Trump doesn’t need to gain votes. He can lose votes from his 2020 total and still win. That was definitely not true last time.

All of this is fine, but Republicans dont read NYT and dont care if they are being hypocritical. We have an 8 year sample size of this, so I dont know why you think being hypocritical should matter to them now.
I am not sure most Republican voters really care who the VP is, as they are just about the Trump cult of personality. Picking Vance seems more about bringing in some elite human capital into the Republican fold (Thiel, Musk, etc.) and some independent votes along too.

And Trump obviously benefited from affirmative action even just to get into Penn and not having to compete to take over a family business. Not surprising that him and W Bush both did poorly as presidents.

Now that Biden is out of the way you can use this argument all of a sudden - not sure it will wash considering how long you had to remove him despite all the signs of cognitive decline he was showing before the debate.
