In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

I have to disagree. Super annoying when someone uses their phone at 7 to buy a red bull or something and slows the whole line down. Doesn't the US now just have it where you tap your card or something so it's even quicker than cash? Guess we'll never have NFC with the phone. Probably not secure, who knows.

It may just be a jomtien thing but none of the 7/11s around where I live allow credit cards or the qr codes. So i use cash only there. I agree it would slow things down there. But mall stores and restaurants I love it.

Yeah, my neighborhood seven allows it. And while taking about 7, can we give those 7 workers some props. They do so many tasks from barista, baker, cooks and every other convenient store duty. Seriously don't know how CP gets minimum wage workers so motivated.

Contactless payment using NFC on a phone has been a fairly common thing for years. For some reason the US seems to lag about a decade behind when it comes to adopting new payment method technologies.

Yeah, I thought I saw it being used in Japan years ago and every phone has had for years and years now. Never understood why it wasn't adopted.
Is it pretty standard in Europe?

Quite a few people still prefer to use cards rather than their phone but it uses the same technology as the cards so anywhere that you can use contactless payment on a card (almost everywhere nowadays) will also accept contactless payment with a phone. Personally I'm not even sure when the last time I used my card for a regular in-person purchase was because I always use my phone (and often don't even take my wallet with me if I know I won't need it for ID or something). There is a limit of £100 for contactless payment here so anything costing more than that still does need the actual card.

Russia is not our enemy.

The MAGA movement has leaned into authoritarian rhetoric.

seems to be more support for Putin in the Republican Party than there is in Russia

These people have no idea of what the history of eastern Europe is like,
and if you were to try to explain any of it they would absolutely refuse to listen.
They get their information from Tucker Carlson.

Trump did say he likes the poorly educated. Exhibit A right here.

IMO it will lower demand because u would want to know how much u will pay and won’t take a chance unless u have to

I have never once worried about specific prices at a fast-food restaurant (or any restaurant for that matter). This does not mean I don't care how expensive a place is generally and make decisions based on that. But if I want to stop at a Wendy's for a Frosty, I'm not going to care what it costs before I walk in the door. Within reason of course. If one day it costs $100 I'm turning around and walking out.

WENDY’S UPDATE:

Earlier this month we issued our fourth quarter and full year 2023 earnings results and included an update on investments we are making in our digital business. One initiative is digital menuboards, which are being added to U.S. Company-operated restaurants. We said these menuboards would give us more flexibility to change the display of featured items. This was misconstrued in some media reports as an intent to raise prices when demand is highest at our restaurants. We have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most. Any features we may test in the future would be designed to benefit our customers and restaurant crew members. Digital menuboards could allow us to change the menu offerings at different times of day and offer discounts and value offers to our customers more easily, particularly in the slower times of day. Wendy’s has always been about providing high-quality food at a great value, and customers can continue to expect that from our brand.

To surge or not to surge…

Just think… a black market for Frosty’s! Or, just block the drive-thru until prices go down….

surge pricing when there is no scarcity in supply on something that is easily replaced with an alternative does not seem like a winner. but i'm no economist.

the idea that a wendy's burger is somehow analogous to an uber is a pretty far fetched idea.

I could maybe see it working in some cases like a downtown business district where customers had limited and time and options within walking distance.

But it would seriously piss off customers either way. No one wants to pay the highest price after waiting in the longest line.

Must be nice. Sure can't do that on a mod's pay.

It may piss off some customers but it is what is. Amazon already does this for online purchases, only because they were capable of doing so more effectively than walmart. I'm sure Wendy's and everyone else who started doing this will start out softly until it's a bit more accepted - like in other areas.

Fwiw we are talking 1 meal vs amazon goods /gaz or w.e that last longer
then 10-15m usable that u just get rid of it couple hours later in the $h!tter ….

Not sure it’s real comparable .
And yes good point by campfire , u wait 15m in line , it grows , when it’s your turn it got 30-40% more expensive ?
I would just walk out piss and never comeback at that place (not the brand) because I figure it will be just about local management decision what prices they fix ?

I would imagine that those dramatic changes wouldn't happen very often - at least not early on, id assume. If customers are getting noticeably irrated, then they're ****ing up with the pricing. I would guess that most changes would either go unnoticed by most or would be reasonably expected.

As of now, I believe it is only being contemplated for company owned stores.

Price changes during the day already happens, albeit to a lesser extent.

I’ve been to many restaurants that have a “lunch” menu and a “dinner” menu. Same item, two different prices.

Yes but u know in advance the time and price it is at least .
You know the exact expectation in advance .

Anyway like all market , it will decides if it’s good idea or not .

Ps: coffee drinker in the morning will get piss too 😀

About time ….mitch mcconnell stepping down next cycle .
I guess that second freeze event made someone realize something .

Jfc seem I was wrong lol.
Mitch McConnell only stepping down from senate leader position , seem still want to stay senator next cycle because of “strong sense of duty” lol from one of his spokesperson I think …

The guy will stand in the chamber not knowing when his mentally there or not .
What a great representative for the republicans people …
A stone cold unconsciousness rock !

I know people think capitalism is the worst thing to happen to human civilization, but the thought that this tech would be used to price-gouge hamburgers during the dinner rush just shows how far the brain-worm infection has progressed. Have none of you ever seen a video of someone throwing a temper tantrum at a drive-thru worker? Imagine that, but with 10,000% higher frequency. You already can't find anyone to work in a fast food restaurant; which would get so much worse by turning it into a bait-and-switch operation that'll just attract vitriol.

This is going to be used to remove the breakfast items when it's finished, plaster "CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE" over the frosty listing when the machine is broken to save the worker from having to explain it 1000 times that day, and maybe to reduce waste by offering discounts on certain items close to their destroy date, but more likely just make those items more prominent on the display. If you're running a deal, you can save a ton of money on vinyl window stickers and just slap it on the display instead.

If they wanted more money for hamburgers, they would just raise their prices right now.

You people are weird.

The last two times I ordered at McDonald's I was pretty shocked by the prices. It was like $6.97 for a bacon egg & cheese biscuit-- just the sandwich only not even the meal. Was in a fairly wealthy part of Phoenix but still, never again.

All the fast Food outlets are ridiculous . I used to get at our CDN institution Tim Horton's a med coffee , breakfast sandwich, hashbrown and two donuts for $7.00 two years ago. Its now almost $12.00.
Its bad enough we got to pay for a bag as well at some fast food outlets and no plastic straw

My BE&C was $2 this morning and also came from McDonald's. Seemed more than fair to me.

why would they develop/use AI for taping a sticker to the menu?
