In other news

In the current news climate we see that some figures and events tend to dominate the front-pages heavily. Still, there are important, interesting or just plain weird things happening out there and a group of people can find these better than one.

I thought I would test with a thread for linking general news articles about "other news" and discussion. Perhaps it goes into the abyss that is page 2 and beyond, but it is worth a try.

Some guidelines:
- Try to find the "clean link", so that links to the news site directly and not a social media site. Avoid "amp-links" (google).
- Write some cliff notes on what it is about, especially if it is a video.
- It's not an excuse to make outlandish claims via proxy or link extremist content.
- If it's an editorial or opinion piece, it is polite to mark it as such.
- Note the language if it is not in English.
- There is no demand that such things be posted here, if you think a piece merits its own thread, then make one.

You only need to provide a PIN if you're getting cash. This goes for both debit withdraws and credit cash advances.

Stores claim they have policies to check ID above certain thresholds, but even that is ineffective if the retail worker can't be bothered to actually look at it.

If cities are proposing mask bans again, then there is clearly evidence of an uptick in masked bandits.

Or simply masks make it harder to identify criminals

That is just nuts . What backwards state do you live in ?
Here you can tap up to $200 other than that you insert your card and enter a 4 digit pin for a purchase . Its been that way I think for at least 10 years in Canada

In italy it's no pin under 25 euro, pin sometimes 25-50, always pin over 50. No cash without pin.

and if you do many small transactions in a row in a brief period of time, random pin requests can happen (otherwise a thief could use 100 times for 20 euro or something like that).

Don't think state matters. Credit cards you tap or insert chip with no pin. Only debit cards have pins by default but you really shouldn't use debit cards.

There's nothing inherently wrong with debit cards.

the US has some of the worst payment processing in the developed world. we're a solid decade to a decade and a half behind the rest of the world. i would suspect because of the influence the banking industry has on politicians allowing them to collude.

most tap systems came in within the last 3-5 years.

There's nothing inherently wrong with debit cards.

Except the part where they provide direct access to your cash.

The cascading effect if someone wipes out your checking account is potentially much, much worse than someone blowing up a credit card.

Nobody should use a debit card when credit cards exist.

I never saw the point of hem. You don't get any rewards and they have way less fraud protection than credit cards. That said I do have one, but I keep less than 10k in that account only make cash deposits and don't link it to any other banking/investment accounts. I only really use it when I need cash for some reason which is maybe a few times a year.

Listen guys, masks are bad now, so bad we are thinking about making it illegal to wear them in public (signed: the same people who mandated masks)

New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said Monday that he has questions about Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposal to reinstate a pre-pandemic ban on

What about freedom?
Since when government should tell us on what we can wear right ?
If wearing mask for health issue was the most fascist law since ww2 (luciom words) imagine how banning it means ….

Because you are rational so you wouldn't go into credit card debt unless it's proper for you to do so.

Many people aren't that rational

I wouldn't ban them but I would severely increase sentences for crimes committed while wearing them.

Btw in general forcing a behavior is an ever worse form of freedom limitation than banning a non essential behavior.

Forcing a behavior means owning the bodies/time of people.

Sooo....Louisiana is now requiring the 10 commandments be displayed in every public school classroom. That's pretty rich coming from the party that thinks trump is only one notch below god.

Aren't the 10 commandments universally good?

He's not wrong

They do, but so do Asian tourists, for at least the last 30 years.

no

I don't think it's good to worship god, which is in the very first one. Keeping the sabbath day holy is also very bad.

Personally I also don't like the one about honoring your father and mother, but if others want to do that, it's their business.

don't kill requires an accompanying manual on when, actually, you can kill and it's moral to do so which let's say makes for very bad legislation.

I also want to be able to shop, work and go to restaurants on Saturday

That being said, demographics is destiny, so looks like the future of humanity is going to be a very pious one.

What are these maps showing? That thumping on bibles releases heat?

Really, I don't get what these maps are showing, there is a key with some numbers I can't even make out, but no clue as to what they represent.

Didn't realize the legends didn't make the pic. Religiosity and birthrate respectively. I have every confidence you can deduce the directionality of each respective pic.

Spain holding down the fort (for Europe, at least). Vamos!

Have to give credit where credit is due - pretty smart of god botherer elders to decree that contraception makes baby jesus cry, thereby ensuring maximum propagation chances for their virus.

Humans offspring are insanely time and resource intensive, especially in a pre technology world. If you really think about it, it is actually pretty amazing humans as a species have survived as long as they have. If just a little bit higher % of our ancestors had decided to just relax and enjoy life instead of putting so much effort into having and raising children, none of us would probably be here.

What you call a virus was probably highly adaptive, possibly even necessary, for the species to get to this point.

Who knows, it might be the case even in a modern world that religiosity may be necessary as far as survival of the species goes.

Even taking all your points as given, you have made no argument whatsoever how religion played a part in any of this.

You spelled it out yourself. Religiosity/religion seems very good at getting people to reproduce. And may have been evolutionarily selected for this reason. It really is that simple.
