In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.
I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.
Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.
People are developing and using AI for everything because it's all the rage at the moment. That doesn't mean most of it is good and/or useful.
Why would they intentionally alienate their customer base by making people sit in a drive-thru line for 15 minutes only to get up to the menu and be greeted with a burger that's wildly more expensive than expected?
I strongly suspect if price changes are going to be involved, this is going to end up like the movie theater pricing model, and not Uber. You get cheaper movie tickets at certain times of the day because the theater is trying to encourage more people to show up. The 2pm movie-goer is a different demographic than the one who goes at 7pm, so you aren't going to cannibalize your own sales by offering cheaper prices at off-peak times.

My wife is an OT. One of the companies uses AI to decide what OT is assigned to which patient. One of the things you don't want to do is schedule follow-up visits with a different OT than the one that first assessed the patient. This company's AI has somehow determined that one particular OT always gets assigned everyone. Every day a human has to go in and fix it.

but the heritage foundation is much more concerned with the hypothetical baby's skin color than they are about how many people are having. non white people are having better than replacement level amounts..
A contractor of mine has another client whose business is generating leads. They generate like 100 a day during business hours and each one has a fixed return and a pretty high success rate. The owner wanted to go 24/7 so he hired an AI firm to generate leads off hours. Off hours brings like 20 potential leads but they still need human vetting so the daytime people have to deal with what the AI brought in overnight. Turns out, AI sucks at generating leads and his daytime people have to waste time dealing with the overnight AI "leads" bringing down the daytime lead counts. He signed a year long contract with the AI company and pretty much has to abandon it.

That can also lead to a lot of good outcomes. For starters, AI could also create jobs and I don't see it causing a major wave of firings that send folks to the broke house. But I'm sure there will be cases of that. Im pretty confidemt in saying that these convos have been discussed by smarter people with more understanding than us on where this tech takes us - other than the low info, the robots are going to take over.

I mean, people are already getting teary eyed over their blockbuster being gone. Now you're going to have to deal with looking back at the memories when you could drive your own car or being able to have sex with a human.

I fly Spirit because I'm frugal. Especially to and from Las Vegas, the flights are crazy cheap. I hope this is one of the bankruptcies where they just get more time to pay their bills and don't go out of business.
