The Box of Chocolates Thread (You never know what you're going to get!)

Welcome to the General Discussion thread. If you have a topic that doesn't warrant its own thread, post it here. Have a free form discussion going that no longer fits in the original thread? It may be moved here to give it a place to wander. Also, general chit chat is welcome!

You’d have to be able to discern when someone’s joking to be able to rate their humor. You’ve responded seriously to last several jokes, so… I’m worried for you.

Browser seems to recognize them though, maybe that’s why he’s a mod.

This hooliganism is running pretty rampant. What you need around here is a real mod, a guy who is isn't afraid to drop that hammer. A guy whose brow only sweats when he needs to wipe it, for performative reasons. You need that guy.

I've moved the discussion of dicks and assorted things to the general discussion thread. There didnt seem to be enough material to be covered for its own thread.

While you are at it, maybe you could assort the dicks? BJ claims that mine is smaller than Trump's, so if we both send you evidence, perhaps you could examine them, then put them in the correct order.

Historically, that has been one of a mod's many responsibilities. Duty calls, browser!

Did he claim you had a smaller dick, or that you are a smaller dick?

Also, I don't think assort means what you think it means. The dicks already are assorted. :p

looks like bobo is volunteering to judge

fun fact, 2p2 has had at least one literal dickzup4rollz contest in the past where 2 users (one was +rep lol and i forget the other) sent dicks to a panel of judges and they even did a thing to prove the dicks were their own like they were placed in a specific setting next to a piece of paper with some writing on it so you couldn't just a find a dick you liked on the internet

i don't recall who technically won because everyone agreed in the greater meta that there are no winners in dick measuring contests, only sad sad men

Sad old* men.

discussion of other members is not allowed itt.

A+

Took a second for the penny to drop, but yeah, that was good.

Also, pretty glad you deleted them. "Hence the reason" is such a barbarous contruct, I kinda hated myself for using it.

OK. I moved a couple more posts to the general thread. Puhleese respond to dick posts over there. My hand is getting really tired from all this movement so I don't think I can keep it up much longer.

Reminds me of the stories about Milton Berle. Apparently, he had a giant hog and would do measuring contests but pull out just enough to win so no one was quite sure exactly how big it was.

Or, turgidity. Not sure that's a real word actually, I just made it up.

As so often happens with words and inventions, somebody else made it up before you. It's established English usage and literally it means swollenness and figuratively it means boringness.

The Bentley racing team pursued a similar tactic at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the late 1920s. W.O. Bentley would only let the cars go fast enough to win, not enough to let the opposition know how fast they really were. (Or, at least, this is what was claimed, possibly as a mind game.)

Often candidates for congress or the presidency make a big point of saying "elect me because I'm not a politician". You often hear we need more businessmen and fewer politicians. The term politician definitely has a negative connotation

But our government is of course a political institution, not a business. What works in business generally won't work in government. Business executives or owners are used to getting their way, making decisions and expecting those to be carried out. Everyone under the owner or CEO is a subordinate that the boss doesn't negotiate with to set policy or take action.

So I wonder why the idea of sending "non-politicians" to represent you in a political institution where anything accomplished is done so by a political process is considered a good idea. Maybe we need candidates who say "I'm a great politician who can get things done" rather than saying "I'm no politician and will never compromise".

Yeah, I always wondered this as well. When Trump was running in 2016 and someone said to me "his appeal is that he is not a politician", I responded "I guess when you look for someone to represent you in court you look for someone who is not a lawyer, or when you need your taxes done you look for someone who is not an accountant, then?"

I can see the argument if someone was actually good businessman, not one who played one on TV and had several bankruptcies in real life.

I would say more of an unethical business person as I think someone that has gone bankrupt and than built it all back again as an accomplishment. Though let’s remember as well he did it with daddy’s cash .
I think Trump as the first example of a businessman as president is not a great sample size

He isn't a sample size of one. Hoover, Harding, Carter and GW Bush jr. were all considered businessmen. They weren't all complete rookies and inept at politics when they ran for president. Also, a CEO with a string board, unionized workforce, public ownership and a competitive product has a much more collaborative experience than a guy who runs a private vanity company started w borrowed money.

"The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable by-laws of business. The world is a business."

The median age of all US presidents when they first took office is 55. Yet the last two presidents elected were the oldest ever when elected. And it looks like we are headed for a rematch of the two oldest.

What happened to the younger generation of politicians that they can't seem capable of offering a viable alternative to these old guys?

Volcán de Fuego outside of Antigua, Guatemala. First active volcano I've ever gotten a chance to experience. Apparently it's been going off about every 15 minutes since 1999. Super difficult climb from around 8k feet to 12k feet where we camped but worth it.

That is really cool. Great pics!
