Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

Every song is exposition, yet they all leave me more confused about the story than when I started.

A few? We've had four bans from that thread alone in a matter of days, an absurd amount of timeouts, an absolute onslaught of PMs, and the post reports, and one poster going on a ridiculous personal rant against me for moderating the thread. The thread is only open now at all because I agreed to moderate it, and I've been as nice as I can be and put as much effort into it as I'm willing to. So the thread is locked for now until some of you

I want you to permaban people partially because it would mean a lot less work for moderators.

I could clean it up easily in an hour per week, tops.

Permaban Victor and just straight up erase his posts, all of them, including the posts that quote him.

The only way he engages with people he disagrees with is to enrage them and to prove himself right that those he oppose are angry... by making them angry. And he disagrees with everyone. His presence makes it impossible to keep the conversation in the thread civil.

Cloaking his language in sympathy for the Palestinian children and women doesn't remotely excuse the abominable nature of his disregard for Israelis or shield him from censure and, at this point, a permaban.

The thread deserves to live because the issue is too important to not have open dialogue. But Victor does not deserve a place in the thread because he makes open dialogue impossible. He's probably not the only one that needs to be removed but he's definitely the first.

So he disagrees with everyone but hasn’t enraged quite a few posters so you’re not making any sense.

I already linked you to an alternative forum that offers the sort of intense moderation experience (lol) you want.

I usually don't read posts that start with XXX should be banned.

but I agree. Victor has jumped the shark.... and a ban is warranted.

Warning to the rest of you. Tone it down. The I/P thread is headed for the junk pile.

I blame Twitter, it rewards people for posting maximum ragebait and hyperbole. Totally wrecks some people's headspaces, probably social media should be prohibited for people under 16.

Wtf. Are you sure you shouldn't resign as a mod?

Crossnerd is handling the Israel thread.

And she was doing just fine.

What are the posts that Victor has made that warrant a month long ban?

Victor was an awful poster who made every thread worse. I was waiting for one bad enough post to just ban him, but I never felt any one was over the line enough. In totality, though, he definitely hindered real discussion.

I get the feeling being described but if there isn't a break of rules, he should have received an official warning like "you aren't breaking any rule in any single post but you are ruining the experience for enough people, please restrain doing x y z or we will actually ban you for a long time". No idea if he was warned and disregarded that though.

It's completely capricious. The Israel thread gets locked because Mets has a meltdown, people come here to complain about it and Victor and all of a sudden Victor is banned for a month without even posting, when prior to that people were just being exiled from the thread for some period of time.

King Spew,

What is Victor actually being banned for? Is it anti-semitism? If it's not that then what is it?

mets requested yesterday afternoon and was granted a 7 day time out.

Victor was in the Ukraine thread last night for hours after the I/P thread was closed arguing with BlueGrassPlayer. I don’t know how to get it to stop, and I’m new here and don’t feel comfortable making large decisions yet. I appreciate and defer to King Spew and gangstaman.

Victor has had probably more feedback on his posting from almost everyone here, including mods, than anyone else on the forum. Instead of stepping back, listening to that feedback, and trying to post better, he doubles and triples down. The more input he gets from people, the worse he gets.

I'm not sure how that should have any bearing on this. Threads are made to be posted in

Ok what were his recent posts that were so bad?

OMG he went into another thread and disagreed with someone there BAN HIM.

And this whole 'thin green line' thing doesn't suite you.

So Mets whined enough about Vic and offered to self-ban for a week if you banned Vic for longer. Excellent!

Some posters enjoy reading Vic's posts. This is just the opinion of you and a few others who probably share your world view. Those that don't share it should be allowed to chat with Vic about I/P in the thread.

No clue, I generally don't participate in the threads he's most active in, but I've seen his overall work.

Looks kinda weird for me to defend him but when he was told to stop posting dead babies photos/videos he did.

When he got told to avoid personal attacks/definitions of character of other posters, he did that a lot less.

It's clear though that he moved to try everything which wasn't explicitly forbidden, to vent his hatred of the west and so on as much as possible, but as an Italian I can't criticize trying to bend the law in your favour as much as possible, that's our cultural DNA

Nobody wants to read hundreds of posts in a row bickering back and forth whether each other are "lying". Mets and Victor both suffer from the same issue- they don't know when to stop.

My understanding is that Victor's timeout here is not just based on the I/P thread but his body of work as a whole in P&S. I personally have no bad feelings toward anyone here, and sincerely hope he'll be back in a better form when he returns. Victor has been cooperative and responsive with me and my moderation in the I/P thread recently, so I am optimistic that this will be a one off.

As far as Mets goes, he probably should have been temped after his meltdown yesterday, but he offered to take a 7 day vacation, and that offer was accepted.

To put things in perspective though, Met has family in Israel iirc, Vic doesn't have family in Palestine, I think if that's confirmed it would be really normal to give Met a ton more latitude on that specific topic.
