It never occurred to me to mention it since you earlier since you said you read the article and you knew everything in it already, which made it sound like you had some background knowledge of this, and pretty much anyone who does is aware of the Catholic church link since that was central to their existence and has had them in hot water for the last 20 years as you can see from the court case I linked. Public school is a term that means different things in different places, so I didn't focus on that.

Anyway, no offense was taken, I was just a little blown away at that time by your posts given what you had stated earlier, but we've cleared that up now. And yeah, I'd say your definition of colonialization is narrow these days; obviously if you take this mean nothing other than the literal founding of colonies in other countries, that's something that hasn't happened or really even been possible for many decades now.

I think our various misunderstandings may be sorted now. 😀

Again, I can't find that article, but the fact that the schools were run by the catholic church has not been mentioned any of the times I hear anyone mentioning the situation.

I find that particularly bizarre since I didn't think Canada had ever been even close to being considered a mostly catholic country.

Excuse me but the genocide of native Americans in what we currently call the USA is considered starting from before the USA was an actual country and even actions taken before the USA existed as a country, by populations that then ended up being called the USA, are counted as part of the USA sponsored genocide.

Whatever the East India company did to India that people consider wrong, is accounted as a British national fault even if technicall

I'm not claiming moral superiority, I was responding to a post and I accurately stated that Ireland never bothered anyone.

Did you think the French Canadian settlers were Protestant?

by d2_e4 P

That's not true. They do some solid cocaine trafficking. Two of their citizens have a 5 milly bounty on their heads from the feds.

by chezlaw P

They also scored first against england

You played great and denied us the grand slam.:(

Canada must be a muslim country then, right? The 100% catholic french never formed this country. Today they speak arabic mostly around Canada and arabic is the national language in the government. They are making oathes on the koran and praise allah... wtf?

Newsflash: In Quebec, where Your ruling class aristocrats are 53% catholic even to this day.

by rafiki P

No, the point was that the other two were also great. But you could make them out to be monsters.

Is that what you were doing when you were trying to debunk the monstrous things Churchill did? No matter how you try to slice this one, you very obviously favored Churchill over the other two

No, I thought those were a small minority of the population.

Wikipedia says 23% have French as first language. I would have guessed lower than that, but it's still a minority.

The first book is probably not appropriate for children in elementary school, but I don't think it would be a big deal for teenagers to be exposed to that, but wtf do I know.

With the discussion of what types of sexually related images should be allowed in books in schools, I naturally think back to the types of books available when I was in school. But without a doubt kids today, whether their parents like it or not, or chose to address certain subjects at home or not, are exposed to explicit sexual material of all kinds on the internet at much earlier ages than my peers were.

So it hardly seems to me that any teenager today would be shocked or somehow corrupted by seeing images like that in a book available in school.

Due to the modern Internet, kids today are going to be exposed to stuff that was not possible to be exposed to when I was a kid that did have access to the early Internet. That doesn't mean that parents cannot object to the exposure of sexually explicit material to their children. I don't agree with you that kids cannot be influenced by books such as the ones in the link, just because they happen to be bombarded with pornography on the Internet. Frankly, I seriously hope that the average eight year old is not routinely exposed to hardcore pornography.

It seems that a lot of the "culture war" that is going on here has to do with the homosexual content of the books. The right get disgusted that kids may be exposed to any gay content. The left seems to have this weird moment where they think that kids should be exposed to this stuff, whether it be a graphic depiction of gay fellatio or sexualized cross dressing. While I don't think that the book would have a much of an influence on an older teenager, it is a losing argument to call people that object to young children being exposed to such things as bigots. The effect of the left losing the culture war is felt deeply in my state of Florida, where the republicans keep winning elections on these issues. They win those elections because the there is a small contingent of extremists that push the insane notion that eight year olds need to be exposed to sexually explicit content or other bizarre positions that have been discussed on these forums.

My position is that graphic novel is obviously inappropriate for young children, it would be fine for a high school student, and it is iffy for middle school aged children. I am uncomfortable with the thought of disallowing children access to works of artistic merit because they are sexually explicit, but the same can be said for film. A Clockwork Orange is a great, even classic movie, but I don't think it should be shown to a 9 year old kid. I don't see what the difference would be between keeping a child from A Clockwork Orange and the graphic novel in question.

will those images and ideas make kids have those thoughts? I dunno. I never realized that was how some trans people thought. so now I have been educated.

The implicit part which we haven't yet discussed is that supposedly all content in the school library is potentially ,1) USABLE BY TEACHERS IN LESSONS and 2) sometimes students are supposed to pick up on their own and then discuss with teachers.

The fact that porn is easily available outside school doesn't in any way make it reasonable for teachers to discuss the details of blowing off strapons with 14y old.

I mean maybe for some of you that's a proper role for teachers; for me, I would call the police if a teacher has a detailed conversation of feeling while giving blowjobs and sexual tools with my 14y daughter.

Banning the book from school premises makes that interaction impossible

Some oddly specific imagery there.

Donnie`s gonna fix, right?

These books really have no right to be anywhere near schools-

These idiots have completely lost it.

It is the imagery of the banned book we are discussing

woke' children's books are dominating book shelves with titles like 'Antiracist Baby', 'Feminist Baby', 'Woke Baby', 'Teach Your Dragon About Diversity' and 'Daddy & Dada'

Strap ons are part of the curriculum for 14 year olds now? Damn, would have made my schooling more fun. Makes me want to go and finally get that GED.

Ah, it's good to see that washoe has a new topic to spend his evening Googling while learning almost nothing useful.
