The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

I like to point out how most people who despise trans people are actually just horrible people themselves. Phresh thinks a reasonable reaction to a handful of bad pitbulls is to wipe out every single pitbull in existence. Typically its evil to want to unalive 20+ million loved family pets but he really really really really really wants that to happen

Just like many of the other posters in this thread who hate trans people have some very un

Again, what the F do pitbulls have to do with trans people? You are unwell, sir. I suggest you seek immediate help.
What have I said that is hateful? Please tell me. I hate no one. Questioning the legitimacy of what appears to be a delusion is not hatred; it’s concern. Concern born from compassion.

What chemicals? Name them.

Compositions may be more accurate.

1. I’m not a doctor.
2. You made the claim. The responsibility is yours to back it up. Otherwise, you’re lying.

this is where paying attention could help. I was asked to provide a hypothesis after saying "Scientists don't know, I don't know"

then you should look around and question why many of the people who hold your opinions are hateful bigots with no empathy or compassion

Other than the fact that a man’s brain is slightly larger, what else you got?

You said definitively that there is a physiological difference. I want to know what that would be.

Hateful according to whom? You? You who are intolerant of people with different opinions?

Actual scientists don't know so this is a really stupid request

This is why I said it was a stupid request. I'm just a regular guy shooting the ****. But this is the difference between presenting something up front as an opinion vs generally twisting opinions to appear as facts

No, its generally accepted that racism is hateful

But you didn’t give an opinion. You said there is a physiological difference that explains trannyism. I mean, I’m not surprised you’re refusing to answer the follow up questions. I’m still waiting for the “psychiatrist” to explain how puberty blockers and hormones save lives.

Are you saying gender is the same as race now? I’m honestly concerned about your mental health.

You are a truth seeker which is why you willingly took on the problems of trans people, but don’t detach yourself from it now. Take on and accept the judgment of error.

I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that you're just not aware but "tranny" (and by extension the nonsense word "trannyism") is a slur and very offensive. For someone who is apparently very concerned about people saying that you're being hateful and offensive I suggest not using offsensive slurs in the future.

even WaPo , one of those media outlet who tends to embrace the craziest radical leftist theories and ideas (like during BLM), is going VERY CLEARLY in favour of the opinion of normal, decent people

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/...

Sales must be going really bad if they pivot like this

Keep in mind this means endorsing a specific Trump platform policy, to keep biological men outside of women sports

There might be as many as 1 whole person in this thread who has argued against the positions taken in that article.

ye so why isn't it absolutely clear in societ as well given the majority of people clearly hate the idea? why isn't every major politician endorsing a full ban for biological men to participate in women sports ?

Why are XY boxers massacring XX boxers at the olympics? and people like coordie cheering on that?

Yeah I'm going to follow what I said the last time you used that exact same absurd hyperbole and choose not to bother engaging with you seriously until you talk in a serious manner.

It's not an absurd hyperbole, it's what happens when you have biological men competing against women in contact sports. Women get hurt, badly. And it should stop, by force of law.

whoopsies, someone accidentally outed themselves as a transphobe

welcome to team hateful bigot anti trans

you may want to read the thread history

if you're genuinely curious, just search "lia" and that'll bring forward plenty of discussion on it and you can see the views of various posters which is more than 1

Btw if some sport segregates AGAINST women in men sports sign me up to abolish that by law as well. If it's voluntary and the woman (no matter if transitioned to a man or not) wants to play with the men, it should always be allowed.

Because it's about the biological advantage, with women who live as men don't have (they are actually at a disadvantage vs biological men), so they should be allowed to compete with men if they so choose.

Like women can compete in all WSOP events, but biological men shouldn't compete in the ladies only.

I decided I was curious so did just that. I found ~1-2 people defending it. Most of the actual discussion seemed to be about locker room issues rather than her competing. The only person who defended it fairly strongly was coordi, who is the 1 person I was thinking of in my initial post, and the only others who came close were a couple of Trolly's drop-in posts - they were more being antagonistic towards arguments that he thought were bad than actual defenses of a position - and uke - which weren't really defending it beyond pointing out that she was competing entirely legitimately within the NCAA rules at the time - and I know uke's position on this very well and he definitely doesn't support trans women competing in elite level sport (the only contention might be on defining "elite level").

Also just to note, you seem to keep posting as if you think that I'm not aware of the conversations that happen regarding trans issues on this forum. I've been posting on this subject, on this forum, for many years. I'm well aware of most of the regulars involved with the discussions and with the way it's been moderated historically.

Uke has been fairly clear that he opposes that yes (only gray area is the threshold, and btw he is wrong, as soon as puberty kick in ALL contacts sport should be segregated at all levels).

But the kyd something violet name, crossnerd and gansta, i think they don't oppose it (i could be wrong). Browser, previous mod, i think he didn't oppose it either.

But i mean 25% of americans are in favor, which very roughly means half of democrats voters

https://news.gallup.com/poll/507023/say-...

that's tens of millions of people, who hold a completly indefensible position, which hurts women badly. Aren't you scared by that, and by any group that panders to those people?

One democrat every 2 holds a position that is utterly indefensible, tragically devastating for women, based on completly false scientific claims, and an ideology that is disastrous for human societies more in general.

I didn’t make the claim. Not my job to back it up.

I'm not sure who the first person you're referring to is but crossnerd and gansta weren't involved in that conversation at all as far as I could see (there certainly weren't any of their posts that showed up directly in the search and I didn't notice them when clicking through some of them to see the context). It wouldn't surprise me if crossnerd was ok with Lia participating but I'd be a little surprised if gansta did. Browser was heavily involved in the conversation around her being in the women's locker room but his only take that I saw on the participation in competition was this:

by browser2920 k

The whole issue of whether a trans woman who went through puberty as a male has a competitive advantage, before or after certain hormone treatments is a fair one to debate.

Conflating the generic question with the article that sparked this which is about specifically elite level sports is disingenuous. For many people there are a completely different set of considerations once you move below elite level and most people's opinions will probably vary a lot for specific sports as well.
