Omaha rollercoaster

Hey guys, I decided I'm going to start a new blog.

I'm 34 years old, from Belgium but have been living in Budapest, Hungary for the past 6 years. I used to play highstakes spins but have been playing PLO since 2022.

I've been playing poker professionally since 2016, so it's my 9th year being a pro now. As expected in this profession, I've had to go through several hurdles and swings. And tbh basically every year since I've started I've took at least 3 months off the year from poker. My longest break was actually in 2021, where I took a full year off from grinding. Poker has been a rollercoaster, and taught me a lot of life lessons. And I wish to share all this with you.

The exception to this pattern of taking long breaks from poker has been these past 12 months. I'm happy to say that in the past 12 months I haven't took any long (over a couple weeks long) breaks from poker. I attribute one of the biggest reasons for this to my current girlfriend, who brings me a lot of balance in life, love and support.

Goals, logistics and the future:

This year's poker goals:
- I want to perfect 12-tabling and possibly 15 table: Adding more tables is a skill and one that anyone can work on. At 12 tables I find a slight lack of performance and it gets hard to keep up with the action but if I keep practicing I'm sure it will get better. Perhaps I could move up to 15 tables. Although perhaps if I move up higher there won't be enough tables running and there wouldn't be much point in playing more tables.
- I want to move up to PLO1k: By the end of this year I'd like to at least take a shot PLO1k. TBH according to some bankroll calculators using the Kelly criterion I may already have the required roll. However as a human I'd like to be a bit less risky, I'm not really in any rush.

Long-term poker goals:
- I want to be a regular in PLO2k+ games: Quite a vague goal, and how I want to move is quite questionable for now. Currently I'd be more than happy if I could play 10/20 as my main stake, but perhaps in the future that would change. Honestly I'm quite focused on reaching PLO2k and then after that it's kind of see where things take us. Perhaps I'd want to keep moving higher, perhaps I'd want to learn a new game such as 5-card or heads up, perhaps I'd want to start coaching again, perhaps I'd want to play live, perhaps I'd want to play on multiple sites rather than only GG. All I know is until I'm playing 10/20+ all of these are kind of just vague ideas of future possibilities.

Tbh poker wise there aren't so many other goals. I have a lot of systems in place to reach these goals, and I guess later in the blog I could explain some of these systems. But my actual goals are not too defined and as the journey continues, some of them are prone to change.

Why I started this blog:
Firstly I enjoy writing. Writing is a form of self-expression and as an introvert I find writing to be one of best forms of it. I'd like to share my poker journey.

It's also about my motivation for poker. If you read my blog, you'll notice that I'm not motivated much by money unless it's simply to get out of a hole. I've done some soul-searching and looked for what truly motivates me. And I've found that my biggest motivation is actually social in addition to the learning aspect.

I love to grow and learn. And this is one of the reasons I chose PLO as my main game. It's such a complex game where I feel I could study it for a lifetime and still find new things in the game.

But loving to learn is not enough. I'm a human with social needs. I got some social outlets. I got my lovely significant other, I got a dog, I got a few good friends I communicate with regularly. But it could be more. This is one of the reasons I started my study group actually. Not only to study poker, but to make studying more fun with others, to learn together with others and share our combined knowledge, combining 2 of my biggest motivations. But I still see there could be more. This is one of my reasons to start this blog now, to share the journey.

In addition it is to set myself up for better opportunities in the future. If i want to play live poker more, perhaps putting my name out there could get me some invites, or perhaps to some apps (I am NOT interested in playing on apps currently). Perhaps I want to start coaching in the future and having a blog could help get some recognition. Regardless, I'm sure until I'm playing PLO2k+ I wouldn't want to do any coaching. If I wanted to coach, I'd want to prove not only to others but also to myself that I'm a solid top reg and in my mind this requires me to be at least beating PLO2k online.

Let's start the blog off with a summary of last month, May 2024.

It was my first month shotting some 500 and it went very well. The volume was quite low, however I was game selecting a bit harder than usual considering it was my first time shotting 500. Also during such a big upswing I kind of lost a bit of motivation to grind. Actually it was my best month in PLO I had so far. My previous best was $11k, so after I hit that amount I kind of wanted to chill a bit. Not exactly the best mindset, but I kind of wanted to book my best month in PLO fearing the upswing may come to an end. Which it kind of did as you will see later this month is a lot tougher.

