The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

And I'm sure you are super up in arms about the numbers of breast augmentations done on minors in the US each year that dwarves gender affirming surgeries, right?

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article...

I mean, these surgeries are unnecessary, dangerous, filled with complications, and have a much higher regret rate than gender affirming surgery, so you must really REALLY hate them, right?

Its funny, I've looked at your post histo

Aah the good old ''if you don't care about ALL problems in the world you're not allowed to care about THIS problem''.

He is actually right, that's a problem as well (if it exists as described), no reason to deny it

I mean kinda yeah.

Take the pitbull issue. They love to describe children getting mauled in that thread so you feel a strong emotional reaction to a pitbull killing a kid.

Bring up that there are 1000 things more dangerous for kids than pitbulls and they don't give a ****. Something like 1400 kids kill themselves with guns every year. Another 1600 kids get blown away by guns every year. If you want to eliminate pitbulls but are totally okay with guns then your brain is defective.

Can't profess to care about kids being mutilated in trans surgerys then pretend a bigger and more wide spread issue is a nothing burger or you are in fact a hypocrite.

Nobody denying anything. Just the standard nonsensical response your side also loves to throw around for the Palestine v Israel debate.

“Why do you care about Israel so much and not the war in Sudan”

It’s garbage.

They only care about a utilitarian calculus if it’s something they have a moral objection to. They have no moral objection to kids killing themselves with guns, they see it as a necessary evil for based gun ownership. Just like they have no problem with kids going hungry if it means not rewarding adults for being poor.

This seems like a valid and possibly pertinent question to be asking

Coordi is the breast augmentation issue socially influenced?

I mean kinda no. We’re in a trans thread. Should I now every time I mention kids being mutilated in trans surgery list the 100s of other problems kids may face in this world?

Find me someone who is against trans surgery for kids but for a 14 year old getting fake boobs and I’ll show you an insane person.

So no. But good try.

To you. Which unfortunately means nothing.

Aaah yes. I'm against child mutilation but I am for kids committing suicide and kids going hungry.

The insane mob strikes again.

I mean I don’t see you starting passionate threads about kids dying from gun violence or suicide, or kids going hungry. So yeah I absolutely believe that you would rather those two things happening than a 16 year old, their doctor, and their parents allowing the 16 year old to go through hormone therapy.

We are in a trans thread discussing trans issues. How do you not see the lack of logic in your comment?

Lets start a “all the issues kids may face” thread so I can voice my opinion on kids dying from gun violence or suicide or kids going hungry.

I’ll spare you the troubles. I don’t want any of that to happen to kids.

But as always. Good try, another fail.

If these teen girls were told that breast augmentation would resolve their suicidal ideation, we would all see that as bogus right?

What if we as a society were more affirming, accepting, and glorifying of teens with breast augmentation - would that resolve suicidal ideation?

by craig1120 P

Yes, but at least in principle it's fairly reversible, which an unnecessary radical double mastectomy very much isn't.

Why would someone anti-trans care about breast augmentation? I mean they already want to inspect the genitals of teenagers, it’s not surprising that they would want the females to have ample breasts as well

What if the APA has a sudden about face — not based on any breakthrough new discovery but rather based on a new consensus — would it no longer be bogus?

I am not anti trans. I am anti using taxpayers money (or mandates for private insurance, same thing) for frivolous things.

If it's not healthcare we shouldn't pay, directly or indirectly (we shouldn't even if it was healthcare but that's another debate)

Lol at considering 17y old 190cm tall 100lg of weight people kids, bad faith impersonated.

I don't think anyone who ever was in favour of lockdowns, or of parties that favoured them, can talk about young people suicide ideation ever, for the rest of their lives.

That's a game you lost for the rest of your lives

well then that’s just an epistemic question of whether it is a frivolous thing. also it’s sort of funny because the fact you don’t want to pay for healthcare kind of gives up the game, no? it’s not like you would support having to directly or indirectly pay for the cancer treatment of someone with stage 5 brain cancer or something, so of course you don’t want to pay for trans healthcare. it’s a tautology.

Not aure what you mean with "epistemic" but yes my main problem is with society having to pay for stuff which isn't healthcare.

Then there is the problem of minors being ruined.

Undeniably so

Well I guess the Republicans shouldn't talk about suicidal ideation either then OMEGALUL
