SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.

Sign up with /in below if you want to play.

In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).

2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.

The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).

We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"

Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.

The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.

Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.

Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words

We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)

I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

Does it have to do with i9? If in same domain I do, but i3 gets so many different paths to go on while i9 gets it narrowed down to just a very few

If the i9 is what I think it is, then no, it's completely different.

a10 opposite is good. a12 opposite *might* be better ?

Do yall know my p7?

not me

Only problem I have with this is if it misses, where do we go from there. At least if the ih card misses, we have p7 as backup.

Yes

My vote is i9 then you can do p7 if it fails

But maybe Zeus or bolt have ideas

I’ll keep pondering i3 also

My i3 is in the same realm as the p7.

I'm fine with the i9 tho. Some concern they won't know what that is, but I guess you can get there from the word without necessarily knowing it anyway.

Eh ive got a p8 that's really good

Going down the left track is right because theres a o3 thats locked

let's see if bolt has any ideas

otherwise, I'm down with my i9, d1 can do p7 and zeus has a backup o3 that's locked if we get that far

No new ideas here, but I have an opinion. A10 opposite is my favorite opener, but I'd rather go down the left track than the right track. So I'm slightly leaning I9

impedance

Sorry Erv, I don’t know what impedance is, but to impede is to keep one from doing something. I don’t know if that gets us very far.

I'd guess it's just the noun version of impeding.

Unless it's some kind of ritual weird dance including imps :p

So working off that, stop, hindrance, obstacle, challenge are the types of words that come to mind

D1iab wasn’t sure if we’d know the word, which makes me think it’s more technical/niche than just something like the noun form of impede, but I could be overthinking it.

Your synonyms are good. Also resist, fight, antagonize, block

And Nich said he liked I9 “as a different meaning for this”

Okay, so how do these fit:

A10 (opposite)
H9
P7
I3
A12 (opposite that might be better than A10)
P8
O3 (a lock)

A10 acceptance? Arrangement? Antagonize haha?

I can't think of anything for the i3 or o3 besides like...ion, oil and owl

Ice
Icy
Ivy
Ire
Irk
Ion
Imp
Ink
Ill

I was never great at scrabble.

by Nicholasp27 P

I really like i9 as a different meaning for this; I think it's most likely to get it in one shot

I keep coming back to this. If impedance means something that blocks/hinders/resists/halts progress, then seems like we’re looking for another word that also has this definition, but it’s not the most common usage of the word.

And O3 is a lock.

Oil
Oar
Own
Old
Ore
Oak
Off
Owl
Orb
Orc
Ode
Owe
Oat
Ohm
Oaf
One

I keep thinking back to some kind of legislation and blocking a bill or something like that.

All the O words I can think of is stuff like Opt, Oft, Off, Oat, Oar, Odd, Ode, Owe

Which I don't really see how they'd help or "lock it up" for us

Some stuff like ink + oil or ice + orb I could relate but no idea what that has to do w impedance

Impedance has me thinking about interference, like static or something. And the primary definition of static is probably something relating to electricity rather than interference.

And I3 could be ion and O3 could be Ohm, which both are related to electricity or charges.

So we wanna go something like electric circuit watt type thing maybe?

Could work if it's like a closed circuit of electricity or some power surge/strip that gets cut off somehow

I'm no expert here. My knowledge of electricity would certainly shock you

Yeah, I’m thinking something like static electricity or electric charge.

The only other word that I can force fit is “powered” for P7. Nfi on the opposites and other letters.