May 2024: GG PLO200 and PLO500
Hands played: 28782
Hours played: 48
Hands per Hour: 600
Hours studied: 108
Hours worked: 156
Net Won: $8560
Net won + RB: $13,000
Net Won $/hour: $270
EV: $5792
EV+RB: $10,292
EV $/hour: $214

By far my highest $/hour, and I'm sure I couldn't sustain this at PLO500 but I can't complain.

Anyways in my next few posts I'd like to give a bit of background on my poker history, I'll be uploading one post a day until we are up to date. After that, not sure how often I'll update. Definitely monthly updates, but more than that not sure yet. We'll see how much time I have for this.

A bit of history
2016-2017 - The beginning of a poker journey

The first time I played any poker was actually in 2009 or so when I was 18 or 19. It was my senior year in highschool and I read some article in the economist about poker and I got curious. I stole my mom's credit card and created an account on pokerstars. I grinded the lowest stakes of NLHE cashgames available and built a roll to around $500, however one night I got drunk with some friends and decided to sit at a NL500 heads up tables. I proceeded to lose my entire roll. As my girlfriend at the time and family weren't too happy about my poker habit, I thought that would be a good time to quit poker. And since then until much later in my life I wouldn't touch poker again.

I dropped out of my masters degree in business economics to start playing PLO. It was December 2015 when I dropped out of my masters degree, after that I tried a few internships and applying to a few other masters degrees in different subjects (such as law) but ultimately I knew I didn't want a normal job. I chose poker, and something about PLO really allured me from the very start. Instinctively I always knew there was something special about the great game that drew me to it.

PLO was actually the first game I took seriously in poker and really put some effort into. In fact I'd been playing some PLO in my senior year of my bachelors during my free time and that habit continued into my masters degree Something about poker intrigued me because tbh throughout college I just never really felt that the typical way of life and job security was the path for me. I always enjoyed poker and realized quickly it was a game of not only luck but also skill. I probably played about 10-15 hours a week or so and managed to build a roll to a point where I felt comfortable playing PLO50z by the time I started to play professionally. However in the summer of 2016 I took a shot at PLO100, but it went very poorly. I suffered a large downswing in PLO and my soul felt utterly crushed. It was my first real downswing in poker and I'd never quite experienced something like it. I remember smoking a bunch of weed, and crying in sorrow for like a week or so and then I randomly tried out some spin and go's, and at that time the games seemed so extremely soft and I found that without much study I could already beat lowstakes spins at the $15 level. So it wasn't long before I decided to join a stable for spins, this was around September 2017.

I took a couple of long breaks from spins due to burnout where I played a bunch of videogames. I had a 2 month period playing League of Legends and getting a Masters account. I had another 1 month break to play CSGO to get Global Elite quickly. And finally another 2 month break to play Overwatch and achieve top 500. Totalling about 5-6 months off poker during these 2 years. But by the end 2017 I moved up to $100 spins.

Every time I played spins I launched myself fully into it. In fact when it comes to videogames I also launch myself fully into it. Both poker and videogames are strategy games in the end and when I get into them, I really get into them. My life revolves around them. It's quite different now as I've become much more balanced and healthy, but I always had this inner obsessive and unbalanced drive inside me, which always resulted in some sort of remorse and burn out. It had its ups and downs, although I guess this obsession is also what allowed me to move up from 15s to 100s spins in around a year in 2017.

2018 - Debauchery in Malta
In 2018 I was invited by the stable to live in a grindhouse in Malta with other highstakes Spin&Go players. At the same time, the stable asked me to start coaching, although the monetary reward was quite crap (just a slight deal boost in my percentage of the cut), I did agree to do some coaching.

At the same time, the grindhouse was not too great for my poker. We smoked a lot of weed, partied a bunch and poker didn't seem to be our main priority. In combination with my added responsibility of coaching I found my volume was quite terrible although the little volume I did play resulted in having some $10k months somehow.

