Politics and Society Moderation Discussion Only Fans Thread

Politics and Society Moderation Discussion Only Fans Thread

Hello everyone. I've closed the previous mod thread, and opened this to capture all issues related to moderation policies and actions going forward. I'll kick it off by reposting my intro post from the other thread. Again, I'm happy to be here and look forward to hearing from you.

Hello everyone.

I'm very pleased to have the opportunity to serve as a moderator in Politics and Society. I asked for this position because I believe we are experiencing a polarization in our politics and society unseen since the 1960s. We may well be at a juncture from which we will either make great progress or suffer great setbacks in regards to our democratic foundations and civil rights over the next few years. So I believe it is important to maintain a forum for discussing these important topics. When the other mods had to step back a bit due to their real life time obligations, I asked to join the mod team to help keep the forum going.

I have not followed this forum in the past, though I have been reading through threads the last few days and made a few posts. This has allowed me to get a sense of the initial impression the forum likely makes on new readers who are deciding if our forum is a place they would like to visit regularly and participate in. While I see some familiar names from the live poker forum, many of you I have not had any interaction with to date. I have no preconceived notions of anyone's posting behavior and will essentially start from a clean slate.

I will shortly post more about my modding approach and give my initial impressions of the forum based on my observations over the last several days. I will be soliciting your input on things you like about the forum that you want to remain, and things you don't like that you would like me to change. Your candid input and feedback is very important to me. Especially, please don't hesitate to let me know if you think a policy or a proposal is a bad idea. I'd rather hear it before it goes into effect than after.

My overall modding principle is simple: Be Nice. Disagreement need not be disrespectful, and everyone must be treated with respect. Calling a poster derogatory names or hurling snarky insults never usefully advances a discussion. It just bogs things down and turns off many would be participants. And it's not nice. Don't do it.

My goal is to have a forum where people with a wide variety of opinions along the political spectrum enjoy expressing and debating their views in a spirited manner, free from insults, bigotry and denigrating comments. If you enjoy discussing these important and often polarizing issues in a passionate, yet respectful manner, I look forward to getting to know you and working with you to create a forum people will enjoy visiting and contributing to. You can be as committed, determined and relentless as you like in advocating for your position. Be persuasive, thought provoking and challenging. But be nice.

I want to thank tame_deuces and King Spew for their support in bringing me onboard and for all the time and effort they have put into making the forum better. While I am taking over most of the day to day modding responsibilities, both are retaining their mod status and superpowers, and will be supporting the forum as their availability permits. And I personally welcome their continued advice and feedback.

Again, I am happy to be here and look forward to getting to know you.

I'm abit confused by this because P in it's heyday was heavily moderated. Personal attacks were against the rules. Then many set their own forum up - I only see some of the public stuff but it's been a moderation cluster****

If you just mean that browser doens't care about the forum then I dont think that's the case.

My comment didn't say anything about either browser or past moderators? But yes, drama about moderation has been a consistent theme on and off for that entire time period, heck that's half the fun😉

It's not your job to do it. You should clean up spam, and at most, steer conversation in a certain direction. You have ideas way, way, above your station. You seem to be trying to mold the forum into some vision you have, using "plata o pomo" rules.

You should stop trolling now.

For what it's worth, my age 15-age 25 politics forum which really was the most formative was run by a sort of centrist turned fervent bush era pro iraq war type who ran the forum on his own server. One day he was fed up with people posting off-topic **** in the iraq thread and started enforcing an on-topic only rule which just about zero people followed and so he unplugged the server, went for a week long camping trip in the desert, sold the domain, came back and said I'll email the vbb archive to whoever wants to take over on some other server/domain. Someone did for a while, but it was never quite the same.

I dunno, maybe there is some life lesson burried in there somewhere😃

You should prob also stop posting on this topic.

Nice storefront you have there, shame if something happened to it, right?

Worst you can do is issue me with a perma ban, and how on earth would ou justify that? I'm pretty good at tiptoeing to the line, when I want to.

The fact you are already making threats and looking for reasons to ban someone who is *gasp* ctiticising you should tell everyone what they need to know,.

Actually, browser, coming to think of it, can you actually link one post you have made on politics? Not a politics-related moderation issue, just, you know, the subject line of this forum. Politics. A single idea you've shared.

If not, what the **** makes you think you are qualified to moderate people who actually do?

Ok, I've missed the point then. The drama will continue whatever the mods do. As long as the forum remains there will be drama.

That's not what the word 'trolling' means. An inability to understand this basic concept is a rather severe drawback in an internet mod.

No one apart from mods really wants an all-serious politics forum when it contains people from the other side. Having to take those ****s seriously would be too much to bear.

He already banned Luckbox the other day for essentially talking back. In the last week, there has been Chillrob, Dunyain, Luckbox, and Trolly. So yeah...

I miss luckbox

Well maybe they should follow what seems to be simple rules? Its a week

Luckbox got the ax? Lol, found it:

Your list of topics, otoh, are not issues facing transgender people or cis people today. They are thinly veiled attempts to again question the validity of the existence of transgender people or delegitimize them.

Who gives a **** what Freud thought about transgenderism?

by Luckbox Inc P

Also, and I mean this with the upmost respect, but **** off with your "thinly veiled attempts to delegitimize trans people", as if I care about that or that that would be something that interests me.

This is a pretty bad misread of luckbox, there is nothing in his posting history to suggest luckbox is doing some thinly veiled attempted to delegitimize trans people. I'm not a fan of luckbox's "gender isn't real" type takes, but rightly or wrongly he isn't doing thinly veiled anything and does weirdly care about **** like what freud thought.

Sure, you two both should probably not have violated the spam filter though. Me three.

I have a question for most of the posters in this thread. If you go to a basketball game, do you mostly focus on the referees?

I have made political posts but I doubt you saw them since 88 of your last 100 posts have been in either the mod thread or the general discussion thread. 😉

This is very similar to football since var was introduced. It's nearly all about the refereeing

I would mostly focus on the hot dog and beer kiosk.

Clearly cause those are the most entertaining threads here. Is it even a contest???

Yelling at referees when they rule against your side is a time honoured tradition in basically every sport!

I visit this forum for the entertainment and post due to disagreements that I may have with others.

Forums that try to kick out people they don't like, usually under the pretense of pretending to be offended by their presence, has been done before and it ends up killing both of those reasons. If a certain poster is to be, and should be banned from posting here, it won't just be preferred by half or so of the regs but probably by almost everyone here.

This place seems perfectly fine to me.

Sorry Uke. You made it clear in your posts attacking me shortly after I stepped down due to my wife's serious illness that you only posted in the mod thread for fun to get a response from me. So if another mod wants to engage you, great. But I wont be responding to anything you post itt in the future.

Was he perma'd? He was certainly in the "entertainment" for me.

Trolly gone, too?

I swear I was only joking when I called you ninny muggins.

I note the links to your own views on politics conspicuous by their absence.

Depends on how bad they suck.
