Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

So Mets whined enough about Vic and offered to self-ban for a week if you banned Vic for longer. Excellent!

And I wish you wouldn't suggest things like this... Fairness and justice are part of my core beliefs, and I hope my behavior and actions as a moderator have demonstrated that. I would never do something like the above, and its hurtful that you'd say it. :(

He said it to King Spew.

Moderator is a thankless job. No matter what you do, someone will think it is unfair.

It's thankless, except for the parade of thanks that moderators constantly get. Yes, you're guaranteed to have some people mad at you (whether it's for too much or too little moderating), but it's hardly thankless.

Treating people fairly and not making bullshit month long "body of work" bans that can't be defended would probably help there.

Victor was in the Ukraine thread last night for hours after the I/P thread was closed arguing with BlueGrassPlayer. I don’t know how to get it to stop, and I’m new here and don’t feel comfortable making large decisions yet. I appreciate and defer to King Spew and gangstaman.

I mean KS did what he did and we have no clue if he has even been reading the IP thread since you took it over, and Gangsta has admitted that he has been looking for any excuse to ban Victor. Those aren't the sort of mods that you should be thankful for and deferring to.

Isn't this the part where you usually do your performative little "ban me next" routine?

I thought instead I'd just ask nicely for you to get a body of work ban since that seems to work here.

LB, please... this just isn't helpful, friend

Ok. What would be helpful though is if some moderator-- preferably king spew-- were to at least quote some posts or say what it is that Victor is getting banned for a month for.

Not addressed to you cn. You're in a difficult spot with overarching mods making bad decisions based on prejudice.

LB, Maybe you should take that to PMs with him if its important to you. Here isn't the best place imho... Please.

Anyway, I've reopened the Israel/Palestine thread. I've been told the discourse would drastically improve should certain people no longer be permitted to post in it, so lets see it, friends.

Talking of "body of work" where's our old friend d2 hiding out these days? :p

Tens of thousands killed unnecessarily but we really must be polite with each other when discussing it on an obscure internet forum with about 20 active posters.

It really isn't about politeness, its about efficacy. Who exactly is edified by a thread full of people calling each other baby murderers and jew haters? I've said it before in that thread that you don't have to be civil. But your content must outweigh your noise.

If someone is annoying to you but not breaking any rules, that's what the ignore list is for.

You can access it via your profile.

Banning people who say things you personally don't like is how you end up with the situation that resulted in the mass exodus we had however many years ago. Creating echo chambers is boring. 2p2 politics is a shell of its former self. Don't get me wrong; I'm glad a select number of those self-righteous douchenozzles are gone, but it's undeniable that the place is less lively.

To put things in perspective though, Met has family in Israel iirc, Vic doesn't have family in Palestine, I think if that's confirmed it would be really normal to give Met a ton more latitude on that specific topic.

No. I would have thought you were against affirmative action.

Lurking for a bit, got IRL stuff going on at the mo. Still around.

Don't you think Vic posts an absolute ton of content in the I/P thread? I don't know what he posted in the Ukraine thread but it would have to have been voluminous filth to be four times worse than mets ban worthy posts.

Reeks of mod bias (not you).

OK, glad you're still alive and well.

This is the moderation discussion thread. And I know that you know that what has taken place is horseshit and that you want to circle the mod wagons, but when you have people like Luciom and Inso defending someone like Victor then really something has gone wrong.

Body of Work is all that is needed as an "excuse" to give time outs. But that is not Vic's problem. Constantly using baby killers and genocide lovers (examples) is beyond ANY line in the sand. Pictures of dead babies,,,, cmon. Just a terrible poster. Enough IS enough.

As a reference, I have a bias against Brian James posts.... yet he seems to have avoided being a terrible poster. I understand his posts just fine without him resorting to shock value rhetoric and images.

I am sorry that some of you have a problem with my decision. But the owners have no interest in this place being a free-for-all forum. If you constantly want dead baby picture type posts, please go somewhere else.

Have you really been reading the thread, ever? I've lost count of the number of times I and others have been called anti-semites and Jew haters (despite advocating for a safe place for Jewish people).

I don't want those posters banned, but a level playing field.

The new owners wanted all perma-banned people unbanned, iirc.

Given that microbet is back here, I'd wager modding that forum with all the leftwing nuts he thought he agreed with turned out to be far more challenging than he expected.
