Russia tried to join NATO
Russia tried to join NATO so they could prevent NATO from intervening when they tried to invade a country. They tried this tactic again when they offered Ukraine their "ceasefire" ultimatum in 2022. NATO is a defensive alliance, it only threatens a country's ability to invade.
Trying to justify Russia's invasion of Ukraine by saying that other countries should have opened themselves up to the potential for an invasion by Russia is... wow.

It's kind of amazing that one woman, who isn't a historian, writes a mediocre book that gets picked up by a few outlets, and then suddenly this all happens. You guys can see why I'm so moon landing about it. It's pretty silly. We talk about bad sources, but Mukerjee (the journalist) was sort of the definition of a bad source on this thing. And historians have repeatedly destroyed her arguments. Even ones who don't particularly like WC.

Actually, RUSSIA should have just joined abandoned its culture of corruption and cronyism, joined the EU, and provided energy and high skilled workers; so the the EU could have been its own superpower. Not that long ago it wasn't obvious whether the EU or US would emerge as the stronger power of the 21st century, but decisions were made (most importantly the EU deciding to give up its own energy production) and the EU faded and the US surged.
I just hope that everybody realizes that Churchill was neither as irreplaceable or as essential as Alan Turing.

I don't think energy production is the reason why we don't have an European google, Microsoft, Nvidia and so on. And that's all that matters today to be number one.

Where do you account for all the positives of colonialism like you know, literacy, running water, electricity, enough calories to not starve, antibiotics and so on?
How many people would prefer to live as natives pre-western influence than in their current state?
Or is the model some utopian idea of "they could have got everything good the west has anyway without colonization", and if so why?
Because remember that almost anything that makes life worth living and not an utterly miserable horrendous experience of horror has been developed by the west.
Colonialism was based on supremacy and this supremacist mindset spawned hegemony, invasion, oppression, subjugation, the attempted eradication of culture, torture, the dismissal of suffering (due to the supremacist mindset that these weren't "real" people but primitive savages), mass murder and a laissez faire attitude to mass starvation via famine. It still has effects today via divided nations and the trauma of collective psyches. **** colonialism and your apologia for it.
