The costs of trans visibility
Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....
For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and
. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her. What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.
We need to do better.

The problem with this discussion is that the parameters are set by the pro trans community.
You literally have to argue on their terms, accept their premises, or else you're a 'transphobe'.
Standard formula for basically all arguments that intersect with far-left wing politics.
"We are good, you are an evil bigot, we have a study that says we're right, ignore we're obviously a bunch of people who couldn't answer a randomly generated 8th grade math question, shut up racist, WE HAVE SCIENCE!".
Mod edit: do not say that transgender is mental illness.
you forgot that now you'll also be called a white supremacist as well and when asked to show your work it's not shown
how does that have ANYTHING to do with the lie (fake quote) rickroll attributed to me?
0.0% of people have said that about you another lie. please do not post in this thread again.
Is their any level of decency or basic humanity you two (luckbox and rickroll) are not willing to sink below in your pointless quest to troll the lgbtq community on 2p2?
bryce, you have a highly selective memory
you accused me of supporting white supremacy just yesterday in this very thread, i asked you for examples and you ghosted
i am earnest about meeting up in kc if you're interested, i genuinely like you and am happy whenever you pop up in the other chat threads because you always post interesting stuff from a unique perspective
i also think you'd see me as less of a villain if you could view a person behind the posts rather than the trope of the evil transphobe that you have in your mind
cite
to the point, you can be a nice and good person and genuinely care about the plight of trans people while also believing it's a mental health issue where we're incorrectly treating the symptoms rather than the disease
hence why i've repeatedly referenced the history with the lobotomy - another "treat the symptoms instead of the disease" period in our history that we look back upon in horror
are you going to cite your made up quote about me comparing lia thomas favorably to jackie robinson?
ok
like i said, you have a very selective memory of events, you literally posted this yesterday and I can't possibly understand how you could genuinely be confused by that because I immediately followed up on that and was ignored
that is an obvious and blatant transphobic argument that is too ridiculous for discussion.
Lobotomies were primarily used as a weapon against the lgbtq community and also are surgeries of the brain. Gender affirming surgeries predate lobotomies. A much more comparable surgery might be breast implants but breast implants and gynecological surgeries have a higher regret rate.
that is not calling you a white supremacist, that is calling meisner one but his own statements.
there you go again, someone has a different opinion and you spout off with the personal attacks of transphobic bigotry accusation instead of addressing the argument itself
sure buddy, you just slipped it in there randomly as a non sequitur as it had nothing to do with me, a typo, that's it
at least own it bryce, this is embarassing
No i’m addressing the lies in your posts(100’s) that you refuse to address. And I couldn’t imagine why, you don’t have any interest in understanding even the most basic lgbtq issues. What about your false quote in regards to jackie robinson?
what did i lie about?
if i lied, it'll be very easy to refute the lie with evidence
that would also be a good time to call me a liar not a transphobe
the fact that you’re willing to go to the depths of defending white supremacist trolls to further your incredibly uninformed arguments i think indicates how bad your posts are?
see, you're doing it again
i'm defending myself against your accusations of white supremacist ideology and you're doubling down with it now
I did. you can’t cite any sources for your juvenile lies and ridiculous smears of the trans community. You are. lying because your quotes didn’t actually happen. you are making stuff up repeatedly.
no you don’t have the right to make up accusations.
name some
what am i lying about
what am i smearing?
I will document it all.
Well we have a good case one poster made a personal insult and one said that trans folks are mentally ill Will see if they are both suspended or just the one with a good argument
fwiw i don't think i violated that rule by stating we should be treating the underlying issue rather than the symptoms - the "don't call it a mental disease" rule was more in the spirit of preventing people from just blanketly dismissing trans as crazies - i've talked about the lobotomy thing quite a bit already since the rule and not once have i been infracted or even warned via pm that was not kosher
it's also been personal insults in the plural 😀
I think most can see that a good majority of the trans community does have some form of mental issues. What’s wrong with pointing out what’s obvious? It’s ok to have this point of view.
