The costs of trans visibility

The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

Because John Money created the theory of gender. His experiments on the Reimer twins demonstrate he was was more interested in ideology than medicine, rejected biological reality in favour of subjectivism and violated the Hippocratic Oath.

there's a lot of reasons for suicide, construction workers are 5x more likely to kill themselves than nurses - but nobody in their right mind is going to argue that statistic is due to construction workers not being accepted by society

Ive had a few so won’t respond to all of this but hopefully have time to eventually as I think you’re posting in good faith for the most part

You contradict yourself here as you’retrying to compare a country with entirely different culture (over simplifying as well, the line of acceptance was not straight up for Thailand, and it is by no means a utopia for those who identify as relevant to this thread, it’s still an evolving situation.)

I also personally dont care about what study you show or whether you ask me to prove my point, kindness generally makes people happier and happier people are less likely to kill themselves

Very gauche to quote myself, but I’ll pat myself on the back because I make a lot of sense here. You’re trying to find a reason to argue against this. It’s telling of some bias (maybe not hate, bias)

i'm not arguing against kindness in the slightest

i just think you're oversimplifying it and if the trans experience were as kind as the typical experience then they'd still be killing themselves off in droves - i'm not saying don't be kind - i'm agree with that

i also really think you should spend some time in non tourist sea where you'll interact with trans who aren't involved in the sex industy = ie don't go to pattaya and it'll be a really eye opening experience how nobody bats an eye when a ladyboy enters the room

but again, this is the problem here, your bias is causing you to view me as a villain who is arguing there's no need to be kind to people - which i've never even come close to saying - that's just how you interpret - this is the problem here, the meta of transactivism is to view anyone who holds a different perspective as an evil bigoted villain - this is what i was broaching regarding cultish karen style bullying, "you don't see the need to list your prounous, you are thus advocating nobody be kind to trans" which is just a wild supposition

like i'm genuinely insulted that you would attribute that I was arguing that when i never said anything on that, that was all your own "read between the lines" and it wasn't real

Hey man I just read the one post you quoted. It was a great line from Trolly. Plaudits all round to him. Dunno what on earth you are upset about.

I had just wanted Trolly to answer a simple question and he refused to do so. I wasn't upset about anything.

just put him on block, he's only engaging with you to find creative ways to get around the no insults rule

it's not a contradiction

trans in thailand live a much more normal and accepted lives

they walk down the street and nobody bats an eye nor says anything mean to them

they generally decide they are ladyboys at a young age so most grew up with them in school and are used to it

in addition, buddhism is extremely conducive to embracing the idea of being trans

it's 10x better to be trans in thailand than in the usa, and so yes, it is relevant and not a contradiction that if the trans in thailand are also killing themselves at extraodinarily high rates then you need to concede that it's not a direct correlation and there are more underlying factors involved

No this was different. Trolly had made an actual substantive claim that scientists know more about gender than Matt Walsh, and I simply wanted to know what that was. He has refused to answer that question.

The only logical conclusion is that Trolly is either full of **** or that scientists don't actually know anything about gender.

What is the state of homosexuality in Thailand?

that too, but i looked at it because you mentioned he wasn't posting in good faith all his responses were carefully worded to insult you indirectly so he wouldn't get banned - he's just a bad person

by Luckbox Inc P

What is the state of homosexuality in Thailand?

can you be a little more specific?

if you're talking about gay men, they seemed to be far less than ladyboys, but then again that could be because ladyboys tend to socialize with straight men whereas gay men are in a more closed off community/gay bars that i wasn't going to

it's also very difficult to socialize with asian men in general as they're a bit more guarded/closed off so you're at a bar and the guys ignore you and don't talk but the women and ladyboys will walk over to you and ask if you want to play a game of pool so those are the people you socialize with and talk to, not the guys

You addressed it. Mostly I had wanted to know how the gay scene compared to the trans scene and it seems like the answer is that it's hard to tell but perhaps less.

by rickroll P

this is a dishonest strawman attack

i'm not "extremely upset" about it in the slightest, i just think it's stupid and a poor allocation of time and resources when we have so many other problems to fix

Vending machine companies should be building houses for the poor?

You sweet summer child, you think market dynamics are the reason for the machines.

Jfc Brian, I can never take anything you post in bfi seriously now that you think that’s a market driven decision.

So, is this some sort of stupid vampire lineage theory that we trace the current practitioners motives back to the original actor? Or is it more of the apple in Eden and original sin?

This is a nonsense answer despite it getting a three ring approval from the peanut gallery. Try proving the actual facts you alleged.

Gotta love that the guy worried about time and resources allocation is in here arguing day and night about forced pronoun usage, dating sites that don't disclose original genitalia in profiles and tampon machine placement in foreign countries as focal points of transgender issues.

That would certainly be a better use of their labor and resources.

Think I have to take back what I said about you mostly posting in good faith so just gonna let you have this one. (As in no need to talk in circles anymore, you win.) Weird thing for say from someone who wishes to be taken seriously

Actually found a surprising lack of correlation between QOL and suicide rates which I found quite interesting so have some takeaways from this convo atleast. I was wrong in my assumptions here

you missed a bunch of bryce posts in another thread where he was comparing lia thomas favorably to jackie robinson - it was a joke that played on that

Yeah that validates this being a thread to not engage in for someone who is curious

If thread is a place for to opportunely drunk on people who post genuinely (and in Bryce’s case likely has a closer connection to this than most people) it’s only rage bait for me

That’s the internet though. Just not for me

db, you've openly said i'm a horrible person who advocates against kindness despite never saying that

now that i make a lighthearted joke once again i'm evil

were you not saying/implying extremely nasty things about me?

c'mon man, you're not just drinking it, you're swimming in koolaid if you can't see this for what it is

i haven't made any insults towards you nor questioned your integrity - why do you feel that it's open season to do so with me?

The internet is no kind of place for jokes.
