"The Pen:" Live NLHE Chat Thread

It's been about 9.5 years and 350K posts of epicness, but "It Lives, It Lives" can live no more. The OG LLSNL Chat Thread got too big for the servers to handle and had to be retired.

You can take that trip down memory lane here.

Now it is time for a new chat thread, and new epicness.

Hell no.

Work still to be done, indoors and out.

Site maximums for outdoor exposure is 12 minutes.
We’ve moved all work indoors until Wednesday and we reevaluate then.

So when safe max exposure is 12 minutes and they have to offload a tank you go out for 12 minutes work and then go warm up for 12 minutes?

Warm up periods can vary based on where we are on site and wind direction but yeah that’s the gist of it.

Even though we’re all outside with about 9 layers of clothing on and all look like the Michelin Man got gang banged by a bunch of yellow sharpies.

I’ve lived in the South my whole life, I can’t even comprehend that kind of cold

Same. Definitely can't imagine living in it. By choice.

It’s either mental illness or some kind of Stockholm Syndrome thing. Unfathomable

it's way worse to live where it's unbearably hot in the summer imo

when it's cold you can just add layers, when it's hot you can only shed so much and get drenched in sweat

yeah man…add a load of layers so it’s safe to be outside for 12 minnits at a time

sick life!

**** that. I'll take some 'oof it's a bit hot' days for the opportunity to wear shorts in mid Winter and swim in the ocean year round

sigh

you must feel just a little warmer and more tingly tonight after watching the Iggles debacle

feels, i literally sweat out in a heart shaped pattern on my chest and look like a care bear

i'm that guy who brings multiple hankerchiefs with him and is constantly dabbing sweat off his face

i've even looked into sweat gland removal surgery

Just stay indoors and blast AC?

I made the mistake of trying to hike in Nevada during the summer one time. About 2 hours and 6 bottles of water later I realized it was a bad idea.

Just deadlifted 565 lbs! Wooo!

I am a fat 227 pounds but it's working for me strength-wise.

Been two years since I passed 500 lbs but the road to 600 lbs has been slow and difficult.

people always say this, but if you're staying indoors in climate controlled environments then you can also avoid the cold the same way

It's a matter of severity. I don't like it when it's hot either but give me 105 over -40 any day.

It's easier to wear almost nothing rather than 5 layers. Plus below a certain temperature cars won't even start anymore.

Yeah, this.

The best thing about warm climates is that I can wear T-shirts year round, even if summers are too hot. The rest of the time when it's not too hot it's perfect.

Plus as a huge car guy all my cars run sticky summer tires all the time and they don't rust or corrode from road salt that cold climates have.

and i've been hitting the gym again, omg i'm so weak, i would not do well in any thread prop bets

was never ripped or anything and never strength trained, just wanted to fill out a dress shirt a little better (and i think i accomplished that back in the day)

but my god, i can't do even half the weight i did 2 years ago, and that's saying a lot because i never did big weights to begin with (would bench 35kgs on each side of the bar and squatted 55kg on each side of the bar) - i would often be one of if not the biggest guy in the gym but benching and squatting half the weight those guys did

like i went to do squats and because i did the bench the day before, i was too tight to really push my arms back and the bar was thus resting more on my neck that shoulder - i eventually loosened up and kind of figured it out but prettty much did minimal weight and just decided to treat it as a practice of form

maybe that's just me getting old though

still never do deadlifts, they feel so wrong like i'm going to break my spine and of the people i know who got injured in the gym, feel like 80% have all been hurting their back while deadlifting

With proper form they're no more dangerous than squats or anything else really.

For me, nothing feels more manly than picking up something heavy from the floor.

That’s no good.

Assume you’ve tried the two easy ways to stay cooler

- don’t wear socks
- shave your head

I’ve turned 360 in the past decade. I now am convinced that deadlifts are way safer than squats. Too many moving parts with a squat and the weight is on your body.

If you fail a heavy squat you can be in deep ****. If you can’t pick something heavy off the floor, it doesn’t move and you walk away

Interesting, never heard of either of these but they make sense

Nearly always barefoot/sandals/boat shoes with no socks in summer

Have not tried the shaved head one but shaved it a bunch as a kid and don’t recall any difference

I was once at a party and the host insisted if I just held ice cubes in my hands that’d help but pretty sure I was getting pranked

Always use safety bars with squats. Or know how to bail properly, but can't go wrong with having safety bars.

I find it easier to PR on deadlifts than squats because there's more of a fear factor with heavy weights on squats. You have to ignore your survival instincts and drop low enough before coming back up. Deadlifts are just one-way. If you fail it just doesn't come up.

Bingo. Year round shorts is great. Worrying about losing a body part to frostbite is not so great.

It was pretty soothing, although I've felt surprisingly little about the Cowboys debacle. Dead inside, I guess.

Says the guy who lives where Satan’s creatures roam the land and everyone there has fought a kangaroo at least once in their life. Pfffft.

Yeah, people up north used to hint at me moving back. No. No ****ing way. In addition to there being nothing there in terms of work for me (when that was still a concern), turns out I don't like living somewhere it's winter five months per year.

I should be punished for a mistake my ancestors made?

Living in the swamp, I have to say that the weather here sucks as well. Having grown up on the West Coast, I prefer a mild climate. I care for neither the hot, nor the cold.

We visited Minneapolis this weekend, and it was -6F. It did not do much for my wife's proposal that we could move there after I retire from the Air Force.

So we are indoors today.

The 12 minute restriction is a bit of overkill but they always err on the safer side at these temps.

I prefer -40 over 108. You can always add layers. But remove enough layers and you’ll be seeing blue and red lights soon enough.

Greta thing is that when it’s THIS cold, it can’t snow. So yeah as cold as it is, no shovelling is required.

And someone mentioned cars in -40. Block heaters are a thing in every vehicle sold on the prairies. 300 buck add on that if it saves your ass once, it’s paid for itself. Never had a vehicle not start in the cold once I’ve plugged it in.
