Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Ukraine-Russia War Take 2

Here is what the preliminary take on the Ukraine thread disappearing is:

The site was hit with a massive spam attack where hundreds of spam threads were created. In the case where, for example, I see a single spam thread and delete it, that is called a soft delete, and mods can still see them but forum members cannot. Those deletion can be undone.

When a massive attack hits with hundreds of threads, an admin uses a different procedure where the hundreds of spam threads are merged and then hard deleted, where the threads are gone, and no note is left behind. As I have mentioned with my own experience of just soft deleting a large number of posts, sometimes a post or thread gets checked or merged accidentally and is deleted by mistake. Dealing with hundreds of spam threads takes a sledgehammer, not a scalpel.

It appears that our Ukraine thread may have gotten caught up in that recent net of spam threads. If so, it is likely gone for good. I cant say this for sure, and am awaiting comments from admins on this issue. Yes, this sucks. And hopefully there was some other software glitch that caused the disappearance, and we may recover it in the future.

But in the meantime, I have created this new Ukraine-Russia War thread to enable the conversation to continue. Obviously continuity with earlier discussions will be lost. There is no way around that. So as best as possible, let's pick up the conversation with recent events and go from there.

If you have any questions about this, please post them in the mod thread, not here. Let's keep this thread going with posts about the war, not the disappearance of the old thread.

Thanks.

Of course the truth is the last nation that actually had a desire to attack Russia in Russia was Nazi Germany. I read some report that when Russian agents got their hands on classified US military documents they were surprised and disappointed there was no contingency to invade Russia. Not even a hypothetical. It has never even occurred to us.

It just shows how much of a technological deficit Russia has compared to the West that with conventional weapon hand me downs Ukraine could probably destroy Moscow right now, and Russia couldn't do anything about it.

You don't think Russia could destroy Kiev?

This is Western thought where killing civilians is the end goal and considered winning.

russia is currently sending tanks into ukraike which havent seen play since 1948, where the **** are they going to get advanced anti ship missiles from

tbf no tanks in the world have really seen play since relavent play since 1945 XD

I currently see two methods which Russia can use to destroy Kyiv. One they are already in the midst of doing, the other is nukes. What methods do you think exist?

The Western thought is the fear of provoking a larger response so allowing things to become drawn out, potentially killing even more in the long run and encouraging further bad action. In this scenario the only party which thinks killing civilians is the end goal and considered winning (since they've failed all of their previous goals) is Russia/Putin.

Desert storm and Iraq say otherwise.

there was barely tank battles tho. They were barely used. The money spent on tanks by contries has been 99.9999% a waste of money. at least Russia gets to use their garbage tanks from decades ago. Tanks are worth way more then human lives fyi . sad but true

tanks are amazing against defenseless civilians as the IDF will tell you.

or against surrendering soldiers as the USA will tell you after they bury them alive for funsies.

ya but they dont use tanks because they make economic sense. they use them because its bad press if a couple more soldiers die. Russia don't care about that . Israel could invade gaza with a couple thousand footmen but tanks actually probably keep the civilian count lower too because the solders are in tanks and less trigger happy

Tanks have been extremely important in Ukraine.

After the 1973 Arab Israeli War and Desert Storm they were so important that it was believed that future wars would come down to massing tanks and destroying the side's mass of tanks.

Yall don’t realize how important tanks are until they come flying at you en masse and you realize they are going to breach your lines and overrun your position

The only thing that can stop them is more tanks , basically.

Tanks have been protecting South Korea forever

And we used tanks a ton in Iraq/ Afghanistan (marine corp said no more tanks in afghan tho)

Do you consider Bradley’s tanks? They are tracked vehicles with 25mm cannons and decently thick armor

A Bradley is not a tank, it's an IFV.

Also a fun fact: when they were being tested 40ish years ago, they were believed to be lacking in protection against Russian tanks of the type so several senior engineers were fired. The clip last year of two of them taking a T90 was insane. They've done incredibly well.

Why isn’t it a tank?

Bradleys serve completely different roles from tanks. They also have lighter armor and smaller weapons.

ya ifvs have definitely been important since 1945

I mean the only plans would be to nuke the **** out of them, no one wants to invade a ****ing irradiated wasteland.. We would be too busy trying to grow crops in bunkers with HPS lights.

But NATO expansion threatened Russia!

I'm reading it in the print version but there is an interesting article in The Economist on how Russian industrial production is struggling to keep up with demand and how unless something changes, Russia may have to adjust its strategy to a more defensive one by the end of the year or even earlier.

Russia's industrial production has never kept up with demand. Their refurbishment efforts have been pulling the majority of the weight.

The writing has been on the wall for awhile that these efforts were going to not be enough soon as well. The fact that Russia is increasingly using motorcycles, golf carts, and electric scooters is a clear sign that they recognize the problems they face. It's also a safe bet that Belusov (an economist) was chosen as head of the MoD so he could try to figure out what to do in this regard.

Where Russia is doing well with production however is missiles. And the war will increasingly be determined by who can destroy the other's economy more successfully.

Russia is exhausting its munition stocks and can't replace lost armoured vehicles or aircraft. Instead Russia is becoming dependent on China, Iran and North Korea for armaments. The Chinese are probably very pleased about this. The Russians maybe less so.

we have literally heard this same argument since the first months of the war. I will believe when I see it. bc meanwhile Russia is shooting more mortars and taking more territory and has no manpower issues.

I don't think I heard a single person saying this the first months of the war.

They have manpower issues.

The SMO started February 24, 2022, over a year before this article was published.

This article is also correct, but that doesn't mean the problems reach a critical failure point overnight. This is the same logic fail people talking about how "sanctions don't work" fell into when Russia's economy didn't fail overnight.

Even now Russia will still probably be able to reburfish enough equipment to continue attacking at this pace into 2025.
