Gun control
I think that the Gun control thread got lost when the old politics thread got moved.
1 The rest of the world looks at the US policy with slack jawed astonishment.
2. “Guns don’t kill people , people do” is identical to “Nuclear weapons don’t kill people, people do”
3. Using the idea that carrying guns can prevent the government oppressing you seems to ignore the fact that the US government controls the most effective killing machine in history

A vast majority of guns used in violent crime are not obtained legally.
The same might not be true for deaths overall, because suicide is a stat, but it's definitely true for deaths or violent encounters with an unwilling participant. Criminals are not concerned with adhering to your gun laws. Those gun charges are also usually the first to get dropped in a plea deal with the prosecution, which isn't helping.
The PW algorithm is trying to make this a racial thing, but race doesn't matter. Lock every shade of violent criminal up and throw away the key. We'll either run out of space or run out of criminals. If we run out of space, start stacking them two to a bunk and may the best man not have to sleep on the floor. The hours of 10pm to 6am in prison operate like "The Purge" movie series.
I'll leave the concern for criminals and thieves up to Jesus himself. I can't be bothered any more. Clean the streets!
thats what a constitutional convention is, its the nation deciding that they need to change something independent of the judiciary and the legislature.
We dont have a country armed to the teeth; in many states there are still illegal gunlaws on the books.
until every american can fully exercise their right to bear arms without infringement, the nation will never be armed to the teeth.
Until everyone can concealed carry without a permit, and until background checks go away, we are operating illegally.
It's not possible without violating the 2a, the stock of weapons available in the nation is too big.
The U.S. already has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, higher than any country in Western Europe or South America, and trailing only El Salvador, Cuba, Rwanda, Turkmenistan, and American Samoa.
Actually to change the rules you should have to do what the rules say.
Not necessarily as a proportion of violent crimes committed though, at least when compared to europe.
That sort of misses the point.
Also, I'm pretty sure that prison sentences for violent crime tend to be longer in the U.S. than in Western Europe. Not sure about Eastern Europe.
Huge bullshit on this one. Well, if we don't even make an effort, or actually encourage more and more, then yeah.
I would argue that your interpretation of the rules aren't what the rules were intended to be. We could go round and round on this and I don't care to do that again and again.
The bottom line is a huge part of the nation idolizes this thing that has no purpose other than to kill or injure. No other use. It is sick and we pay the price every single day for this bizarre worship.
The people that want everyone to have a gun also have chosen one of the most despicable humans to be their leader. Not surprised.
guess it should be changed then so its very clear
People keep spewing these incarceration stats like it matters.
Given how difficult it is to get sentenced to actual prison time in the USA, the fact that we have the highest incarceration rate in the developed world just goes to show how bad Americans are at participating in polite society.
I don't care what other people do with their criminals. I want to be able to park my car outside without it getting broken into.
While I'm sure worldpopulationreview.com means well, it also spouts nonsense like this in your link:
and often jails people for small-scale offenses such as marijuana possession
There are a grant total of maybe 8 people in prison for simple weed possession and they probably got there because they called the judge a **** or something during their hearing.
I will personally donate my time to sitting on the review board that hears petitions for release from criminals who feel they are incarcerated unfairly. I make it my solemn vow that every single person who has a rap sheet consisting solely of "had weed in pocket" will get immediate release and an apology for wasting their time.
What now? Who told you this?
See: Pretty much every urban hellscape in America.
YOU get a signature bond, and YOU get a commuted sentence and YOU get probation for aggravated assault and grand larceny. Everyone back to the streets, and we'll see you next week!
YOU don't know anything about the criminal justice system in the United States, do YOU?
maybe for the whites
definitely for the white women
The effort would be unconstitutional.
If you have 10x the incarceration rate but 20x the crime you are not incarcerating enough, that's the point.
You have subdemographics in the USA which have no equal in any other civilized country, with regard to propensity to commit crimes.
Which is also why the USA afaik is the only first world country where immigrants commit fewer crimes proportionally than natives: everywhere else in the first world, immigrants commit many more crimes than natives.
Or maybe one of the reasons it was americans coming to save us from fascism and nazism, and not the opposite, is that they never gave up their guns. First thing nazis did when they occupied northern italy was taking guns from the population, those who kept them to hunt to feed their families were often sent to the camps (like it happened to the brother of my grandmother).
What's the proper price to pay in terms of higher lethality during peacetime, to reduce the risks of dictatorship? that's a question the population has to answer. But for now, your constitution contains the answer, it doesn't matter what the bad guys do with weapons, allowing the good guys to have theirs is more important.
You disagree with that answer, you find people who agree with you and change the constitution as it already happened more than 20 times for other topics.
What you call "poor" in the USA is welloff in 90%++ of other countries. Claiming having more money than a busdriver in Bulgaria (even accounting for the cost of living) is what causes people to commit crimes is absurd.
The idea that a Rambo-type character with a hand/shot gun is going to stop a government hell-bent on dictatorship unleashing the might of modern military grade weapons on its own populace seems to be a wet dream of ammosexuals the world over, but I think you'll agree that common sense dictates that it is just that.
bulgarian rent is like 5% of USA rent cmon now
also the rich decide what things are crimes or not
super easy way to reduce crime is get rid of stupid or racist laws that cause people to labeled as criminals
and until speeding is legal, the group of people that has the most cars and drives the most commits the most crimes
its almost never going to be immigrants
This is false unfortunately.
Trend is very good (far less incarcerations for simple marjuana possession), but
Not one, millions. And you don't stop the dictatorship which has already established itself in full, you stop attempts to establish it.
And yes if your claim is that the 2a would require civilians to be allowed to access ALL WEAPONS available to the militaries to always be at the same level, of course i agree.
For example the USA couldn't do a lockdown like Italy in any state because widespread possession of guns by basically potentially everyone made it impossible to enforce without almost certain risk of frequent bloodshed.
Speeding is not a crime unless it's something like 2x the speed limit. It's a civil infraction.