Around the middle of the year, I decided that I wanted to leave the grindhouse. I went back to Belgium, but what I found was that my pokerstars account was frozen due to them needing time to understand why I was moving back and forth. During this time I was once again playing a bunch of videogames as well as a bit of PLO on the side.

After a couple months of not being able to play poker on my main site at the time and stars taking way too long to solve the problem I decided to move back to Malta, but this time I decided I'd live in my own little flat, however I would be grinding in the office of the stable (their headquarters was and is still located in Malta). The volume increased a bit, but after a couple months off, I found the games had become significantly tougher. This was the time when a lot of the regulars were starting to study with the use of GTO databases, at the time skiers was the first GTO database to solve basically every spot in spins and after just a couple months I noticed that the regs had gotten significantly better. My results weren't too great, maybe slightly more than breakeven in the latter half of 2018.

To cap things off, towards the end of the year in November, my account on pokerstars got banned due to association with my stable at that time. They were doing unethical things such as sharing databases and on pokerstars.it they were queue selecting by having their players communicate when they would sit into the lobbies so that their members wouldn't have to play against eachother.

I won't mention the name of this stable as I have nothing against them anymore and have forgiven them, at least in my mind. However it shouldn't be too hard for anyone who knows anything about spins to know who I am talking about. They seem to still be doing quite well, and after that incident they took many actions to redeem themselves. I hope they are working ethically now and not only worried about their own bottom line but also their players and the poker ecosystem.

I didn't know about the queueing system on .IT and when I found out, I quickly broke my contract with the stable and by the end of the year I moved to Budapest, to start a new life and get as far away from the headquarters of that stable. Seeing as I was almost broke after not making much money for several months, I thought it would be best to join another stable.

This time I joined up with a new stable, headcoached by Nice2Meet885 and Monkeybausss. I managed to negotiate a premium deal with them as long as I could coach for them, and my life in Budapest started.

2019 - If it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger
The end of 2018 and start of 2019 was one of the toughest periods in my life, certainly in my poker career. Having a bad run towards the end of 2018, getting banned from stars and relocating was very taxing. In addition I was almost broke.

But I'm always one to stay hopeful. And I had full trust in my stable, and that my new coaches were 2 of the biggest crushers in spins. In addition, they shared my view of how poker should be played, focusing less on a maximally exploitative approach and more on a GTO/minimally exploitative approach. This is an approach more similar to what we see now on most coaching platforms, but at the time felt quite groundbreaking to me but something that I always sought out and always knew this was my preferred style of studying and playing the game.

As my account on stars was banned I was forced to play on Winamax. I've never been one to test out multiple sites preferring to stay loyal to a site and be comfortable on what I know. But I had no choice, and in this situation it turned out for the best.

I launched myself fully into poker. Without any other distractions in my life I could spend 200+ hours every month on poker, studying and grinding a ton, during the best hours in the middle of the night. With the guidance of my coaches I increased my skill and managed to increase my table count to 9 tables. I became one of the top regs on Winamax 100s espressos and did take a few shots at 250s although they didn't go too great. And around the middle of the year I hit a €100k jackpot. Unfortunately I only came second, but it was still worth 15k. My bankroll got higher than 50,000 Euros, enough for me to feel more safe financially.

I finally felt like the pressure to make money and avoid going broke wasn't as high. However this came with new challenges. All of a sudden, I lost a lot of motivation to grind. Playing the same format of poker, spins, which is one of the simplest forms of poker was getting boring and repetitive. I wanted a bit of a holiday.

Towards the end of 2019, I quit playing spins completely. I was searching for a new challenge. I heard of some people who switched to shortdeck and were doing great. At the time it had a lot of hype around it, Triton was singing praises for that game and said it would be the next NLHE. So I gave that a shot.

TBH, in 6+ I did quite well, I definitely felt I had a big edge, however for some reason, I didn't feel like I loved the game much. A ton of variance and also the game basically felt like a simpler version of NL where a lot of the money simply came from exploiting weaker players.

