Moderation Questions
Welcome! This is the beta version of the new TwoPlusTwo forum.

Moderation Questions

The last iteration of the moderation discussion thread was a complete disaster. Numerous attempts to keep it on topic failed, and it became a general discussion thread with almost no moderation related posts at all. And those that were posted were so buried in non-mod posts that it became a huge time drain on the mods to sort through them. Then, when off topic posts were deleted posters complained about that.

This led to the closing of the mod discussion thread, replaced by the post report/pm approach. This has filtered out lots of noise, but has resulted at times in the General Discussion Thread turning into a quasi-mod thread. This is not desirable, but going back to the old mod thread is also not a workable option.

Therefore, I have created this new moderation thread, but with a different purpose and ground rules than previous mod threads. The purpose of this thread is to provide a place for posters to pose questions to the mods about how policies are applied; to bring to the mods attention posts they think are inappropriate and reach the level of requiring mod action; and for mods to communicate to posters things like changes or clarifications to policies, bannings, etc.

Now let me tell you what this thread is NOT a place for. It is not for nonmoderation related posts, even if the discussion originates from a comment in in a mod related post. It is not for posters to post their opinions about other posters or whether a poster should be banned. It is not to rehash past grievances about mod decisions from months or years ago. The focus of this thread will be recent posts that require action now. Or questions about current policies and enforcement.

So basically, this is a thread to ask mods questions. Which means, pretty much that only mods should be answering those questions. If a poster asks why a particular post was deleted or allowed, only a mod can answer that. Everyone else who wants to jump in with their opinion or their mod war story needs to stay out of it. It just increases the noise to signal ratio and does nothing to answer the question.

Everyone needs to understand that this thread has very different rules than the old mod thread and any other thread. Any non-moderation post will be deleted on sight. Not moved to the appropriate thread, just deleted. So don't waste your time crafting a masterpiece post about wars or transgender issues or the presidential election and then post it in this thread. It will be gone. Also, this isnt a thread for general commentary about our mods performance. Posting "browser sucks as a mod" or any such posts that don't actually ask about a policy or request a mod action will be deleted. Everyone is entitled to their opinion about the moderation of this forum. But this thread isnt for complaining about mods. You are free to go to the ATF forum and make your concerns about modding in this forum there.

So with that intro, this thread is open for those who need to bring questions about mod policies or bring inappropriate posts to the mods attention. Again, it is NOT a thread for group discussions about other posters or for other posters to answer questions directed to mods.

We'll see how this goes. If you have what you feel is an open issue raised in the General Discussion Thread, please copy that post or otherwise reintroduce the issue here.

Thanks.

Nate's posts seem fine.

Not sure how saying he has a different version should be considered problematic.

Didn't say it was problematic. JFC can you people read?

I went back to double check and no I did not quote you.

So, since you interjected your comment into a back and forth I was having, and your comment could very reasonably be interpreted as responding to my post, quote who you were talking to then. How long have you been posting on this (or any) forum?

Btw i looked at CN recent messages as suggested by jalfrezi, but i couldn't find the message where she explaines why rafiki was banned

Multiple people raised issue with Nate's post. I was responding to the issue at large and not any specific post, hence not quoting any specific poster.

by Crossnerd k

It’s not very juicy. The usual complainers were complaining in here; Rafiki made a few posts gloating that he had certain people on ignore, I made a joke (not entirely without suspicion tbh) that I was beginning to wonder if it was actually Rafiki on the account. Rafiki immediately assumed I was accusing him of multiaccounting as a new poster, IMBLUEtheONE, and subsequently blew up both this thread and the IP thread will trolling about how

There is still of course the issue of what information Rafiki was trying to blackmail Cross over.

What's wrong with a mod doing IP checks? What's there to expose?

As a segue, I have had it happen on more than one occasion in halcyon days of yore, where I was openly posting on a "dupe" account where all the mods of the forums I was posting in knew exactly who I was; and would wake up one day to find I was banned by random mods from other forums that were doing IP check sweeps, I guess out of boredom.

So rafiki was just "I know what you did last summer" and didn't specify?

That's bad and demonstrates low character. I don't think perma is right or even strategic insofar as the ban was not a self-ban. After all, it would be trivial for rafiki to start a new account, evade detection, and do whatever he threatened. But whatever, good people can disagree on whether it should be a perms or what good strategy is.

What interests me as far as it is a reflection on you CN, is, was this a perma just because of his actions, or because they were directed at a mod? If one of us PMs another one of us “I KNOW, you don’t think I KNOW??”, is that a perma?

What interests me as far as

He specifically gave me the ultimatum to apologize or perma. And I did send a copy of the entire interaction to another mod for review.

But to answer your hypothetical, I would look very harshly at abusive PMs being sent between posters. That’s just not a thing that should be happening here.

CN,

I don't necessarily expect the question before last to be answered. I understand it's possible there's something here that's none of our business and you just want to let it go. Just a point that I would hope you would agree on is that an offense directed at a mod is in no way worse than the same offense directed at a non-mod.

Thx. I typed my last post without seeing this.

I absolutely agree. If anything I think I was allowing behavior directed toward me because I’m a mod that I wouldn’t allow to be directed toward another poster, and that’s not tolerable for me in terms of setting my own healthy boundaries.

For example, I wouldn’t tolerate a regular poster trolling another poster that they can’t tell Jews apart and must think they all look the same, so why am I tolerating that when it’s directed toward me? That’s not questioning authority; that’s just being an ******* because you think I’ll have to take it. I don’t.

How about if the POGers just took their nevernending drama back to POG?

Just the pitchfork crew...as in who cares.

Still waiting for Trolly to tell me what I'm lying about (he seems to have forgotten about the claim). At least that is somewhat interesting to me.

by Crossnerd k

I made a joke (not entirely without suspicion tbh) that I was beginning to wonder if it was actually Rafiki on the account.

I would suggest that in a thread specifically labeled for moderation questions that it is poor form for a mod to make jokes like that. Not that in the end it would have changed this situation, but it's not a good look.

#IStandWithCrossnerd

I would generally agree it was probably in bad taste (poor modding form?) to make that joke in that thread towards that poster. A gaff if you will

Having a manic outburst where you are spamming threads and blasting off PMs to a bunch of different people is how unhinged individuals respond to a gaff.

Geez, some guys are having problems with...... every thing.

Some posters just want to have fun. But their definition of fun goes against common sense decency. Thus the common statement "X just banned himself". You may agree or disagree but as Rococo and others have stated.... it's pretty easy to post your thoughts without getting banned around here. If you don't want to get perma-banned, don't post things that will get you perma-banned.

IMO, there should be zero tolerance for anyone that steps over that line in the sand. Zero. The fact that the line is ever-changing in some of your minds is amazing. Don't post in a *****ty manner. I also have a problem with posters that jump all over CN. She's doing great and is moderating to the best of her abilities...as we all do. We mods are all human and can be expected to do human things. And.... we aren't going to change.

Lighten Up, Frances' of the P&S forum.

tbh i got a 1 month ban, and a 15 days ban, without breaking any forum rule so i kinda disagree with the bold.

Latest ban was because i lacked empathy toward a group of people and i dared to say i couldn't care if they died because of their actions, which is something which is an incredibly normal political position by many people and that doesn't break any rule at all.

It's not particularly easy to have rightwing opinions (even mainstream ones) on many topics and post them here without getting banned.

I mean you said it about innocent people experiencing a hurricane who end up believing misinformation, you thought it was good they would take themselves out of the gene pool lol
