The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

It really has become that and you can not question anything even here two items can get you on a ban .

If you ask most women they do not want to change in a locker room beside Lia Thomas .
If you ask women that compete at a high level in sports they will in a majority say no way should I have to compete against a biological male
A majority of folks do not believe in gender affirming care that has permanent effects for children

Uke have you ev

i dont want to change in a locker room with anyone. why is everyone not banned from the locker rooms that i enter? oh wait because i'm in a public place..

These locker rooms are not public places, and you would not be allowed in them. No idea what point you think you're making here.

i'm making the point that it's a persons choice to go change in a locker room with other people. and most of this thread is full of bigots. that's the point.

if i dont want to change in a locker room with other people i simply don't have to and neither does anyone else.

now watch as this does not lead to any temp ban because of inconsistent rule enforcement

what would be inconsistent? is calling out bigotry and/or racism against the rules now?

Quite often, yes.

I believe the female swimmers do have to change in the locker room with other people, unless they want to lose their scholarships, and that's what was being discussed just before your post.

doesn't matter you're just a bigot remember?

You guys think it is bigotry to express the opinion that young women may not like having to get dressed before their athletic contest while someone walks around the room with their schlong hanging out?

Walk into a female locker room to change and watch what happens, public or not.

is changing in that specific locker room at that specific time with other people present written in the scholarships? i'd be amused to see that text in the contracts. i'm sure one of you can find it if it exists.

or is it just the believe that certain in groups peoples "right" to not be inconvenienced outweighs certain out groups rights to exist.

no the bigotry comes in when you are targeting a specific group. i said i also prefer not to see genitalia, what is my recourse against seeing it in the locker room that coincides with my gender identity? do i not have a recourse? why is the attack only directed at trans people and not unecessary nudity in locker rooms? why is there not a push for better cover in bathroom stall design, or designated individual changing rooms? i'm sure you can follow the dotted line..

The lengths people will go to argue their position.

slighted, i hope the mods continue being inconsistent and leave you around without the temp ban because i get immense entertainment from all the incoherent and ill thought out things you post that in your mind you believe to be mic drops

there's no inconsistency. lol. and feel free to post something you think was incoherent or ill thought out and i can walk you through it babysteps.

if you guys want to keep arguing the sports angle and unfair advantages or whatever, go ahead. but this bathroom thing is entirely created just to rile up the rubes that are filled with hate.

i play beach volleyball at a bar. people come straight from work and change in the bathroom. place has 1 large bathroom, with 6 full floor to ceiling doors on the stalls. not a single problem is had by anyone. what an easy solution to a completely made up problem.

Big news in the transgender community, AG of texas who is an extremist has attempted a long and complex process to blacklist trans people which has been blocked by the courts.

Totally ridiculous argument here. I believe they can't compete without using the changing rooms, even if it's not specifically mentioned in their scholarships.

I bet it also doesn't say in the scholarship documents that they're not allowed to stand there screaming profanities when the whistle blows, instead of jumping in the pool and swimming. But I'm pretty sure doing that would cost their scholarship, don't you?

I'm actually the only one in this forum who has said he thinks what you suggest here should be the standard. Unfortunately, it is not currently.

Obviously you know why people work a song changing in a women's sports locker room is a problem for more people than the standard female nudity.

I guess you also thought it was just fine when you heard that Donald Trump went through the dressing rooms at the Miss Teen USA contests?
I mean he didn't even have his schlong out. If those girls didn't want him looking at them, they didn't have to use those dressing rooms, right?

you honestly think if a swimmer changed somewhere other than the locker room they would lose their scholarship? like if i come to the pool wearing my swimsuit under my clothes from the hotel i'm off the team? lol. and you think i'm the one making a ridiculous argument?

is it creepy for someone to go into a locker room to leer at underage girls? yes.
is it creepy for someone that identifies as female to use a bathroom for normal functions? no

is it bigoted to try and equate those two things as if they are remotely similar? YES, it very much is.

I don't know, but I would assume they are expected to change with their teams. I know in the Olympics only certain suits are allowed, so they would need to be inspected before being worn by competitors. I don't know if that's the case for college swimming, but it seems very likely.

Maybe someone who actually knows can let us know. I think it's ridiculously presumptuous for you to assume the competitors can do whatever they want.

Is it normal for an 18yo girl to feel equally creeped out by the two situations? Or even moreso by the person with the schlong hanging out?

YES, and I'm 99% sure you would even agree.

if you are asking if i'd rather my sister/daughter whatever experience sharing the locker room with a trans person minding their own business doing normal dressing room activities, or i'd prefer them to share a dressing room while they are naked and a dirty perverted old guy like trump is ogling them and sexually harassing them, i'm choosing the first one every time and im 99% any non transphobe would even agree.

but AGAIN it's transphobic to even attempt to be comparing these things because they are not at all similar.