After a few months playing that game with low volume I decided to just take a holiday, and play some videogames for a while. For some reason I couldn't get on a proper schedule and put in a lot of hours grinding 6+. Videogames are a big vice of mine as I love all strategy games, especially if they are competitive. The only positive to this is that no matter what game I play I can quite easily achieve the top 0.5% of gamers in a given games within 3 months, which is quite an achievement. I've done that in League of Legends, CSGO, overwatch, Valorant and Teamfight Tactics over the years.

In 2019, Teamfight Tactics came out and during this period I actually got myself 3 accounts in the challenger ladder. I gave a shot at streaming and making some content on youtube. But I found it hard to stay consistent and gain a following.

2020 - I need to make money
As I wasted time playing videogames and passively watch my bankroll go back down to uncomfortable levels. I realized that poker is the best way for me to make money. I never had any real work experience outside poker. But as I watched my roll dwindle down to around €20k again, the pressure to make money arised again. And so in Spring I decided to start grinding spins again.

Another great thing happened. My pokerstars account, after only one year got unbanned. Most permanently banned accounts require at least 3 years before getting reviewed, however I exchanged many words with pokerstars and provided them a lot of information and I think this helped me to get myself unbanned in a very short amount of time. I'm happy that pokerstars rewarded me in that way for my honesty and saw that although I was associated to an unethical stable, I personally didn't do anything bad and deserved to be unbanned.

Regardless, in Spring I started playing again on Winamax as I had gotten comfortable with that site and found it very profitable. I started at 25s, but in a month quickly moved up to 50s. It was at this time that pokerstars stars offered me an exclusive challenge around May. This exclusive challenge was something similar to their new rewards scheme however it was available only to certain players. I was lucky to get such a challenge.

This highly incentivized me to play some 50s on stars, and after another month I was already playing 100s again. I rejoined Nice2Meet885 and Monkeybausss, but this time I didn't coach, I managed to get a great deal again but this time where I could focus on simply grinding and being their student. Without any issues I quickly crushed 100s and immediately established myself as one of the top regs on the stake that year.

Between August and November 2020 on 100s, with the help of the exclusive poker challenge from stars, I had my most profitable period to date in poker. Grinding 9 to 12 tables and with the guidance of my coaches I managed to average $20k in EV every month. I finally had a bankroll larger than €100k.

Financially I felt very comfortable now. And I was about to start shotting 250s (again). However things were only going well on the financial front. I was burnt out from grinding hundreds of hours of poker each month in addition to studying. In addition, my health was suffering. I was staying up very late, often until like 7 or 8 in the morning to grind during the softest hours. My diet was poor eating anything. And my social life was close to non-existent.

Not only was I burnt out, but I felt a lot of pressure in spins. I was one of the best regs at 100s and going to play 250s but as soon as I decided I would shot-take 250s I felt this huge pressure. I didn't want to battle for the lobby again. This burn out, pressure to play higher and financial comfort lead me to quit poker again at the tail-end of the year.

2021 - An entire year off poker
When I quit poker this time. I thought I might quit forever this time. I figured that with over 100k in poker I could put all my money, or literally 90% of it into btc and a few other cryptos and try to give a real shot at making content in videogames.

It was really quite a rushed and silly decision. I didn't know almost anything about the crypto space, I just saw that crypto was doing great and put all my money into it. While I did a bit of research I mostly just played a bunch of videogames and once again creating some content. My main game this time was Valorant, where I got a radiant account and created several smurfs that got up to Immortal.

My poor health and bad habits and isolation continued this year. I was inconsistent in the content creation area. And towards the end of 2021 cryptos started to crash. I realized I didn't have the extraverted personality to make content in videogames and it required a different kind of energy. I took a year off poker, but with the crash of crypto I saw my roll go back below €50k, and I once again felt some pressure to make money.

2022 - Touch Off
In December 2021, I decided that it's time to start playing poker again. I took quite a long time to think about whether I wanted to play spins again or try a new format.

Spins were comfortable to me, I'd gained a lot of knowledge and was sure that I could get back to 100s relatively quickly. However there were several downsides. Firstly my past history in spins indicated that I would be prone to quitting again. It seemed somewhat obvious that I didn't have a true love for the game. There are several things I really didn't like about spins.

