the tariff on EVs is really a mask off moment for establishment leftists like Biden and Trudeau. instead of giving 15 billion dollars of taxpayer money to Volkswagen to bribe them to build EVs here we could have just let the Chinese do it. if they want to subsidize EVs at the expense of the Chinese taxpayer then by all means go for it. but of course Trudeau and Biden are more beholden to the special interests that fund their and their parties political campaigns than they are to the American or Canadian public. corporate welfare. cronyism. this government reeks of corruption. the liberals have been feeding at the public trough for too long. now they are spending $200,000 + just to cater elaborate four course meals on their flights, not to mention half a million in hotel charges (hope he brought us back some of those little soaps from the Ritz Jakarta so we get our moneys worth). How about this, the next time there is an ASEAN summit, or some big climate change conference, we send a "sorry we can't make it" apology letter. That's $5 at shoppers drug mart, throw in another $3 for the stamps and we're good to go. In case nobody has noticed, we have an affordability crisis and are well into a stagflationary recession. The last thing our political overlords should be doing is hobnobbing with the Indo-Pacific elite in the far east.

The way inflation is going we're all going to be paying $14 for a glass of orange juice. Might have to switch to orange 'drink'.
Anyway, I think the effect of this latest capital gains hike is going to be devastating to the Canadian economy. While it may seem like a convenient way to soak the rich, the reality is our economy is crying out for foreign investment. It's not like we have large pools of consumer savings to draw upon, just trillions of dollars in consumer debt. And with the general antipathy of this government towards business, as well as all of the corporate welfare and subsidies, and the oppressive regulatory environment, I don't blame companies for being reluctant to do business in Canada. And now a massive capital gains tax hike on top of all that (no minimum exemption for corporations also). What the Trudeau liberals don't understand is that this is a global economy and businesses can choose to invest wherever they want. And Canada is becoming a less and less attractive place to invest every day.
On the other hand, if the elites succeed in their goal of turning us into a third world country, I guess we can leverage our poverty level wages as our comparative advantage.
And more kowtowing to the enviro-whacko lobby, the provincial liberals are banning "open-net pen salmon farming" in B.C.

I am on the fence on this one . They say the fish are susceptible to disease but you think you could address this. Though states like Washington have banned it as well . Oh wait they banned coal shipments through their ports as well

The 67% isn't what you PAY on wealth. It is the inclusion rate. So if you have a small business for instance, and AFTER the 1.25 million lifetime exemption, the eligible capital gains after that is included at 67% and then the amount that is included is what you pay tax on at whatever you tax rate is.

There's nothing wrong with the latter - most people don't know a lot about how capital gains tax works, as it doesn't affect them. Perfectly understandable. But if that's the case for you, probably best not to use limited knowledge of capital gains tax to criticize the government.

Well most Canadians aren't ever in their life rich enough for it to matter one way or the other. So it makes sense most normal people are confused - it doesn't affect them. And unfortunately Poilievre has been riding the line of truth on this issue (his statements ARE true - unlike lozen - but often lack enough context that you could believably assume something very false). As on many issues, like the carbon tax, when you have a side that does partisan critiques of everything with questionable connection to the truth, their acolytes are going to end up very, very confused.

The kangaroo human rights tribunals have reared their ugly head again. This time awarding 35,000 to an indigenous transwoman because they were "misgendered" by Spa owner Jason Carruthers. He was also forced to undergo online re-education, adding insult to injury. All he did was say that he didn't have a staff member that could provide male waxxing services. It's not that enough that these people have to live in their own delusional world where a fat guy puts on a dress and all of a sudden he's a lady, we have to humour their delusions or face legal repercussions.
Even more sickening, when Carruthers complained to the media about being railroaded by the human rights tribunal, this constituted "reprisal".
Apparently, A.B., the applicant, was so distraught about being misgendered that he/she/they/it turned to hard drugs (not for the first time I'm guessing) and tried to commit suicide.
