SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

SIDES - Inaugural Game Thread

In this thread, we will play a new word game called Sides. It's somewhat similar to codenames, but cooperative and different.

Sign up with /in below if you want to play.

In this game, a target word will be randed as will a row of 7 cards that have letters on them (most 1 letter, some 2/3/4 letters).

2 people will be the guessers and everyone else will be able to give a clue.

The clue given must start with the letter on either the first or last card (the 'sides' of the row).

We discuss as a team who will give the clue with open discussion in the thread such as "I have a 7 letter word starting with a C"

Once there is some agreement on who gives the clue, that person will bold the clue they want to give in the thread.

The two guessers will then discuss in the thread and bold their guess. If it's correct, we move on to the next guessers and the next word. If wrong, then the clue givers post some info like "you are warm" or "you are about 30% there" etc to give directional info on how on track/off track their guess is.

Then they discuss and give another clue. But the person who bolded a clue cannot give another clue for the same word until everyone on the cluing side has clued a word (if we take that long to get the word), so one person can't hog the cluing.

Clues have to be one word, or an acronym, etc like in codenames; they can be hyphenated words

We can also give some info on how the clues relate to each other, or even say a clue is a 0 clue, so the opposite of what cluing for (e.g., clue 'colorful' as an opposite clue because the word is zebra)

I'll provide more details and examples in the thread in the morning, but this should be enough info for you to /in and join so we can play.

D1iab’s got something that could be promising

I don't know what the s9 is, but there's an o10 which probably works, or significantly narrows it down at least.

That S9 was not my S9 btw, but I don’t know if mine would’ve been any better

j6 could get them on the other domain

but if d1 likes his o10 to help out from here then m4 is another that def gets them the other domain if o10 doesn't

I have a bad o4 that gets them on track and slim percent gets it right

I would've lobbied pretty hard against going Shadowfax if I'd known that was the clue lol.

Well hopefully your o is better

I stand by my clue, even if turned out they don’t know what Shadowfax is

Am I doing the o10 or waiting for others to weigh in?

I think you can go

Everyone has weighed in

one-horned

I guess Shadowfax is the name of a fictional unicorn?

How would blue chip be 80% there? Like a unicorn seems to have nothing to do with that, a company makes sense to me

My first thought was a movie when I saw the clue

If you buy stock in a company and the price goes up a ton, that could be called a unicorn. Like buying Amazon 20 years ago.

One-horned just doesn't seem like a legal clue for unicorn tho?

Please elaborate.

One-horned is literally unicorn. Oh I guess it doesn't have the word horn in it, unicorn is corn heh. Yea seems like our guess

Here's my problem with unicorn. The original board was JOVW | B | DL | EF | M | JOVW | S

They could have said "one-horned" right off the bat if the answer was unicorn. But they went with the S9 first, which would be ridiculous if unicorn was the answer. So it probably means that they're trying to give "unicorn" as a clue except the letter "U" isn't available so they went with "one-horned" instead.

Maybe it has something to do with mythical creatures?

Yea hmmm

Could be something like magic/magical? I'm still not sure what blue chip would have to do with it tho, I can't imagine we need to snap off a company here

Bump

unicorn

Yeah that’s it

D1 undersold how amazing his clue was

Shadowfax is from LOTR; Gandalf’s horse, the lord of all horses

I thought one of y’all would recognize it but maybe most people haven’t seen lotr in decades so may be too esoteric

I did not know one-horned was even a thing

I did say it would probably get it, but I'm never really sure what is tmi in this game. Nobody was the least bit interested in it anyway.

And yeah, I think Shadowfax was too esoteric. From what I can tell, his name was mentioned once in a 10 hour trilogy from over 20 years ago. That's pretty much targeting only diehard fans.

I watched it again a few years ago, think we had that tower game here and insanity or someone answered 'aragorn son of arathorn' which cracked me up and inspired me to rewatch them all

But I woulda never ever gotten shadowfax. Doesnt even sound like a white horse, if you asked me to guess the name of the horse I woulda guessed Aurora or Thunderpearl or something like that

Great job bolt and d1 haha

Cor/corne = horn in French
Corno = horn in Italian

I had never thought about it before this clue, but this is all over orchestral scores.