Firstly, the simplicity of the game. Spins and HUSNG were one of the first formats to be completely solved by solvers. It doesn't take a genius to have a decent estimation of GTO in almost every spot. And I felt there was a cap to how much more I could learn that would actually be of any real use against real players.

Secondly, the money cap of spins. If you compare how much money the best spin and go players earn, it is really nothing compared to how much the best players in cashgames or MTTs win. Unless you win a $1 million jackpot of course, which is purely based on luck. But in spins even the very best players at 500s are only making maybe $30,000 a month, while you have the very top players in cashgames or MTTs making over a million dollars a year.

Thirdly, the ecosystem of spins. Almost all regulars in spins have been in a stable at some point, and many of them choose to stay with stables throughout their career since basically all the strategy knowledge and information is in stables in that format. I would estimate over half the regs to be in a stable.

The other part of the ecosystem of spins I didn't enjoy was the "king of the hill" system. The truth is, I'm not super competitive. Obviously as a poker player I have some element of competition in me, but it's not near the top of my values. In spins if I wanted to be one of the top regs, I'd be highly incentivized to open as many tables as I could. If I can play more tables than my opponents, then the other regs are less incentivized to sit in at the same time as me as they would have to play all their games against me provided that I was playing significantly more tables than them, meaning that I would in turn also have the highest chance of playing against fish. It was a very predatory ecosystem, but at the same time, when another top reg was grinding at the same time as me, I wouldn't particularly enjoy simply battling it out with them on 9+ tables just to hold the lobby together and try to get some fish to play with.

I also didn't like that almost all the profits came from rakeback. A top reg in spins may be winning in EV pre-rakeback, but it will still be rakeback that makes up for 70%+ of their income. This means whatever forms of rakeback, whether it be some exclusive challenge or some leaderboards are going to be extremely important, incentivizing a ton of volume.

Knowing all the factors that I didn't enjoy in spins. I sought out a format that would be different, while offering me all the positives of the things I love about poker.

I wanted a complicated game that I could spend a lifetime studying a still feel like I was learning something useful. This ruled out something like short deck but opened the door towards MTTs, NL cash or PLO cash. At the same time, all these formats are relatively well studied and solvers have been out in these formats for some time. NL cash turned me off because solvers have been out for so long in that format, due to that it is extremely well studied by now and I would have to do a ton of catch-up work. So it was really between MTTs, and PLO 4 or 5 cards for me.

MTTs turned me off due to the fact that again a lot of players are in stables. Not only that but I disliked the inability to be able to take breaks and lack of autonomy. It seemed like PLO was the obvious option. It seemed like the perfect time to get into 4 card PLO.

4card PLO is still developing in the areas of solvers and GTO but it had more tools out there than 5card. Which was perfect for me because I didn't want to jump into a format with no great study tools. But solvers were new in PLO and I saw I wouldn't need to do so much catch-up in that area, however the availability to dive into theory study was still highly available. The situation is different now and there are more 5-card study tools available now, and if I was to choose a format today perhaps it would be 5-card. But at the time, 4-card seemed perfect.

And so my PLO journey started in earnest at the start of 2022.

Honestly, I didn't know what I was getting into. I overestimated my poker ability. I thought that because I was one of the biggest crushers in spins that I could crush PLO immediately. I jumped into 200 zoom on stars and GG but found myself getting crushed. Not only that but I was running under EV.

My volume that year was quite low. I hadn't put in volume in poker for a long time, so I needed to learn how to grind again. In addition as it was my first year in PLO, I put in extra effort studying the basics of the game. I was a beginner in this format and quickly got humbled. I moved down to PLO100 to stop the bleeding.

Finally, I also realized I needed to change my lifestyle. I was in my 30s now, and grinding in the middle of the night simply wasn't a great idea for my health. I started dating again after the first time in many years to get my social life back on track. I started exercising and following a healthier diet. I spent some months away from poker just reading a lot, watching podcasts and learning how to live a healthy balanced life.

Any money I made in poker wouldn't cover the cost of my living expenses, and with the crash of cryptos I lost a significant amount of money. It was a very difficult period again. As BTC reached $20k, I pulled all my money out of cryptos and decided to focus only on PLO as my source of money. If I was to invest in crypto again in the future it would be only a small part of my bankroll with much lower risk and more conservative.

