US Immigration Crisis

US Immigration Crisis

I didn’t see an immigration thread so I figured I would add one. This problem seems to be worsening everyday of the current admin. Hopefully some of our new elected officials can help with this. Mr. Luttrell is a great start

But if you give merit based priority to people who cross illegally but have a skill why would any skilled person cross legally?

Asylum may be absurd to you but it's ac legal way to come here right

If they already crossed illegally that's about amnisty it's a different thing, I am talking people yet outside.

I am saying to make it very easy to cross legally for skilled people

Met a guy just now whose English is way too good for him to have not lived in the US so I asked him and said 23 years and back in Guatemala since 2011. I asked him why he decided to come back after 23 years and the answer was because in the US it's all just work and that life is better here.

Of course he's also working at a hostel in a small Pacific ocean beach town and I'm sure if he was in Guatemala City in some no go neighborhood he might

Got the true story here. He didn't decide to come back to the US-- he was deported after spending 14 years in federal prison. Was running drugs from LA to Chicago for years and the entire time his contact in Chicago was a US Marshall so eventually they decided to arrest him. All of the money he made drug running he shipped back to Guatemala which he used to start businesses here after he got back. Really interesting guy.

Senate Republicans block bipartisan border package.

Apparently Republicans need for election issue exceeds the need for any substantial improvement of our nation's, i.e. including Republicans' quandary of what should be done on our national borders? Respectfully, Supposn

“Senate Republicans block bipartisan border package, scuttling deal they had demanded from Democrats …by Stephen Groves and Mary Clare Jalonick, , [Associated Press writer Seung Min Kim contributed to this report] ... Updated 6:21 PM EST, February 7, 2024. Washington (AP) - Senate Republicans blocked a bipartisan border package Wednesday, scuttling months of negotiations with Democrats on legislation intended to cut back record numbers of illegal border crossings. …

… In a speech on the Senate floor just before the vote, Republican Sen. James Lankford of Oklahoma, who crafted the proposal, said that it was a chance for the Senate to decide “if we’re going to do nothing, or something.”
“It’s an issue that’s bedeviled, quite frankly, this body for decades,” Lankford said. “It’s been three decades since we’ve passed anything into law to be able to change border security.”
Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona blamed Republicans for not giving the bill a chance. “Finally, it seemed, we had the opportunity to solve the nightmare my state has lived for over 40 years,” she said, scolding Republicans for using the border for “campaign photo ops,” but rejecting the chance to enact law.
“Turns out they want all talk and no action,” she said. “It turns out border security is not a risk to our national security. It’s just a talking point for the election”. ...
… Four Republicans voted to move forward with the legislation and six Democrats voted against it, some of whom said the border compromise went too far”.

One of the points of the deal I thought was bad was all the Ukraine and Israel funding was not subject to any oversight . It banned any future oversight .

I still think the republicans should have taken it as they never get 60 votes for a tougher deal . I doubt it helps Biden either
As well the DHS has full control on deportation and yeah ok Mayorkis might not do much but if you win …….

Lozen, you have an autorotative and/or a credible link for this statement? I'm not challenging your truthfulness. I haven't yet read the bill and if I do, I could miss some points.
Respectfully, Supposn

Bernie "open borders is a Koch brothers program" is a hardline anti-illegal-immigration person.

"Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas' terrorism, but it does not have the right to go to war against the entire Palestinian people," said Sanders (I-Vt.). "Since this war began over 27,000 Palestinians have been killed and 67,000 wounded—two-thirds of whom are women and children."

"Over 1.7 million people have been driven from their homes and have no idea as to where they will be in the future," the senator continued. "Almost 70% of the housing units in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged. And today, hundreds of thousands of Palestinian children are literally starving to death because [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu's right-wing government is preventing desperately needed food and water from getting into Gaza."

and opposing $14B for military aid, does not mean hating Israel.

Of course it does

My favorite though this year about him wasn't even about Israel

He was on bill maher talking about equity and bill asked him the difference between equity and equality and he had no idea

****ing moronic fascists assaulting people in the street.

I do find it interesting of all the videos of people being assaulted in the streets of New York, this is the one which gets you (and Andrew Lawrence) riled up. I could show you 100 horrific assaults in the last year where a mentally ill person/career criminal seriously injured or killed a completely innocent person walking in the streets of NY, and there would be absolutely no response.

It is always interesting how someone's ideology affects their emotional response to an event, mostly detached from the severity of the event itself.

Red shirt fascist clowns attacking people on the streets of NY and you're just fascinated how anyone could care.

I am equally fascinated people are seriously assaulted, with very serious injuries, seemingly every day on the streets of NY and no one seems to care. For example, the below video would draw a collective yawn from 99.9% of the people outraged at the "fascist assault" you linked.

When a Republican stands up for our country, their party attacks them.

how the GOP tanked their own border bill to keep the toddler Trump happy

My dad had kidney failure and you're upset about street crime in NYC? Do you know how many people have diabetes?

I actually saved someone from being assaulted and mugged once (me and a friend, but it was 3 people doing the mugging). I probably care more than you.

Agreed. Legalize all street crimes until we eliminate diabetes from the face of the earth.

I'd make a joke about you thinking Red Shirt Trumpy fascist idiots are going to solve anything, but no joke, that's probably what you think.

The guy they beat up didn't commit any crimes.

I've known plenty of law abiding diabetics. Just because they use needles doesn't make them criminals and any suggestion otherwise is nuts.
