The Great OOTdoors

The Great OOTdoors

I've been meaning to start a thread like this for quite awhile now, and I figure since I've been cooped up in the house all week, now is as good a time as ever.

If you don't feel like firing up your own dedicated thread, then this is the place to post about your outdoor adventures. Whether you've been hiking, fishing, camping, climbing, walking, or just enjoying nature in general, you can discuss it here and share some pictures if you are so inclined.

I'll start off with just a few local hikes from the past couple months. Living in a city of 200K+ in one of the larger metro areas in USA#1, I feel pretty lucky to be able to drive just 10 minutes to get away from all the noise and congestion to explore our natural environment.
These first few places may not quite be the wilderness, but I enjoy being outside nonetheless.

Out along SF Bay in Coyote Hills:

feels like you can walk out to the middle of the bay on this levee

hiking up around Mission Peak, where urban sprawl meets mother nature:

the state flower

it blows my mind that this shell encrusted rock on the top of the hill was once at the bottom of an ocean.

long legs!

I think I've posted this one before, but who doesn't like a flock of big clumsy birds under a tree?

while on a hike in the Hayward hills we found this guy:

apparently something recently had kingsnake on the menu, judging by that big bite taken out of his side

bye kingsnake!

Yes. It's very green.

in all seriousness that looks pretty dope, very jealous

i've heard that floating lake isn't as impressive in person because you need to see it from a very specific angle in order to see it that way

any truth to that?

IMO, there is no angle where it actually appears to float. The spot where I took the picture is probably as close to making it appear that way as you can get.

The area that you hike around in order to get to that photo spot is spectacular, although not the most spectacular in the area.

Are you currently on the trip, or revisiting awesome photos?

If the former, continued safe travels and have fun!

This was a damn good guess

only because i've been to skye
they used to touch at one time, didn't they?

I don't know if they touched at one time in the distant past. The Faroe Islands are probably 400 miles north of the Isle of Skye now.

I ordered some new hiking boots... because the soles on my Merrells de-laminated mid hike a few weeks back. Thankfully the shoes were water proof so they had a hard bottom that I could hobble back to the car in otherwise I would have been screwed.

I got a pair of Naglev Boots... we'll see if they hold up.

They all do that now. It pisses me off. My last Merrells lasted 4 months. I complained to them and they said they don’t warranty that as it is expected and comes from lack of use.

Bitch, I get in 80-100 miles a month. Those shoes are not sitting in a closet.

I bought Lowa this time but they use the same gluing process. We’ll see.

bought a pair of lowa and wore while exploring six countries
been a bit but the benefit was apparent

also can't go wrong with a vasque sundowner
find a local cobbler who can replace a vibram sole and your golden

do you also complain to costco while replacing tires?

I damn well would if my tires failed after 4 months.

My Merrells failed on their first usage... and I normally wear Merrells all the time for normal street/casual usage.
Just never again for heavy off-road work. I also thought about vivabarefoot .

This makes me sad, my first pair of Merrell Moabs lasted a very long time. Second pair started to delaminate sooner than the first, but still lasted several years. Hate to think they just self-destruct now
