I haven't read the book. Sorry.

No objection to it either

by spaceman Bryce P

What I get out of this is that no, none of you have read the book.

Luciom, the book isn’t ideological in nature and that is clear to anyone who has actually read the book. It’s a book that is a self discovery journey. The art is superb, and the story is honest and compelling.
The weird thing about this puritanism is that more graphic and adult content is routinely praised on here- things like the sopranos , pulp fiction etc. People play gam

You think the picture of the person with blood all over their legs is superb? It made me feel sick.

And what in the world does the book have to do with people here going to casinos?

Clearly not an objectivist, then.

Bryce i read excerpts. a few pages before and after the "blowjob on a strapon" scene, and that alone was more than enough to ask for the removal of such a book from public schools libraries up to and including high schools.

Moreover, while taste is subjective and so at the end you can claim whatever you want re the graphic quality of that book, i find the drawings very low quality. To be cleat that wouldn't be a reason to ban it for content, although if you have art classes and you teach to draw that bad, or you claim that's a good example of good drawing,
you should change your job.

How is this high quality by any definition?

And this one time, at band camp...

While it's objectively true that tasting your sister's vagina juice is semi-incestual and in poor taste, it's still better than going to casinos.

I'm pretty sure that person is tasting his?/her? own vagina juice. Still seems unnecessary to have a book recommending it though.

That person is a dude and (most) dudes don't have vaginas-- although for sure the sister does seem to think he has one so idk

That's the content part (that part might be construed as a very bad attempt to inform at least, not porn), my point was more about the quality of the drawings though which is very low, high school student level , there are plenty of memes and free comic books around which have far better drawings.

This is because i am being told by an "expert" that this is supposedly great art on top of being very useful for kids for the content.

I think we need some more examples

I wasn't very impressed by the artwork either, but it is better than I could do, and I'm no expert on art.

Trying to judge a work's quality by taking a few excerpts (most likely chosen specifically for shock value) doesn't seem like a honest approach to this.

You don't think the quality of the artwork is likely the same throughout?

lol

Sure, critiquing the artwork is fine. I mean the book as a whole.

Seems fair given that Bryce said that the art is superb.

We've been talking about the artwork this morning. I don't think any of us have a desire to read the rest of the book.

Those are the excerpts which can be find easily online because of the shock content, but the art is the same throughout the book.

It's just bad art, juvenile quality, lacking in everything that makes art good.

It's almost like the attempt to infantilize art is done on purpose even if the stated role for that book was to inform adults.

Good quality art in erotic and porn comics exists, maybe for us in Italy it's easier to know some because of Crepax, Manara, Serpieri.

Gender queer is junk compared to that, and again here i am only talking about the drawings not the rest.

As I said, fair enough if it's just judging the art.

He just read "the best parts" over and over again.

What I get out of this is that no, none of you have read the book.

It's still not objectively good. If you want to say you think it's good, or many experts think it's good, or many people like it, or anything else along those lines I'll agree with you. My only argument was you saying "objectively good" as a reason to include it in libraries. This implies that since it's been decided (by some higher authority?) that the book is good then there is no reason to not include it in school libraries and there is no possible counter argument.

Is the whole book cartoons or is there actual text in paragraph form?

Regarding a work of art being objectively good:

There are some written works that can be classified as objectively good. There are some graphic novels that can be classified as objectively good. I really don't think that the book we are talking about here can be classified as objectively good. Let's be serious here: This is some confused kid exploring his sexuality and coming to terms with being different. It has subpar art. It is a story that has been told thousands of times in more engaging ways. This isn't exactly Hamlet or Maus.

With that said, that doesn't mean that the book cannot be good, especially in a subjective sense. Bryce's life experiences has led to this book resonating with him. I don't know enough about the book to know whether it is good or bad. It may be a masterpiece for all I know. But there are few books that can be elevated to the realm of "objectively good" and we would all already know if this was one of them.

Terrible injustice happening to this forum:
