ex-President Trump

ex-President Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at low-info Boomers like my religions aunts. I have two questions:

a) Is anyone here who supports Trump bothered by lies like this?

b) Does anyone know what he's even talking about here? Like is there some grain of truth that he's embellishing on bigly?

I mean one guy sells us out to the Russians and gives our spy secrets to the Chinese

The other guy doesn’t

Seems like an important topic of conversation

you love that jab so much

Only stupid people don't recognize the value of modern medicine, frankly. And that definitely includes vaccines. Particularly ones that have saved millions of lives. That said, no I don't "love that jab so much." I just appreciate modern medicine. As should you.

I'm sure this issue is front and centre in the minds of your friends when they are slinging rock on street corners.

Wreckem is just sad he didn't have any working veins left to get the jab.

If you have friends over to your house, is it so unusual to occasionally talk about what is going on in the world? Is it so unusual for some of those discussions to veer into politics?

Most of my interactions with friends and acquaintances have nothing to do with politics. But politics is sometimes a topic of discussion, especially around election time.

I don't hang out with people, on purpose, that would ever bring up politics when we are hanging out. I just really don't like that type of person.

I get irritated enough when my wife brings up what she calls "adult" things when we are trying to have a good time: things like insurance, taxes, ffs. They know how I feel about it, but they insist that that's what "grown-ups" do sometimes. I just roll my eyes and start looking at my phone until they're done. I don't hang out with friends to talk about that kind of crap.

They read stuff online and then to them those are suddenly people they know or "friends." It's their online echo chamber, but they manifest it in their minds as people they know. It's just like all the conservatives who personally know 5 people that died from tHe jAb.

Oh I agree entirely with this which is why PW’s lying bullshit is so laughable to me, but to play devil’s advocate: if you’re a liberal and choose to vote for trump in a vacuum after he has, among other things, appointed 3 Supreme Court justices and reshaped the federal judiciary to the point where they have been able to completely gut liberal rulings up to and beyond roe v Wade, spoiler alert: you were never liberal

And if you know project 2025 and still decide you want to vote trump, ya cool, you’re still not a liberal

Ultimately I don’t care, vote who you’re going to vote for, I think we as a society are too ****ing stupid to guide this country in the direction of non-hateful puritan demogauge ideology so we deserve whatever happens, but the absurdity of the MAGA chuds trying to say ‘it’s ok to vote for trump cuz you’re liberal cuz I know plenty who are gonna’ is too insulting a talking point to listen to without ruthless mockery

His proposal is even less automatic.

“President Trump has outlined the most aggressive vetting process in U.S. history, to exclude all communists, radical Islamists, Hamas supporters, America haters and public charges," Leavitt said. "He believes, only after such vetting has taken place, we ought to keep the most skilled graduates who can make significant contributions to America. This would only apply to the most thoroughly vetted col

Oh i missed that , this is even better. Ofc not being a leftist should be a necessary element for getting access to the USA, as radical leftism is inimical to the core elements of the american constitution and completly unamerican.

Wow this is the best policy proposal by Trump to date.

Btw this vetting should occur BEFORE GIVING THEM THE VISA, not for the green card. Stay out of the west if you are not enamoured with the core values of the left, which are opposite to leftism

by Rococo P

Oh I agree. I don't recall ever asking friends who they were voting for.

we always talk politics among friends and relatives but maybe that's because in Italy it's normal and you can and do change preferred parties often (the choice is much wider)

by Didace P

What circumstances are you in where people discuss politics?

Would be pretty weird to be good friends with someone and no know high level what their political affiliation is. Like I know all my friend’s religious beliefs or lack there of…..and that comes up much less.

I have a good idea what people's leanings are from regular conversation. But, for example, one thing that is never said is, "How about that debate last night?"

Well there you go. If you have friends it’s pretty easy to know their politics without scheduling a meeting to go over their political positions one by one.

I was at a small gathering last week. The hosts are liberals. The guest of honor was our friend (unapologetic conservative) in town from S. Carolina. His family moved to SC due to Buffalo weather and politics. The female host said she'd consider moving south but would have to get over the politics. The SC guy said the real division in this country started with the president before Trump. I grabbed my popcorn. Unfortunately that was it.

No one said who they are going to vote for but it was kind of obvious. The male host did throw out the word "rapist."

I can guarantee none of them know who I'm gonna vote for though since I didn't chime in one political thought.

Not in italy lol, because most smart people have to vote the "lesser evil" every time and what the lesser evil is according to you at a specific moment in time isn't obvious.

I know without asking what my friends/relatives position on specific relevant topics is, not their vote

Ok, wasn't sure if it was a typo or one of your definitional shenanigans where "leftism" and "core values of the left" were anathema to one another.

Correct.

Also, if I am reading this thread correctly, some people discuss politics obsessively on 2+2, but never discuss politics face-to-face with anyone.

That explains a lot.

In any case, I don't want to leave the impression that my friends and I mostly talk about politics. That isn't remotely true. I would say such discussions are relatively infrequent. But it happens on occasion. For example, when Roe was overturned, a few non-lawyer friends asked me my opinion about the decision and what I expected the consequences would be because they knew I was a lawyer. That doesn't seem weird to me.

Dude, nobody is buying these "convenient" anecdotes, we all know you just like anonymously pretending to be a lawyer on the internet.

i was refereeing an adult(21+ only) recreational sports game in a drinking league last week and a drunk boomer parent of one of the players yelled "this game is rigged like the 2020 election"..

In vino veritas, according to polls 20-25% of adult americans believe that to some extent

LOL. That's pretty funny.

Now they'll say all these stories are terrible. Well, these stories have, you know, you heard my story in the boat with the shark, right? I got killed on that. They thought I was rambling. I'm not rambling. We can't get the boat to float. The battery is so heavy. So then I start talking about asking questions. You know, I have an, I had an uncle who was a great professor at MIT for many years, long, I think the longest tenure ever. Very smart, had three different degrees and you know, so I have an aptitude for things. You know, there is such a thing as an aptitude. I said, well, what would happen if this boat is so heavy and started to sink and you're on the top of the boat. Do you get electrocuted or not? In other words, the boat is going down and you're on the top, will the electric currents flow through the water and wipe you out? And let's say there's a shark about 10 yards over there. Would I have to immediately abandon or could I ride the electric down and he said, sir, nobody's ever asked us that question. But sir, I don't know. I said, well, I want to know because I guarantee you one thing, I don't care what happens. I'm staying with the electric, I'm not getting over with it. So I tell that story. And the fake news they go, he told this crazy story with electric. It's actually not crazy. It's sort of a smart story, right? Sort of like, you know, it's like the snake, it's a smart when you, you figure what you're leaving in, right? You're bringing it in the, you know, the snake, right? The snake and the snake. I tell that and they do the same thing

Perhaps lozen or BJ would be kind enough to translate that for us.

Reading that for the 10th time, it does kind of tell you something about Trump.

He'd rather cling to a sinking ship and face certain electrocution than roll the dice with the shark because the shark is big and scary and he saw Jaws, while electricity is far deadlier but invisible.

Basically he's willing to make hugely -ev decisions rather than stand up to his irrational fears.

People drive across the country to listen to that. And then brag about it.
