Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

Only everyone who knows what race and racism mean.

Do you think American is a race? If so, I suppose you won't find it convincing, but on the bright side you must live in a USA with no racial conflict, as everyone is the same race.

I wasn't inviting you to debate this obviously ludicrous position, I was asking if you thought anyone actually buys it. Like, when browser tried it here a few weeks he got soundly laughed at.

Ok Microsoft is supposed to get back to me in 24 hours. I had to submit a bunch of stuff like where my account was created, previous passwords I've used, recent people I've emailed. So hopefully that works.**

Google doesn't seem to have any sort of option for this and their suggestion is to make a new account. The fact that my phone number is through google means I'll at least have the ability to speak to someone at Google Fi though.

**Nope nevermind, because I have 2FA set up they're just going to ignore that request, they said.

Way to go, Washoe. Don't you feel like you owe our good friend Luckbox an apology for this predicament you put him in?

Since I started using bitwarden qol has gone up. Will probably f me at some point though.
That wet phone should be able to be repaired though.

It wouldn't even be worth it to repair. Its a Nexus 5G from like 2016. My other broken phone is a Pixel 6 so also not really worth the cost of glass replacement. Plus I think it's now cooked too from humidity.

I'm chatting with microsoft support right now but he seems to have run out of options. How they can't just disable the 2FA I have no idea.

can you buy burner phone and send 2fa code to it?
I dont know if that is possible. 2FA is a pain in the ass.
You have to buy a new phone and transfer everything over from the old phone, or get old phone fixed.

by washoe P

- buy cheap phone have repair shop transfer everything over

-get phone fixed

- buy burner phone and sent 2fa code ?

The third option won't work because the 2FA codes are to my google voice number. I'm now on chat support with Google Fi but she's having to consult a specialist.

Microsoft support struck out but have one month of waiting my 2FA there will disappear.

The getting the phone fixed is definitely an interesting option but it's Colombia and old Nexus phones from 8 years ago could be a problem

*Case escalated to specialist team and they are supposed to get back to me via email...

I just had a 7 year old phone in a repair shop.

by washoe P

I had a similar issue with 2FA
If you fix the screen you have your old phone back?
Id do that I guess.

Or you could transfer all data to a new phone.

I'm definitely not going to pay the repair cost to fix my pixel. It would be about the same as a new phone and that phone had other issues-- I had to use the conductive charger to charge it because the charging port was screwed.

If I can get the Nexus working again then that would be cool but that phone is ancient.

If I wait 1 entire month then Microsoft will clear away the 2FA from my microsoft account and then I could get back in but since I have a "specialist team" from google now looking into it I assume they'll get me access back and I'll just buy a new shitty phone to get me through however much longer I'll be in Colombia.

hope you can get it to work soon.
sorry to hear.

Um, sure, anyone who knows what race means seems cool with it. I don't remember anyone laughing at browser about it, but he seems universally believed to be a good and well-meaning person around here, so it seems like I'm in good company.

How many people do you think "buy" your idea that "American" is a race?

by sublime P

what about one country, on the whole, being better at something than another country? can't this be a true statement without one being racist?

kenyans are better at long distance running than americans.
americans are better at swimming than kenyans.

are these racist statements? i wouldn't think so. so the question becomes when does the line get crossed?

is it when you bring in intelligence, or perception of? or is it just when one places a hig

These silly generalisations that don't mean much - there are probably millions of Kenyans who are bad at long distance running - illustrate well why Luciom's attempts to "objectively" compare people from different countries is a fool's errand.

by Luckbox Inc P

Well even the Kenyans who are good at running are just from one tribe. It isn't even all Kenyans, but the tribe that is good at running you probably could consider an actual race.

But herp derp I see some people with the same flag running well in long distance races, so without even being aware of what it's doing my inner racist mind extrapolates this to all their compatriots

There is a story about one of those guys-- I don't remember his name but we could find it-- who had like never ran a day in his life. He was in school and on the verge of losing his scholarship so he figured he should try running to get an athletic scholarship. He had to train at night because he was embarrassed about being so fat and out of shape. Eventually he became an NCAA champion.

Once again, no one really believes you're this obtuse, so what's the point of the act?

I definitely believe it. didnt at first, but I have never seen him break character.

Ye populations cannot be compared because there is intra-population variance, which is why you can't say oaks are taller than olive trees because many young oaks are smaller than some old olive trees.

Or you can't compare people with PhD in physics with farmers in any way, any attempt won't ever yield any information, groups of human beings are impossible to compare to any extent and for any purpose.

Remember the good old days when the best genetic pool for running was weedy white men from the UK.

Our two worst caricatures debating the validity of a third's is rich irony.

UK never won a gold medal in the marathon in the history of the modern Olympic games.

The winner in 1904 was of english origins yes.

Is the marathon the only running event?

by Rococo P

Is the marathon the only running event?

Given that we're discussing distance running, it is the premier distance event.

(but if you take a look at the 10,000 meters then east africans are dominating it as well)

How does one state that the 100m is always won by black people without running foul of the PC brigade?

That wasn't chez's point. He was making fun of the era when people seemed to think that Brits had some inherent proclivity for middle and long distance running.

They should have made the wife carrying race an olympic sport.
