"The Pen:" Live NLHE Chat Thread

It's been about 9.5 years and 350K posts of epicness, but "It Lives, It Lives" can live no more. The OG LLSNL Chat Thread got too big for the servers to handle and had to be retired.

You can take that trip down memory lane here.

Now it is time for a new chat thread, and new epicness.

i

so looking at the first two rides those were "yeah it'll suck but if i commit to doing it slowly i can do it and just finish dead last"

was thinking worst case scenario i get into a serious accident somewhere remote or get serious bike issues in a very remote place and then basically got to carry my bike 10 miles to a road and then beg for a ride to a bike shop or something

but man, looking at that current one, it gave me ptsd of various uphill climbs i've done

i can handle the very slow and gradual ascents, i've ridden across the alps and it was a slog but fine

but like this here, you see those switchbacks - they don't even look that bad now, yet in my memory it felt 10x more extreme

it took me ages to climb those - yes it was rewarding to do it, but once i finished and go to the top, i immediately told myself, thank god it's mostly downhill heading towards sea level from here on out because i don't think i could have handled more of that riding

but by far the worst riding experience i've ever had in my life was on the camino de santiago when because my dad and brother already did the traditional route earlier, the 3 of us pivot and take the winter route on the closing stretch

we knew it had less total elevation as this route clings to the valleys rather than goes directly through the mountains so pilgrims wouldn't be caught in an exposed storm

but that meant instead of a gradual climb and descent, it was non-stop climbing and descending and that was just pure torture

this was by far the worst stretch here where the path stopped following the river to cut across

we'd start at river level, climb up to the top of the ridge, bike down it, climb up yet another ridge, it just never ended

the entire time my brother and father kept talking about how much better the traditional route was

it was just exhausting doing that kind of riding all day

@GD - ty sir, ill let her know!

@RR - its my understanding today is the toughest day and its what causes the most DNFs. Super steep and gnarly all day long.

well i wish her the best of luck, really enjoyed reading her article btw, she's good writer who doesn't get caught up in nonsense but gets straight to the important stuff, something i really appreciate as someone who as demonstrated above, can go on and on forever when "uphill climbs suck" would have sufficed 😀

Brag: I've booked 14 straight winning months at lolLLSNL pokring.

Beat: August 2024 I won $3.

Variance: I can spend that $3 on WHATEVER. I. WANT.

I assume the source of the money for the burger/whatever will be noted over in the FF thread.

GG, i have a very funny story for you

so i'm invited to join a fantasy football league, it's mostly poker players but not of the 2p2 variety

in the draft chat, i'm trying to get to know them, i ask if any post on 2p2

one responds "i used to check it out from time to time, but got sick of all the terrible advice from nits, like that 1-3 pro gobbledygeek who just folded everything but aces"

ETA: Sometimes I'll get comments like "wow, you must be quite card dead, I haven't seen you in a pot in a while". I'll then look at my cards, frustrated sigh fold and quietly comment "jeezus, ****ing pocket jacks again, that's like the fourth time in two rounds". I'll get looks like "I think this guy is actually serious".

Enjoyed both the SPC and GG TRs.

Tired of adulting and want to quit now.

Can I be your guide to the dark side? It's pretty nice.

Without being too specific (feel free to ignore if so), have a target? Seems like I remember from my dad's service that there's certain milestones one must hit to get the best benefits.

I'm just exhausted right now from too much work all at once. I'll prolly be alright once I get through September.

I owe two more years of service as part of the deal from getting the PhD, and will likely serve one more after that. But things almost came to a head when I got an email yesterday telling me they planned to have me move again next summer. Fortunately, I was able to get that sorted out.

garick, just hire a butler

That does not sound like it would get anything off my plate except maybe the water spots from letting them dry in the dishwasher.

Where were they planning to send you?

Wouldn't it have been pretty much guaranteed to be better than Alabama? Or was it Mississippi?

They hadn't got that far yet. They were going to want me to bid on jobs on the list for that move cycle. But I am effing done moving. I volunteered to stay here for my last assignment. Don't love Alabama, but I've got a good job and a nice house. I'll stick it out here until I retire from the Air Force. They had just forgotten to code that I switched assignments this summer, so they thought it was time for me to move.

I bet I could win a ‘woe is me’ battle right now. Exhausting

was wondering about that given your avatar change to something more comforting, hope things get better

That’s a return to my old one. I lost a bet and had to change to a soccer one for a while but then I didn’t know how to change it back. Fortunately friendly mod Mark helped

My list of dramas is too boring to type out but it’s definitely a huge challenge.

Sorry, feely.

Yeah. my woes are all minor, and mostly mundane. Just a lot of them at the moment.

I'm at 30 years at this job this month.

Current ~plan is to have next 5 years at reduced hours, then another 5 years at like half hours at most, and then die of a massive heart attack on the day I officially retire.

I initially read that as "water sports" and was thinking you expect a bit more than usual from a butler.

How do you manage the work/ life balance Squiddy?

Saved up enough money from the gamboolin' to not have to do it no more?

Still have to do the gambool from time to time?

Live a very low cost lifestyle?

Or cross that bridge when you come to it?

I'm always trying to tow the line between working as many years as possible to make sure I'm always extremely comfortable at all ages, but also very aware that the next ~15 years will likely be the last relatively healthy ones where I need to make the most of time (with work being a huge time suck).

I am out the door in roughly 4 years. I could stay maybe a little longer but it's doubtful. I just need to decide what I am going to do post-retirement. Options are good but I need to narrow things down a bit.