Towards the end of 2022 I was almost broke again. Many of my life leaks and unhealthy habits had been fixed. But now it was time to focus more on poker again. I was once again close to busto and I would have to put in a hard year of work not to go broke.

My 2022 results, not so pretty and mostly stars zoom with a bit of GG mixed in:

2023 - Commitment
The end of 2022 and start of 2023 was once again one of my darkest periods in poker. As 2023 started, I was in a very dark place but there was hope. There is always hope within me, always the optimist. Close to being broke, I saw I needed to make a bigger commitment to poker. This is why I started a study group. I'm proud to say now that this study group has been going strong since it's creation and has been one of the most beneficial things I have done towards my poker career.

I looked at my results and found that my results on GGpoker reg tables were better than on stars. So I decided to focus fully on GGpoker. Grinding the reg tables. It was a bit surprising to me how important rakeback turned out to be again. The rake on GG is so large that winning pre-rakeback is already quite a task and similar to spins, only the strongest regs are actually beating the rake. However, including the leaderboards on GG I found I could achieve about 5bb/100 only from rakeback so any additional winrate is already great.

I'm not a huge fan of making money mainly from rakeback, however my experience from spins is helping me out a lot in that regard. I know what it means to be a rakeback grinder due to the spins experience. And I also learnt how to multitable and increase my table count due to my experience from spins.

At the start of 2023 I was focusing only on grinding PLO100 reg tables. Looking to get myself out of a hole. And I focused on putting in more hours. I developed a schedule where instead of going for consistently grinding for example 4 hours a day, I would focus a few days a week on putting in more volume and trying to get a nice place on the leaderboards by grinding for example 3 or 4 days a week but many hours, such as 8-10 hours in a day.

Here are my results for 2023:

Breakeven in EV however rakeback meant that I won roughly $40,000, which isn't terrible.

Around hand 160,000 is when I started to grind PLO200, and I quickly moved to make PLO200 my main stake. I increased my table count to the max amount on GG, 9 tabling my way to grinding the leaderboards.

I never considered myself a top reg at PLO200 last year, however I was good enough and could play enough tables that I could make good money with leaderboard money.

The period around when I moved up to PLO200, is also around the period when I started to date my current girlfriend. Before her, I had been single for a very long time basically my entire poker career. And even though in 2022 I started dating, it was mostly casual and short flings. In this woman I found a deep connection, and an emotional connection I couldn't have imagined feeling for my robotic self. We're very different but share similar visions and values, and this makes for an amazing complement to each other. I think she has brought a ton of balance and support to my life. Which is one of the reasons I believe since I met her I haven't took any extended breaks from poker and have remained quite consistent with poker, even if I haven't put in any record breaking months in terms of volume or hours, I'm happy with the progress and consistency I've achieved since the start of 2023.

The volume could have been a bit better considering I can play 9 tables. However considering the amount of hours I put into studying, and that I took a short holiday to Croatia (my first real holiday in many years), and I spent a month moving into a new a apartment with my girlfriend, I'm quite satisfied.

2024 - Breakout
At the start of 2024, I set my sights on moving up to PLO500. I felt like I had made a good amount of progress. Having played almost 700k hands and gaining a lot of experience but also having studied thousands of hours. In addition, I worked with my study group for over a year by now and gotten a lot of insight and differing views on how PLO should be played from my poker friends. All of this meant that I felt like things were starting to click.

The main methods of study in the study group switched to more work with monkersolver. Where-as before most of our study was done with the use of GTO-libraries such as PLOtrainer and Vision, our group focused to going into more details with monker and finding intricate exploits that are hard to re-exploit. I started to feel like I was one of the strongest regs on PLO200. And it showed in my results.

2024 results so far:

I'm very happy to report that in less than half a year and less than half the volume, I've already surpassed my overall results of 2023. I hope to make double what I did last year.

At the start of May, around the 130,000 hand mark is when I started to play some PLO500. This coincided with a beautiful upswing and a great start to PLO500 as you see that steep uphill around that point. It seemed like I wouldn't have too much trouble sticking as a PLO500 reg.

