In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

I took it when I was 17 for the USMC and what stood out to me at the time were all the questions regarding various mechanical concepts and the physics questions.

As was explained to me by the recruiter, it's not about being a Marine so much as just weeding out the bottom of the intellectual bell curve.

25 years ago, I seem to recall the cutoff was the 35th percentile or so.

So, yeah, one in three people are too dumb to be a Marine.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make this personal, I was just goofing on Rittenhouse.

I know it’s out of context but it’s funny that 30% are too dumb to be a marine and yet 99% of people are allowed to have guns without supervision…..

the baseline is still the economy. but i'm sure the rights near constant attack on higher education doesn't help.. when the major selling point is paying for higher education and your target audience is bombarded with maga influencers saying don't go to college, college is a scam.. it certainly doesn't help convincing kids to sell themselves.

Worse still, people who have never seen the word "raiment" before are allowed to vote.

WAAF.

I scored 88% in the practice test, I dropped a bunch of questions on in the automotive/shop section. As Rococo sagely predicted: "d2 will fail that section, he's never done an honest day's work in his life".

This is you talking as an adult with life experience.

17 year old me, along with the couple of dudes I investigated the Marine Corps path with, thought it would be awesome to do cool military **** as one of the few, the proud. I'm sure that hasn't changed enough to matter.

The Marines, specifically, aren't having the same recruiting issues as the big three branches. They consistently meet their targets.

If you look at the papers written about the current recruiting woes of the Army and Navy, it's because something like 80% of applicants aren't eligible without a waiver due to physical/mental issues, criminal history, or outright tanking the entrance exams.

Part of me wishes I had gone through with it, but then my family wouldn't exist, and I wouldn't have enjoyed 20 years of getting dunked on at 2p2, that would be sad.

Good stuff. Would read again

this is quite possibly true. i just remember they hit my area pretty hard with the "this is how you can pay to get out of here and not end up working on the failing farm your dad works on.."

I was good at tests so I got like 98% percent tile and 130ish gt.

Has anyone seen how ****ing sadly easy the new pt test for the army is it is a joke not sure how you fail. 22 year old needs 22 minute 2 mile and 10 hand release pushups(which are kind of a joke as you can rest on the ground between each one) in 2 minutes to pass with the minimum 60

He isn't facing any criminal charges...yet.

He isn't facing any criminal charges...yet.

According to the Trumpers here, this alone is incontrovertible proof that he is innocent of everything he has ever been or will ever be accused of.

His kid got a good lawyer

Yeah he'll probably need one

Good news. Not everyone needs to go to college. So many don't ever really use their degree anyway, and are then still in debt after years of working.

Ecuador assaulted the Mexican embassy on Quito because the Mexicans were harboring a fugitive criminal Marxist ex-VP found guilty of corruption twice by Ecuador tribunals.

An "alliance of authoritarian powers" is working more closely together against Western democracies, the head of Nato has warned.

Jens Stoltenberg told the BBC that Russia, Iran, China and North Korea are increasingly aligned.

The Nato chief explained: "China is propping up the Russian war economy, delivering key parts to the defence industry, and in return, Moscow is mortgaging its future to Beijing."

Russia was providing technology to Iran and North Korea in return for ammunition and military equipment, he added.

most of the carpenters i work with make well over 100k. electricians, 150k, elevator technicians, close to 200.

they also get to work in mostly PC free environments, which is an added bonus.

add in hourly annuities (7-12/hr), pension and fully covered healthcare and its mind boggling to me that kids prefer to go to college for a 'business degree' and come out six figures in debt. lemmings.

power of builders unions in big cities. thanks for the sacrifices, men before me.

This is an understated bonus to life in the trades.

Overall, the trades are still a rough crowd. We've had open listings for carpenters for going on 4 years now and the number of DUIs and other interactions with law enforcement on the average background check is a little disturbing. I haven't seen any outside applicants under the age of 35, though. All of the zoomers we've brought in have been nepotism hires.

lmao that is true

I worked for a big plumbing outfit in the KC Metro, and a handful of my mates / coworkers had done short stints at leavenworth. Prolly for drugs or something

that's NOT acceptable... an embassy is that nations National property.

So? You can't go storming embassies due to them harbouring someone you want to bring to trial, that's ridiculous.
