that sucks that even with the economy of scale they have going, your kids can get better quality food at a bar for lunch than the cafeteria

sounds almost like you are a bit of a leftist wanting government control over nutritious and high quality school food 😀

I am discussing things as they are, not as i would like them to be.

I would abolish public schools to begin with (all vouchers) and allow competition to exist with all sort of setups then people decide, as with everything else.

the public shouldn't provide any good or service that the private sector in competition can provide

what does this food fight have to do with the 2024 USA election?

it's an electoral topic

this i think is a terrible idea

it'd turn the education industry into a for profit initiative where there'd be a lot of scamming and children would suffer whenever their parents would make bad decisions regarding enrollment

would be absolutely catastrophic and essentially create a caste system

there is a ton of room out there for education reform, but i am of the steadfast belief that anything which impacts society to that degree (as well as anything of strategic importance such as healthcare/utlities/transportation networks/etc should all be run by the state, not that there can't be a private option, but that the basic needs must be satisfied by the state

you sir want thunderdome but we don't need another hero, we need a society

you have to explain why Walmart is better that state run supermarkets but the same couldn't happen with schools though. same with private farms instead of state farms.

and food is obviously far more important than education and healthcare.

and the state... can guarantee the basic needs if you want to by giving you money to buy the food which is infinitely better than the state running the farms and the shops.

if the state is horribly worse than the market at delivering that basic necessity (and most people agree it is), you need a lot of intellectual masturbation to claim the same doesn't generalize to anything else which can have competition in supply by private people (of all your examples only transportation and some utilities and only in some cases don't qualify).

but anyway, I just answered your take that I sounded like a leftist because when forced at gunpoint, against my will, to have public schools, I have preferences on how they should be managed

Easily one of your top 3 worst ideas yet, and I say that with due regard and astonishment given your collective body of work of terrible ideas…

Food is a commodity, healthcare and schooling are not.

You're right in that some people who are like, hard core libertarians would find ideological ground for opposition to school lunches existing. Though I imagine many would want the lunches to be good if they must exist.

Unfortunately, that's not the case in America. A big part of the Republican message in 2012 was cutting school lunches, and this was before Trump dragged the party even farther into a pit of cruelty and hate. Whether or not kids should get free meals at school is very much a political issue with one side being pro and the other anti.

Japan has amazing school lunches that are very healthy and by all reports taste good as well. I don’t see why we can’t have that here in America as well.

I do think school lunches are generally disgusting but there are some schools in my region that are doing way better on that including fresh fruit and veggies, lean or no meat, etc.

trump is a rino--change my mind.

The most consistent defense here/elsewhere during his term was that he's actually just a regular old republican+mean tweets ie rino+mean tweets. Mean tweets are basically meaningless so all you're left with is 100% rino 😀

yes this is correct ofc. and ironically all of the Rhinos are endorsing Kamala so what is the difference anyway?

Cuz both sides are the same, you see

you don't roll the dice on the education of the future generations and hope the privatization experiment hits the top of the range results

walmart itself is extremely regulated, basically every product they sell and even how they must transport it and how to operate the forklifts in their warehouses come under government scrutiny - so to use walmart as an example, the private schools would still have millions of invisible hands from the government guiding everything from the type of chairs they could use to which textbooks and grading standards

Forget schools, I think you'd see a pretty big difference in health of diet between the average American and Japanese adult. Which filters down to children and finally schools.

yeah it royally pisses me off that everyone's like "asians are just skinny" no you idiots, it's a group of people who by and large care about their health and don't overeat and will care about maintaining their figure even when middle aged

they have the same inherent skills at getting fat as we do, as demonstrated by how much weight they gain in old age when they don't care anymore

Yeah the religion of “both-sides” ism is tough to argue on school lunch.

I’m sure you would love China to educate our children ….

Look at checkraise answer.
Education and healthcare are not commodities .

Now the private sector is there to make money period .
Not to give the best product but the best acceptable product at the cheapest price ….
Seeing how goods are lasting so poorly in times length compare to like 2-3 decades ago ( ever heard of planned obsolescence?) .

Sounds crazy but yes for national interest , sometimes the cheapest price does matter , the quality matters more .
Healthcare , education ,military, water (flint water crisis ? ) , etc are some examples.

The concept of the private sector have for first priority to benefit its consumer at his expenses is hilarious .

Ps: Chinese economy is massively manage by the government and China provide efficiently 25% of all manufacturing in the world .

This is a whole can of worms, but I don't think the Republican party really has an ideology.

Dems go through the motions of some weird version of neoliberalism a bit more convincingly.

Lots of Rep voters resent tax money being squandered. They hear (true) stories of tons of uneaten lunches, disgusting food, etc.

Quick search shows 60% support for universal free lunch. Support for poor kids getting lunch can only be higher.

IMO (perhaps wrong) it's kinda obvious that if most people support a really bad version of school lunches, even more would support a good version.

If you show people that Japan vid and ask if we should do that, only the fringe will say no, imo.

What is it like in the UK?

by rickroll k

there's a major misconception here as well as an error in logic

1 - the amount kids are charged for lunches, even if they pay full price, is only a fraction of the actual cost - the amount they pay is intended to help offset the cost slightly and is never the operating budget

2 - a growing number school cafeterias are outsourced to private companies - this ensures they will source the cheapest possible ingredients - while it often can make se

Yeah. I think it is a valid issue that many kids are addicted to and only eat junk. (Another red flag for our society). But you can't allow that to be the rule. It's just a hurdle to jump.

I guess eating nothing but nuggets is in the same ball park as smoking as far as damage to health and well being.

I'm sure when they transitioned away from smoking in HS some kids had nicotine withdrawal issues and some parents said "muh paw smoked and lived to be 90."

You try to work around that.

Rickroll, it’s one thing to make that argument using data and statistics (from reputable sources), such as BMI, health outcomes, life expectancy, etc.

It’s not acceptable to make that argument using racial stereotypes (yes, even “positive” ones) and memes. I’ve removed the image and YouTube video for that reason.

Thanks 😀

Actually you could say “thin culture” immigrants when they come in the US , trying to imitate the great “American life style” they all miraculously becomes overweight quickly (study from pew pew research if I remember correctly )

We are just what we eat (for like 90% of the population) .

I read the article and I am still not sure if they are celebrating Biden or ripping on Trump for not deporting enough.

I will not be reading past the headlines anymore.
