Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

sorry to hear that roc

All:

I just informed Bobo and KS that I no longer want to moderate this forum. I told them that I will continue until a replacement is found or until they conclude that no replacement can be found. I don't know exactly what would happen in the latter scenario.

Rococo

Whoever we get will do a worse job than you so this is unfortunate. I think you found just the right line between doing nothing and doing just a little bit that will be hard to replicate.

Some check with ecriture to see if his offer is still on the table.

I said it before but I don't think moderation is necessary for a forum of this size, death threats, spam and donkey porn aside.

Some amount of tone policing is necessary as not everyone wants to play nice-- it just needs to be limited.

Why have exceptions for donkey porn or death threats?

I suspect that we are about to put your hypothesis to the test.

Good luck Rocco

No moderation will kill this. You'll end up with only **** posters because the non-**** ones will just leave.

This is his goal.

This is which person's goal?

This is his goal.

You're a notorious ban-luster but even you should admit that since browser fell on his keyboard there's been very little "trouble" here, and some was caused by moderation itself.

threads were fine

bowser starts becoming the niceness enforcer, it's generally applauded and very well received

bowser continues to keep enforcing, getting more and more draconian, laid out the code of bowser (which was always changing)

threads died down a little, a lot of people who only post here to insult others got a little bit cautious

people discovered the loopholes and arbitrary nature of what bowser considered above board or not and began exploiting those for full effect while trying to bait others into crossing the lines bowser drew in the sand

bowser retires, the game can't be played anymore, so people magically go back to good faithed posting again

amazing how civil the threads got once the incentive to try to bait people into bans went poof

I think Trolly imagines that there are people on this forum actively engaged in nefarious conspiracies to subvert its orderly operation. I would love to know what he imagines their motives to be.

lol Rococo says he is leaving and rick seizes the opportunity for yet another rant about browser

Well put.

They just want to smear dogshit on the walls, it's not what I would call a "nefarious conspiracy."

Rococo NOOOOO.

Somebody needs to find our lawyer friend, lock him in a room, and make him keep moderating, Jesse Pinkman style. It's for the greater good.

I would mod exactly like rococco. Well I proly woulda banned me and Mets and rafki for a few hours. We were out of control!

I'm still curious about the answer to this question.

Victor for mod! I figure within fifteen minutes of it happening, this place would look something like the Ravenholm level from Half Life 2, or maybe the movie ALIVE after the plane crash. Sure, it would be barren and horrifying, but don't you remember how exciting they were?

lol Rococo says he is leaving and rick seizes the opportunity for yet another rant about browser

it's crucial we don't repeat our old mistakes

bowser started out very popular but he refused to adjust and banned anyone giving feedback for a week

it's far better to get a mod who puts in zero work than one which spends the amount of time he did in order to fix problems that didn't exist (how many hundreds of posts did he move each week so things would be in the appropriate thread? do you not recall his constant complaining of people chatting - yelling at people for "intervening in private conversations" - yes, that's 100% correct, if two posters were having a back and forth he'd delete the posts of others who chimed in to maintain it as "a private conversation as intended")

no mod is better than an ideological one who has a firm stance of how the "forum should be" rather than accepting it for what it is - nobody is here for someone else's vision, they are here for what it is currently and it's important that muture moderators understand this

i like the guy a lot personally, but we can't ever repeat that again

Throw your hat into the ring bro. I'd vote Donk.

uke, i know with your world view where everything is either good or evil this is hard to jive with, but that wasn't intended at all as an attack on bowser, it's out of concern of letting it happen again and we should take precautions against that

the place has been 100% better in the wild wild west era since he stepped down, perhaps it needs a mod long term, perhaps rococo did tons of stuff behind the scenes i never witnessed, but we're 100% better off with no mod than with an overreaching and subjective one
