Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

There's nothing "sneaky" about it, I'm making it quite plain that your accounts of these kinds of things aren't reliable.

If it goes anything like the inquisitions into the places I've lived or am from, consider me whelmed.

Good weekend to you all, vacation starts now for me.

Looks like this suitcase trend is really taking off.

Samsonite should probably think about launching some sort of viral marketing campaign to highlight this novel use for their products.

It's a really weird category error to go from "some Jews were involved in Jesus' death" to "Jews, in general killed Jesus." And even then idk how that's supposed to imply any collective responsibility to Jews worldwide 2,000 year later. Certainly not a mainstream Christian view and not one I've heard my Christian friends tell me.

Pew (old but first to come up): a growing minority of Americans believe that Jews were responsible for Christ’s death. Roughly a quarter of the public (26%) now expresses that view.

Idk how many think this means some Jews were responsible vs the Jews were responsible. But only 8% say all Jews today are still responsible. However, that's the GP. Among hard core Christians it must be at least a quarter.

Christians often believe in collective guilt/punishment, as did the ancient Jews themselves.

We are all still paying for what Adam and Eve did. Childbirth is so difficult for humans because of Eve. Jericho and other cities wiped out. Hurricanes are sent to cities because politicians support gay marriage.

If I recall correctly, I gave a timeout to the person who did that, and PMs were also exchanged. It hasn’t happened again, has it?

30 day ban is ridic

Can he get like a week ban instead?

Free Mets

Its not a 30 day ban. Its a permanent ban with a 30 day minimum. And I have yet to hear from him or his representative. I can't really stress this enough: there is no circumventing this. He will need to do what was asked of him, which was a written demonstration that he understands what the rules are for this forum and that thread, and in which ways he is violating them before his return will even be considered, and it will need to be submitted to me directly. The longer he fights the inevitable, the longer the ban will remain in place. It would be quicker to just take accountability and promise to change his behavior.

Could we get another person to adjudicate this?

I will buy you a pot

Think of it more as he is eligible for parole after 30 days and he'll need to convince the parole board and have the officer who made the arrest sign off on it.

PW, I think what you're failing to understand is that this was collectively adjudicated after numerous mod communications about how to handle this situation over a variety of instances. I'm just the one who pulled the trigger, which, given mets' past behavior, was going to be an inevitability. The personal attacks need to stop. We are all hoping to have him back as soon as possible, but he needs to cooperate with that process.

Wait, I checked the user notes. NewTeaBag was Ron Fanelli apparently?

Alright, so yeah, the one we are apparently referencing is Ron, not Shane. Ron was the one who murdered someone during a ww game.

This article is linked in the user notes for NewTeaBag: https://www.billrini.com/2010/07/27/ron-...

ty for sharing

cn, surely there's a way to arrange parole for mets without making him do certain things some people could potentially consider acts of humiliation

i mean, at the end of the day we're a community of peers

Unfortunately, after multiple behind the scenes attempts to rehabilitate mets, there is not another way at this time.

Pretty sure having him grovel before her was the point.

Lol. He doesn't have to apologize or beg forgiveness.. He has to demonstrate that he can post within the guidelines of the forum/thread, which he has so far failed to do. Maybe he can have the AI help him.

I'm still his representative. Mets is taking time to reflect. He'd like everyone to know that he's ok and that he's living his best life. When the time is right he will release a statement.

I really hope his "statement" doesn't end up precluding his possible return. As his friend, I hope you review it.

I'm probably just going to write it myself but use ChatGPT to Metsify It.

Thats probably not something you want to admit to me if you want him to come back.

Just is minimizing

Own it

You got rid of Mets

You, the most biased mod wrt Mets, got rid of him

That’s not cool dude

I that some sort of really ****ed up attempt at a haiku?

No

What the **** was it then?

I've still not ever tried ChatGPT. Can you give it a sample of someone's writing and ask it to edit a different piece of writing conform to the same style? That's pretty cool if you can.

I would definitely be up for having a thread where we take, say, a newspaper article, and someone asks ChatGPT to re-write it in the style of different posters, then we have to guess which version is which poster.
