In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

A Texas County DA is trying to get Crystal Mason’s conviction reinstated.

Mason’s voter fraud conviction was overturned after an appeals court found
no evidence that she knew she was ineligible to vote when she cast her ballot.

Why Republicans think the National Guard is a solution to pro-Palestinian protests

Johnson painted the campus as a violent hellscape overrun by
“lawless agitators” who “attack our innocent Jewish students.”

Antonia Hylton: “Our team spent long hours reporting on and around
Columbia’s campus on Thursday & Friday. … I didn’t see a single instance
of violence or aggression on the lawn or at the student encampment.
The student-led protest was peaceful and often very quiet.”

I guess the injured police officers are faking it and Jewish students are lying about harassment .
Death to America chants are just made up .

Cancel culture and campus free speech was a super important issue until the second people started saying things on campus that the right wing felt like they could crack down on and exploit. Maybe the civil war wasn't about slavery and maybe black people are inferior to whites.... these are issues that need to be freely explored on campus without fear of punishment. But any student that joins in any hate filled antisemitic protest should be expelled.

There is free speech and occupying a campus and harassing other students or threatening them . I do agree some on the right have been total hypocrites like Ben Shapiro.
On some of these campuses professors have tweeted or posted hate speech going as far saying the Jewish massacre was OK they need to be fired.

I feel for these campus leaders that need to balance free speech and hate speech and protect the rights of other students

Shapiro is an irrelevant troll. A few years ago Greg Abbott signed some fake performative law that protects speech on campus. Now he's sending in state roopers to mass arrest people they can't even charge with any crime.

OK.... I'd rather leave these issues to people running universities. But Abbott, who I imagine would do as well as you in an undergrad class at UT Austin, inserted himself twice into a place where he didn't belong and frankly as a cultural conservative doesn't understand. he's doing. First he stated that public universities must allow the homicidal mania that you describe above. And now he's simply arresting people that have committed no crimes and have to be released with no charges because they joined a protest he didn't like.

Conservatism and conservative politicians are basically a hoax. The moral panic over campus free speech is just the latest example.

I disagree with Abbott as well and Campuses should be open to free speech

No I think Abbott would do better than me in an undergrad class . We both would strive to be as intelligent as someone like you

You might want to strive to Brian James first. Baby steps.

Thanks as for addressing the major points with the same level of coherency you always do. And I can't imagine you would.....I've never seen you strive to learn or better yourself at anything.

Great idea. Just hope they don't waste any taxpayer on anesthetic.

Did you read the details in the article? Never gonna happen with this guy.

But in a case where it does, I can only imagine the resulting lawsuits.

Louisiana's legislators probably need to take a look at what drives rapists before making themselves look like morons. The most succinct comment I ever heard in a discussion on this topic was "If you want to keep them from reoffending, you should cut off their arms instead of their balls."

Oh, I just saw that it won't happen until just before release (which is extremely unlikely, as you implied).

Cutting off their arms would be a good idea as well though.

Call me whatever but I'm coming down as against chopping bits of people off. Even when they're 'orrible

Need to try something new for deterrence. The threat of a few years' free room and board sure isn't doing much.

death penalty worked great tho !
why no it did not huh ?
yes im sure cutting a limb like the muslim cutting a hand when they steal worked great tho !
wait no again...
damn.

ah yes maybe the risk 0 is just a aim that never work because some people are just crazy enough to not care about anything...
sometimes there isnt any deterrence possible .

When were people in the US executed for rape? Not in my lifetime that I know of. And certainly never for one rape.

I bet the cutting a hand of for theft did deter a lot of people. But if not, it certainly made it harder to steal again.

I'm not for draconian punishments for theft though. Rape and murder are different. Try a harsher deterrent for rape. If that still doesn't work, lifetime in prison with no chance of parole after the first one will make society a hell of a lot safer.

I honestly have no idea why anyone would even want to try to rehabilitate a rapist. We have enough non-rapists to get along without them.

the point about death penalty was , even people knowing death penalty was a possibility, they still did it , regardless of what they did , rape or not.

obv i am for punishment for rape, but to think there is a deterrent to everything is dubious.
and when u go too far in deterrent, u risk awful punishment in regards to innocent that didnt commit the crime but still got convicted.
im pretty sure judicial mistake on rape did happen too....

btw yes there is danger in living, its called life .
the concept of going too far in punishment and laws that restrict liberty to a pulp trying to create a perfect no danger living standard is pretty much impossible.

Maybe no deterrent works for some people, but they shouldn't have the opportunity to do it more than once.

He's supposed to have billions what is his problem

Alina Habba is clueless & so is high school graduate Sean Hannity

Every time Ms. Habba opens her mouth I question which law school gave her a
law degree, and why hasn't this disgrace to the legal profession been disbarred?

I know a few states have tried decriminalizing illegal drugs for personal use as has the province of British Columbia in Canada but that ended recently as a total failure

I am not sure how this can even work if you do not also supply safe drugs

to the surprise of no one except economic ignoramus, increasing the supply of something more than demand is increasing, reduces prices
