Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

Moderation Questions and General Chat Thread

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

crossnerd turned up in the i/p thread a few months ago...
does that answer your question

And, Jan 6 was a peaceful, invitational tour of the capital with the guards as escorts....

by PointlessWords P

One mod admitted to looking for a reason to ban Mets

Who did this?

by BOIDS P

mets had her on ignore the whole time and did not respond to any of her abusive posts, it was a one-way street.

This seems straightforwardly untrue; you can't put a moderator on ignore.

Can't say whether every single detail given by BOIDS is true, but Crossnerd has obviously only very recently been made mod. The animosity between the two of them goes back much longer than the two or three months she has been green.

I believe she was on ignore before and then he couldn’t ignore he once she became green

We should vote on removing crossnerds powers and bringing back Mets to the forum

How do we get that done? Do the desires of other posters have no significance?

I'd like to see a more elective process for mod duties of this forum specifically. It would very much be in the spirit of P&S to do so. Maybe creating specific roles (like forum President for example) would be a fun thing to do once a year.

TBH, if what BOIDS says is true, I feel a little uncomfortable with a moderator having ascribed sub-human characteristics to another poster in front of the whole community. One of the things I've learned from living in psych wards is that everyone has a human heart - and even if unreachable - everyone deserves the time and place to be touched by a loving hand....without exception.

this is not a democracy

What, exactly was said?

OK but I feel like this isn't the place for that.

this is not a democracy

It could be tho

I veto your call for a vote.

It can’t be a democracy while it’s owned privately imo.

They should abandon the idea of having people censoring other people’s conversations and restrict mod powers to cleaning up spam and other admin tasks.

In what other walk of life do we tolerate such censorship?

by PointlessWords P

It could be tho

in the same sense that you could win the powerball, sure. but in reality, it's not happening here. no chance.

It is super easy for people in charge to make P/S forum a representative democracy

Its never happening and you need to accept the fact that based on which side of a political spectrum you fall in depends on how much leeway you have . If you lean left you can openly and multiple times hope for the death of a presidential candidate . You can even make fun of the potential VP on his sexual preference and even the Trans Police Captain Uke will let it slide

Didn't I just point out that Cross has only been mod for a couple of months?

Why do we need “representatives”? Because we’ve always had them?

This wouldn’t end well. Take a look at the shithole that UP became once battle lines had been drawn between the establishment mod bootlickers and posters who disagreed with them politically.

astronauts jpeg of course but the existence and behaviour of elected mods made it even worse and half the forum left due to one sided moderation.

Who was making fun? You think republicans are going to vote for a gay VP? That's what the discussion is about. Same thing as people saying oh Harris is a woman or an Indian.

I’m speculating on how that changes the voting

I don't think we want any semblance of a democracy in the moderation of this forum. I have lurked a few times in UP, where they tried something like that, and it looks like a huge mess over there. All we really need is for moderators to mod objectively. It isn't even some huge ask; nobody ever accuses Rococo, Ganstaman, or King Spew of using their mod powers to attack their forum rivals. And then we have our newest mod that chose to permaban the most prolific poster on the entire site for a completely benign post. She then says he can come back, as long as he grovel before her and beg for forgiveness. If there is a saving grace, it is that she seems to not be around too often, so there are long stretches of time where there isn't any drama, but that of course stops as soon as somebody remembers that Mets is banned for no reason.

And Mets has to grovel to come back

Personally, crossnerd shouldn’t be a mod here because of it

Groveling and committing to a change in behavior are not the same things.

by DonkJr P

Didn't I just point out that Cross has only been mod for a couple of months?

Yes. It does not change the basic fact that you can't put a mod on ignore.

by DonkJr P

She then says he can come back, as long as he grovel before her and beg for forgiveness.

This is also very clearly a lie; she's explicitly said the opposite.

Maybe you just need your morning coffee, but your trolling game is pretty weak this morning. WTF happened to you, man? You used to be beautiful!

Take my passive-aggressive, ironic "like" as a consolation prize.

I guess it reflects positively on you as a lawyer that you're this terrible at lying.

This would be a primary with no candidates.

Unmoderated political forums almost always follow the same path. People start to realize that all manner of trolling, bigotry, hate mongering, and edge-lording is permitted on a particular platform or site. Then trolls, bigots, hate mongers, and edge lords start to migrate to the platform or site. Then the people who don't want to be associated with that kind of stuff abandon the platform or site.

This isn't an iron rule, of course. Some platforms and sites are too inconsequential to attract the sort of migration I am describing. (Maybe 2+2 is now one of them. I don't know.) And some platforms like X are large enough to retain users, especially users with large numbers of followers, at least until a viable alternative presents itself.

But if 2+2 became a welcoming place for the worst people on the internet, and those people actually started to migrate to the site, I would leave immediately and I suspect many others would as well. There are certain things that I am unwilling to be associated with, even if my personal posting is entirely defensible.
