never heard of it

It’s a term to describe people who enter tournaments with no chance of actually winning. They’re dead money.

I don’t know if the term is used in cash games too or not.

It can also refer to blinds, antes and money from players who have folded. Dead money like that may give you odds to call allin, chase draws, bluff, semibluff, etc.

Yes, that too.

Maverick any good? I'm guessing there's not much actual poker in it like most 'poker films' though

'A gambler trying to raise the necessary stake to enter a championship poker game is joined by a wily adventuress who is also headed for the championship, but the pair must overcome a series of obstacles before they get to the game's riverboat venue'

some guy next to me watched it at the table and said he really enjoyed it

It's entertaining. Garner's great. But it's not a poker movie in any form that modern poker kids would recognize.

solid 20% RT score so far on small sample

Richard Roper (Chicago Sun Times) gave it 3 out of 4 stars

We might not ever get the long-rumored “Rounders 2,” but in a genre that is filled with movies that turn out to be busted hands when it comes to authenticity, “Dead Money” is a solid entry. This is a poker movie that gets it right.

I have an amazing concept and beginning of a script for Rounders 2. Sucks that it will never get picked up thanks to that fat pervert Harvey and intellectual property rights.

Mike & his wife, a Jo lookalike, meet for lunch at a curry in a hurry shop in a Summerlin strip mall. He tells her he thinks his boss can get him four tickets to the Raiders game Sunday but she reminds him theyÂ’re going to a rehearsal dinner for her nieceÂ’s wedding that night, and the twins will be practicing their violin duet.

As MikeÂ’s pulling the SUV back onto Rainbow he sees a bum holding a Homeless Vet sign and walking a quarter with his other hand. He looks in the rearview, but then his wifeÂ’s on the speaker asking him to stop at Costco on his way home and pick up a case of Depends she can drop off at her dadÂ’s care facility in the morning, the landscapers want him to venmo another $150 before they show up Saturday, and the twins want vegan pizza AGAIN for dinner.

i stopped caring about that site when Roger Ebert Died...not like i really care all that much for what a critic thinks but at least Ebert was fair and open minded considering he would watch everything from romance to action and everything in between...

Shame his name is being associated with other peoples critique of movies.

Loosely related (and even that's giving it credit), a while back I got curious and looked up the combined tournament winnings of Ram Vaswani, Joe Beevers and the Boatman Brothers. Why did I look this up, you may ask? Because I wanted to know where the Hendon Mob collectively ranked on Hendon Mob.

Just looked again. As of this post, they have a total of $13,694,388, just ahead of Sorel Mizzi for 88th place.

Review:

Saw Dead Money on the day it premiered. Showing at one theater for this week only in NYC. Five people including us in theater.

It’s best to think the film is as two movies.
1. A (very) B movie thriller comedy
2. A niche underground poker drama

Poker scenes are well done. Up there in the Molly’s Game / Rounders tier.

Realistic hands and situations. Accurate table talk, thinking/analysis. Clear that producers spent time in LA private game scene and suspect that cameo’d players helped fund/advise.

I died laughing when kidnapper told protagonist to ride his heater (instead of lock up the win) or his girlfriend would get it.

Likely not in theaters long, recommend seeing while you can.