I also managed to increase my table count to 12 tables. This means I'm actually mixing stakes currently. As my sleep and health is much more of a priority than a few years back when grinding spins, I play during the day now, so normally when I grind it isn't possible to play more than 6 tables on one of my stakes. 9 tables only tend to run during the evening hours and I rarely grind after 8PM in the evening. However by mixing PLO200 and PLO500 I'm able to often hit my 12 table cap, and actually due to this I've found I'm able to play more hands/hour in general rather than playing only as many tables as possible on PLO200.

I notice however when playing 12 tables, it is much more taxing than 9 tables. Unless I'm super focused and playing A-game it is easy to miss out on a lot of small spots and not fight for all the pots. My redline tends to be much better when playing 9 or less tables compared to 12 tables, and hence my EV too. I'm reaching close to my current limit, however I know that I need to push myself in order to improve my skills. And I'm always up for a challenge.

This is basically the end of my summary of my poker history and we are all caught up. Will post some monthly results now, maybe a few hands, maybe a few other thoughts and answer to any replies/questions here. Hope you enjoy the blog.

Swingy month to say the least. Hoping to get at least 40k hands this month, though 50k would be nice

What site are you playing that you can profitably play 12-15 tables?

TY, what sites do you play on if in Belgium? One of the reasons I moved out of Belgium is to get rakeback which isn't available on most big sites. I guess you'd be limited to unlicensed sites such as ACR and apps or some very soft regulated sites, which IDK of.

What site are you playing that you can profitably play 12-15 tables?

As mentioned in the blog I play exclusively on GG network for now and am not playing 15 tables currently, only up to 12 and a lot of times I won't hit that table cap due to lack of action.

[QUOTE=Xptboy;58608219]Thanks!

TY, what sites do you play on if in Belgium? One of the reasons I moved out of Belgium is to get rakeback which isn't available on most big sites. I guess you'd be limited to unlicensed sites such as ACR and apps or some very soft regulated sites, which IDK of.

I only play on Stars, no rakeback indeed, it makes me mad but that's just the way it is...Well it forces me to make some money pre RB 😀

As I'm for being a pro, it's ok for me although very frustrating.

Hey guys, as I already mentioned about 1 and half years ago I created a study group. This group is still going strong however we have lost one member recently and are looking for a replacement. I will write a summary of the group here:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am the organizer of a well-established, consistent and organized study group focused on online PLO 4card cash games.

This study group has been going strong now for over 1.5 years. It is made up of 6 poker players who each strive to improve in the game of PLO and consider themselves students of the game. All players within this group are smart and doing well in the games they play, which is between PLO200 up to PLO5000 (although in the past we even had players playing higher), in addition one of our players also plays some HS PLO MTTs above 1k buy-ins.

The main focus of the group, is to use all available tools, data and experience together to gain a good theoretical understanding of important, common and interesting spots in order to create solid and implementable strategies that are theory approved as well as exploitatively approved. Most of our meetings are focused around theory, solver use and GTO and exploitative lines from a theoretical approach. We don't spend too much time doing liveplay reviews, sweat sessions or hand reviews as we believe putting more time into theoretical work is simply more helpful in general.

There has been a lot of discussion within the group in the past about what are the best study methods and tools. After much discussion, we have all agreed the best tool currently available is simply monkersolver. Although it takes the most time to use, it is by far the best tool as there are many things monker can do that typical GTO libraries cannot do, such as nodelocking players ranges, or choosing our own betsize(s) according to the situation. This is why, one of the requirements of the group is that you can use monkersolver, or at least you want to start using it if you cannot currently use it.

We believe that by coordinating our efforts, we can distribute the workload and learn from each-other, speeding up our learning and knowledge.

The group works by a schedule and rotation of "presentations" system. Using such a system, each individual in the group is expected to give one theory-based "presentation" once every 2 weeks.

If our group consists of only 5 members, then every 2 weeks we can also have one meeting for a liveplay or hand review, although these can really be done whenever if someone wants by simply asking for someone in the group to review some footage with them or something.

We meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 3PM CET (Berlin/Vienna time). Our meetings tend to last anywhere between 30minutes to 2 hours long. Sometimes a topic is very interesting and we want to do a bunch of training on it so the meeting will be closer to 2 hours long, other times the topic is simpler and a short 45 minute meeting will suffice.

