The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

he very specifically said he was doing that based on gansta's guidance

Obviously lying or bad communication between the two. When they left the snap deletes stopped happening. ganstaman is clearly more lenient (with me at least)

Khalif is a male with a DSD. He absolutely doesn't have Swyer syndrome as people with Swyer aren't virilized. He's clearly went through male puberty.

So we did warn you that continuing with hate speech was going to be a ban.

Let me show you how this thread will go without ganstaman’s patience and willingness to engage with your “alternative” points of view.

Phresh is banned for a week. This will give gangstaman time to recover from his cold and come back to deal with this bullshit.

I’ll ban more of you if you turn this into chaos. I have no patience for the bigotry in this thread.

Carry on but tread lightly.

Maybe I’m dumb, but how is pointing out that Imane is a biological male “hate speech?” Hate speech is defined as : abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice on the basis of ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or similar grounds.
He was merely stating a fact.

We’ve been over this.

i think it's wrong to claim he said anything hateful and request you consider a lesser length of ban, a week feels a bit extreme

meanwhile we have others here still actively insulting others who don't even get a warning (but you did get one of them so that's a start)

No. His behavior here has been unacceptable.

Report insults if you want them on my radar.

Given the state of things, if I’m the parent of a gender non conforming and / or autistic child, and I naturally don’t want my child to become a lifelong medical patient, I would be concerned knowing my child is at risk of identifying as transgender.

Not only do the many trans advocates not share my concern about my child becoming a lifelong medical patient, they would encourage and celebrate it. Moreover, if my child does begin to identify as trans, my relationship with them becomes at risk unless I am fully affirming. It’s a heartbreaking situation for these parents.

Bro, a mod will never admit to being wrong. You’re skating on thin ice man. I wish you well.

If i was a parent of a school age child in the USA i would move to a state where trans activists have lost politically, in their political fight to sterilkze and mutilate minors.

If I am not mistaken (things are changing quickly in this space) 28 states qualify (all the republican led ones , again of I am not mistaken).

States that banned puberty blockers, hormones and surgery for minors, and where schools are legally mandated to notify parents if the kid "self identifies" as trans.

Luckily I am in Italy where this non sense doesn't exist

Sounds like you’re in quite the pickle. Sounds like you have more questions than answers. My wife is an educator specializing in special Ed. Parents of children with learning disabilities have higher divorce rates, etc. I hope you do not fall into that and I hope you and your family find peace and equanimity.

We’ve been over this.

I don't think we have actually been over an individual who according to some sources has a XY DNA, never even tried to disprove that (didn't appeal in 2023, never produced a XX DNA test) and is considered legally a woman in a country where being a trans is a crime (Algeria).

Rick is respectful, cooperative, and reasonable to moderate, even when he is complaining (at least with me). So no, he’s not on thin ice.

You might want to ask him for some tips.

Ok. MrDavitWilliam, please take a timeout from this thread immediately.

You cannot just endlessly tell another poster to “**** off”

How many times can we tell a poster to **** off?

Asking for a friend who thinks his account could be in credit.

Right, cuz all I’m doing is trolling and calling people names and advocating violence. Oh, wait, all I’ve done really is ask honest questions.

by originalgangster P

Why? Is Crossnerd a woman?

Gonna need a chromosome test to find out, there's no other way.

There’s a Japanese proverb that says “The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.”

Don’t be the nail that sticks out. Stop drawing negative attention to yourself. That’s my suggestion to you.

You’re the only one being negative towards me. Others here have been supportive of me, which, as a new member, makes me feel good. Makes me feel welcomed. I’ve received lots of private messages in support as well. However, since you’re just itching to ban me, for whatever reason, I’m going to leave this thread to deny you that chance.

So back to actual news: both biological men boxers who were allowed to compete in the olympic games against women, won their gold medal.

Yes, but neither of the boxers concerned is 'trans' in the sense generally understood, so it's a slightly different issue. The IOC's declared decision to rely solely on the sex stated on the competitor's passport is, obviously, sub-optimal, and has not really done the two boxers any favours, since their gold medals are... not universally recognised as gained by fair means, if one can put it that way. (Weight for weight, a man, with much greater bone and muscle density, will punch at least 150% harder than a woman of similar talent and training, to the point that it is dangerous to put an XY and XX competitor in the same ring.) Both boxers under discussion had twice failed the IBA's DNA sex-test, which found the XY 'male karyotype'. The Algerian boxer's father produced a supposed birth certificate showing the sex as female, but, oddly enough, it was dated only a few years ago, around the time that the boxer started competing at a serious level. The IBA did not go into the question of DSDs (they now regret that), so we don't strictly know, but it is possible that these are cases similar to Caster Semenya -- mistakenly brought up as girls but known, since puberty, to be very strikingly 'different from other girls', due to the vast testosterone dose supplied by undescended testes, with this knowledge publicly withheld and denied in the interests of competition.

(If you look at Caster Semenya's wedding photos, Semenya is the one in the black tie and tux, the wife being the one in the white wedding dress, and Semenya has fathered two children since then. It is pretty clear which sex Semenya, a 'male karyotype' XY person, identifies with and self-admittedly belongs to -- except for the purposes of athletic competition, success, fame and earnings back in the day.)

Sporting bodies are going to have to deal with this kind of thing a bit better than they are presently doing.

Question for CN, GM, Uke, Coordi, etc.

If a parent is in this situation and pushes back against affirming the trans identity for their child because that parent doesn’t want their child to be a lifelong medical patient, is this parent a bigot? If so, can you explain why in detail?

You are a new poster on an alt calling for the recusal of one of our mods.

The negative attention you have garnered is due wholly to your own behavior and actions.

I just realized in the minds of the trans advocates who call people bigots, they would just assume that the reason of not wanting the child to be a lifelong medical patient - that reason is simply a rationalization to justify the parent’s bigotry. They start with the simplistic assumption that anyone who pushes back is a bigot and then any reason given is not sincere.

What behavior? What actions? Don’t speak in generalities. Provide examples. I’ve merely asked questions. That’s all. I have a healthy curiosity.

As I’ve already stated, I’m against the trans identity because I see it as harmful both to the individuals who identify with it, their loved ones, as well as society at large. I have reasons for my position, but do the reasons matter? Should they matter?

Or should I be labeled a bigot because of the visceral reaction felt by the trans advocate identifying me as a bigot? Should the trans advocate examine their visceral reaction or just accept it as the truth?

I agree it's different to some degree.

Bit both boxers fully identify as women, while being biological men

Semenya was disqualified but interestingly, iirc, the IOC gave her (him?) an escape route: she could have taken testosterone suppressing drugs and be allowed to compete after a while.

She refused (which I understand: if you are in a healthy for you equilibrium in your life don't take drugs, it is bad for your health).

But she didn't want to acknowledge her testosterone production, based on her being a biological man, gave her a too big advantage.

I truly don't know of in her case specifically, testosterone suppression would have been enough to level the playing field. Very curious about that scientifically and we don't have enough data.

Her refusal made it impossible for us to gather data on the topic, sad.

Btw I am using feminine pronouns for semenya because even if she is a biological man, she lived her whole life as a woman without flinching so for me she gained the pronoun privilege.

That's my subjective call about when to respect someone self identity and when not to.

I am not doing it because of forum rules.
