As a fellow brit, could you please explain in your own words, the meaning of the term "jobsworth"?

Oh, OK, I see, btm. A friend doesn't ask and a gentleman doesn't tell.

by jbouton P

I used it as in she's a lady 'by any normal conventional use of the word' and she's my friend by the same...

thus my lady friend.

I used the words like norm macdonald calls an axe a giant knife.

Its valid.

There is no authority, we can say 'conventionally we do this...' or socially its acceptable to do that etc. but there is no authority

just because there isn't an authority doesn't mean you get to be sloppy.

He'd be that lucky. Homelice is probably getting sloppy 15ths.

Button, why do you think there is a single person who gives a flying **** about your opinion?

Button is one of the more interesting people here. I still want to know about the neutral observer.

OK m, I take it back.

Button, why is there one person fewer who gives a **** about your opinion?

You have to be careful. continually calling me button is akin to continually misgendering. It was ok before but now that things have been well defined it will sticks out as unwanted harassment meant to make encourage others to take part in spreading the social narrative that I'm unworthy, unwanted, and unintelligent.

I'm not a Brit. It means the same thing in Mid-Atlantic.

Or we could just come up with a new pronoun - "xe" or something.

When I was in school, I was taught to use 'he' and that it was understood to be gender inclusive in that context.
Apparently that construction was unpopular with feminists so it became the awkward 'he or she' or the sometimes confusing 'they'.

A new ungendered personal pronoun would be useful, but I guess now we would need two more - one for someone of unknown gender and another for a known non-binary person.

I'd worry about fixing 2nd person plural first.

Bring back 'Ye'!

Who knew that being rude to transgender people would be the defining issue of modern conservatism in 2024?

And then after you graduated, universal suffrage became a thing.

As recently as 2013, you lost points on the SAT essay for using they in a singular context

I swear to god the use of "they" as a singular is not some new grammatical development.

I do definitely remember using "s/he" in writing but also am pretty sure that "someone left their wallet here let's go track them down" is also completely fine and not some new thing.

I mean, I might, or might not have been a tad inflexible on this issue. In any case, my suggestion to one touch clean and ban your account was only incidentally related.

But it looks like the use of "it" as a non-gendered singular (when referring to a person) is even older.

There are certain parts of kansas I avoid. But now I can go to those towns and say something like “ I am a perfectly healthy cisgender man and the woke mob tried to say i’m trans just because I like nail polish and am gay. But I saw through their lies! I’ll never be a woman. Now me and johnny are going to have some anti-woke cisgender not woke gay sex in the barn. Thanks for fighting femboy erasure my fellow kansans”

You always act like you're from Kansas like you grew up somewhere in the sticks with a bunch of hillbillies, but you're from Overland Park.

You suck a lot harder though Karl. I apologized to Bryce. You however can go **** yourself.

What I do know about Bryce is that his location has been Overland Park and that he always talks about how rough it is in Kansas.
