did you get to pee on lava?

That's awesome

The median age of all US presidents when they first took office is 55. Yet the last two presidents elected were the oldest ever when elected. And it looks like we are headed for a rematch of the two oldest.

What happened to the younger generation of politicians that they can't seem capable of offering a viable alternative to these old guys?

I've generally thought of these two as quite different stories that only by coincidence happen to both be so old at the same time. As in biden being elected represented a certain ossification within the democratic party that ends to promote high visibility establishment types in clinton then biden. That pattern isn't anywhere close to absolute (Obama, say) but there is a political pressure to do this and sometimes that pressure rises to the top amongst others. But Trump is just his own completely unique phenomenon and it is largely coincidental it happened to be the two old dudes both at the same time.

Looks like a great trip, luckbox.

True, but they both enable each other to some extent. If one of them were replaced by a younger candidate, age becomes a burden for the other one.

You can go closer. We were on the neighboring volcano called Acatenango which has been dormant for like 120 years but you can hike up along the ridge to the active one. But just getting up their was grueling enough that I was good where we were.

They just elected a new president who wants to crack down on corruption. Probably here for another 3 or so weeks then back to Colombia.

I would have never in a million years thought about doing this, but now I really want to walk on a volcano.

did you at least pee in the lake?

To be fair, you didn't want kids anyway.

I'll make a suggestion for future similar incidents, that I've used before. Quote the post, but rather than responding here and hitting Reply, cut-and-paste it into the appropriate thread's reply box and then respond there. Come back here and let them know you responded in the correct thread. Conversation continues, no danger of deletion, and it helps the moderators.

Are there people who didn't know how to do this? Never mind, I guess so.

You might want to rethink that after reading this story.

Very well played, sir.

The fact you read the New York Post is probably the least surprising thing I've learnt this decade.

Yeah, even having jumped out of a plane, and off a bridge with just a big elastic band saving me from a bad end, I think walking on an active volcano is a dumb idea.

Very well played, sir.

The whole problem would go away if you were notified when someone replied to or quoted your post, regardless of which thread the reply is in. You know, like in all the forum software written after 1776.

Maybe we could put some of our less productive regulars to good use and volunteer them to scour the threads and PM users whenever someone replies to their posts, with a link. ****, I'm probably top of the volunteer list.

I shall offer no defense of the pre-revolutionary war software in use here, for fear of being shot by a musket.

ah nice, so youre at "that" lake, lake atitlan. just wanted to give you a heads up. that is the hotspot now for americans. nobody knows what happened to that girl there, but its freaking a lot of people out. maybe they were all on drugs and then one of them killed her. one of her "group" came up with a story, like a month after they all hauled ass to the US, instead of coorporating with police) but lawyered up immediately, and nothing adds up. https://www.latinamericabackpacking.com/...

That reminds me. Ok, I'm 2nd on the volunteer list.

I'll read about it. It's interesting because yesterday in Antigua I asked a lady about which pueblos she recommended and she was like "I haven't been there in awhile but don't swim in the lake because there was an American lady who drowned recently"-- so I'm sure she was talking about this case.

yea she meant that, but that lady is misinformed. she didnt drown. boston university graduates dont drown that easy on a lake. add to that the fishy behaviour of her group. it was all bs. something else happened.
