blockers"?

Would you feel it was any less terrible if it turned out that 6.99% of them were 16-17 year olds?

the swedish study found after 10 years of surgery the number of suicide dramatically increases or somehting. detrans community says they were not told that ever.

the right is talking about cut of penises, in reality nobody knows any numbers as there are no official numbers. it does happen though, how often nobody knows in detail. nobody goes housing who does it.
but yea I guess I meant that, as the outcome is the same regarding orgasmns. they will not have one, not as it was intented, which is obvious when you never received any testos. as a male.

no it would not make me feel any better. if it cut off at age 12 or 17 is almost irrelevant when you consider they never receive any testos. as its blocked and then the genital gets cut off at 18 or whatnot. it leads to the same outcome. they opt out of something they never experienced and cannot regain ever.

you dont know, do you ? now we only know, through this study that the number of patients who received surgery is 7% for the age group 12-18. there are no offical numbers.