An example of a schedule could be like this.

Week 1:
Monday: Member 1 presentation
Wednesday: Member 2 presentation
Friday: Member 3 presentation

Week 2:
Monday: Member 4 presentation
Wednesday: Member 5 presentation
Friday: Member 6 presentation OR hand review/liveplay review if only 5 members in group currently.

Repeat

When it comes to topics that you have to work on. We do not assign anything specific to you, or have a focus as a group on a particular topic. While we did do this in the past, we found it too restrictive. For example, some individuals may have not enjoyed the topic they were working on, or sometimes one topic can bring up many questions about another different but related topic that someone may want to explore. However assigning people things to work on takes that freedom away. Some people may prefer to spend several presentations covering a large broad topic such as going over all streets, both IP and OOP and many subgroups of board textures for given positions for example, whilst others may simply want to briefly cover a concise topic before moving on to the next one, for example in one presentation they focus on BUvBB A high Flops CB as IP, and then in the next topic they decide to switch to something completely different and cover COvBU stabs as IP on 2 BW Flops, etc.

The only expectation is that you attend most of our meetings, and that you study something of your interest in your own time, and present it to us once every 2 weeks. Therefore the ideal candidate for this group is simply somebody that loves PLO and loves to study the game and has many things that they would themselves like to explore in PLO. It's an amazing game with tons of stuff to explore.

Every 2 months we have a roadmap meeting to talk about how the group is doing, if anything in the group should be changed, what topics each individual may want to focus on in the near future so that there won't be too much overlap between what we are doing. Over the past 2 years, the way the group has worked, and what tools we agree to use has changed. This is how the group has developed and become the group it is now.

This may seem like a lot of work, but there are many teams who have risen to the top in poker. For example, the German crew in MTTs, or before BitB was a stable they were simply a study group. Being a part of a well organized study group with other smart and hard working individuals can be one your most valuable assets in poker and propel your learning curve in the game. As €uropean and Fedor Holz mentioned in their podcasts on the Mechanics of Poker, they attribute a ton of their success to the people they worked with.

So if a group like this appeals to you. Feel free to contact me and send me a PM on:
discord: pierre.r
2+2: Xptboy

Requirements to join:
- Be able to use monkersolver, or at least be willing to start using it.
- Reasonable stakes, let's say PLO200+ although if you play PLO100 and crush it then we could consider that.
- Have enough time to come to most of our meetings and create your own presentations.
- Speak good enough English to speak the language of Poker (you don't have to be fluent in English).

What you can gain from joining this study group:
- Consistently working with and exchanging ideas with some of the best and smartest players playing mid to highstakes PLO at their respective stake levels.
- Getting a deeper understanding of the game, theory-wise as well as lots of study on exploits, population and database analysis.
- Our study group has a library of previous videos that you will have full access to. All our sessions are now being video recorded and saved within our group. So far we have 50+ and counting videos.
- Being part of this study group will motivate you to study and improve your game, it will force you to actually to do some study in order to share something with us.
- Consistent meetings but also a discord group where you can privately share hands or ideas with other members of the study group.
- Have some social contact with other poker players and the possibility for reputable future contacts.

Applications to the group tend to come quite fast, so if you want to join you should send me a message ASAP. And don't get tilted if you don't get accepted. If you have the qualifications but were too late, I would add you to a waiting list and contact you as soon as/if someone were to leave the group giving you priority before making a public announcement again.

Subbed.

Really like your history as there are many aspects of poker I can relate.

Loving the thread so far 😀

Had one of my worst sessions yesterday. It started well but after a break I came back and there were 12 tables running but I didn't have great energy and found myself unable to focus. Made tons of mistakes.

Luckily this morning I won a table-share of a BBJ

Which actually means I won about 1.5k since yesterday including that.

It's my 3rd table share of a BBJ on GG after almost 1 million hands. TBH I deserve the actual BBJ, but hey I won't complete about a table share.

If I have AT+ I'm prolly jamming for value, while I can still have some bluffs, I don't understand why people only donk value.
