2. Racist posts and other bigoted statements that target a particular group or individuals of such groups with derogatory comments are not allowed. This should not need further explanation.
3. Graphic Images need to be in spoilers with a trigger warning.
4. Wishing Harm on other posters will result in an immediate timeout.
5. Genocidal statements such as "Kill 'em all" etc, are no longer permissible in the thread.
If anyone has any questions about the above, please PM me. I don't want a discussion about the rules to derail the content of this thread. If anything needs clarifying, I will do that in this thread.

You are who you are, playing the moral appraisal game, mostly because of circumstance. But that duality is there when needed, for others to boringly judge, that other true self.
i agree that situating israel in the middle of the desert surrounded by hundreds of millions of people who consider it their number one godly duty to ensure that there are no jews in that desert was a bad idea
i have argued that scooping up every israeli citizen and moving the whole thing to the middle of montana tomorrow would be great for all parties
certain people get very pissy about this suggestion, and i understand why, but i do not think that the descendants of the israelis would want to go back. especially since that part of the world is going to be completely unlivable sooner or later (probably sooner) due to global warming
but, its not happening. so it is the duty of you and me and hamas to face reality and deal with it in a grown up fashion, and that includes not spending all your aid money on trying to kill jewish civilians

There is definitely right and wrong. If I have to choose between 21st century values and 7th century, I am going to choose the former. There are a lot of places where Islamists are running the show and they all suck, and I would choose Israel over any of them.
I would also choose Israel over totalitarian monstrosities like Russia and North Korea. It really isn't that hard for me to pick a middle of the road country that is far from perfect that is always being attacked by horrible neighbors, and still pick them over the absolute worst of the worst. But that is just me.
Whether there "should" be a state of Israel or not is kind of a moot point, as there is, and no one alive today was involved in making it a state; so I dont really see any utility in making that part of my moral calculus.
All the leftists here are so outraged over the MAGA cult in the US, and for good reason, it sucks. Nothing good comes from right wing theocratic populism. It sucks here. And it sucks in Israel. But at the same time leftists cant admit that in a place like Gaza that MAGA types would be liberals, and the majority of people much more theocratic and sucky. And supporting and enabling this suckiness (which is what we do with no string attached aid and moral support) will lead towards nothing good for anyone.

for citizens? not really even under whatever assumption you want to make on how they treat a specific group of non citizens.
Countries that legislated muslim morals in their laws (=islamist countries) treat women citizens like **** and you know that. That alone put each and every one of them OBECTIVELY (if you care about women rights) behind Israel, miles behind.
A country sole reason of existence is to further the well being of it's citizens. You judge a country success or lack thereof almost exclusively on how citizens are doing.
Every consideration about what they do to non citizens is a distant one infinitely less relevant than how citizens are doing.

You know why the Japanese aren't treated like nazis were right? because the japanize imperial fascists only committed atrocities (in large numbers) against foreigners.
What made nazism uniquely atrocious (and later some marxist regimes even worse than them) was the turning against your own citizens, because doing atrocities against foreigners was so common in history it almost didn't even register as problematic.
Which is why the USSR treatment of foreigners (including the holodomor) isn't put on equal to the holocaust even if it was very similar in terms of genocidal intent and scale of massacre.
