The costs of trans visibility

Yesterday, Dylan Mulvaney broke her silence: https://www.tiktok.com/@dylanmulvaney/vi....

For context, this is a trans influencer who built a 10 million strong following on TikTok. She took a brand deal with budweiser to post an ad on an instagram, and the anti-trans right went absolutely ballistic, calling for a boycott, condemning the company, and to some perhaps unknowable degree it influenced that Budweiser sales dropped by a 1/4 and

. Dylan speaks more personally about the effect of the hatred on her.

What strikes me about this story is that it is just about visibility. This isn't inclusion in sports or gender-affirming care for minors, it was just that a trans person was visible. This wasn't even visibility in a TV commerical that a poor right-winger is forced to see, it was an ad on her own instagram page. We're all in our own social media algorithm influenced bubbles, but from my vantage point it really has seemed that in the last year or so things have just gotten worse for trans people and the backlash to even minor visibility is growing.

We need to do better.

just pure professional victimhood and anyone who mildly views things differently is a terrible person

You sweet summer child, you think market dynamics are the reason for the machines.

Jfc Brian, I can never take anything you post in bfi seriously now that you think that’s a market driven decision.

I didn't say anything about market dynamics. I merely made a suggestion that if you are upset with the vending machine people flooding the men's bathroom market with tampons instead of fixing important problems that you are implying that they obviously not be in the vending machine business at all. No matter their wares, they are not solving important problems

However, and as a complete irrelevancy to the rest of the conversation, everything with a checkbook is a market participant and therefore market dynamics covers it.

I'm a little out of touch, but I cannot imagine that a tampon costs more than $100 or so. It is worth about 0% of your time to think about it. Very serious misallocation of resources by you to spend more than a second thinking about it.

you're not posting in good faith if you think that's a matter of vending resources either

you're much smarter that, be better

by rickroll k

you missed a bunch of bryce posts in another thread where he was comparing lia thomas favorably to jackie robinson - it was a joke that played on that

I did not do this, that is your bizarre smear of me humanizing the story in one or two posts in regards to the kia thomas incident.

You don’t know anything about this issue, so you can’t claim to say what is or isn’t posting in good faith. Earlier, when you defended white supremacist and transphobe meisners comments( who is banned) you said that people were paying attention to his arguments that could have been worded better in your opinion but there wasn’t anything wrong with his positions. The reality is despite the nastiness and low quality of his arguments and positions , his arguments were better and more informed than yours which is why I stopped responding to you in this thread, and me and people like ganstaman debated him. A deep dive into your posts about gay and trans issues produces at best a profound ignorance of what it means to be gay or means to be trans. It’s ok to be ignorant but
Ganstaman is a talented psychiatrist with experience working with trans kids.
BM2 is a smart trader who has clinical psychological experience and personal experiences with gay family members
I am gay and received genital surgery as a child

and you , someone who bases all your opinions on obvious stereotypes and confused understanding ( much more so than meisner although less hateful) of lgbtq issues want to dominate us in a thread by persistence and I have no idea why. I addressed many of your points directly and all of your points in these threads when you count my discussions with other people, and repeatedly. It’s difficult to unpack all this when you repeat ideas that have been debunked repeatedly over and over in some outrageous but authoritariative manner. I’m not trolling or calling you a bigot in this post even. What I am saying is that you don’t even know enough about the issue to even begin to have an a serious discussion about it.

Pretty sure he did invent gender though.

Thought Turing was gay?

Turing was gay. That’s not relevant to my post above though

Are you sure jon money invented gender

OR
are you just going to go in circles with misinformation you found from a right wing source to bully pro trans people who might not know anything about jon money for 100’s and 100’s of posts like you have with previous arguments.

by rickroll k

bryce, the internet is written in pen, you absolutely did that and like 4-5 different posters called out the absurdity of it

no I did not. Stop trolling.

by spaceman Bryce k

no I did not. Stop trolling.

you did but i did change my mind and ninja deleted it because i like you and figure it's best to let it go, you're too quick though for my ninja deletes :(

i'm going to be in kc for a few days this upcoming week visiting some old friends if you want to meet in person, i don't blame you if you don't though but pm me if you do

can you quote me where I defended white supremacist and transphobic statements?

by rickroll k

No I didn’t. Making false claims about people and repeatedly yelling over them things which almost all the serious posters in this thread have repeatedly told you is wrong and obviously confused is not smoothed over by aww shucks I like you posts and outwardly friendly posts. It’s not ok.

do you not know what i'm referring to or do you know but have a different interpretation of your comments?

Can that right wing source be Wikipedia? If so then yes.

And lol you said Turning killed himself for being mis-gendered.

Is it your claim that Turing was both gay and trans?

by rickroll k

There’s a difference between bullying people, repeatedly calling people dipshits , making up false and misleading claims over 100’s of posts and “having a different interpretation “ are two very different things. I didn’t say that. You have a long history of saying things that people did not say.

JOHN

Right here Bryce.

this doesn't answer my question

furthermore, you guys are way off base and are interpreting pretty standard mainstream points of view as hateful and transphobic

my best friend growing up was gay, i lived with two lesbians in college, one of my roomates in China for 2 years was a gay Chinese gay

I've been surrounded with lgbtq+ my entire life

so your notions are just absurd and it's just pure cope/victim mentality that someone else has a different point of view, therefore it's coming from a hateful or bigoted place

that's just such a cheap default mechanism

you literally just called me a white supremacist (seriously wtf?) and then when i ask you to provide evidence and show your work for that kind of slander you just ignore it and blather on about "i must not know any gays and am ignorant" - which again is just a cheap and cowardly response because your position is so weak it can't stand to a rational discussion and needs those ideological crutches

by Luckbox Inc k

Right here Bryce.

he's going to ignore you and pretend he never said that one as well

by rickroll k

Addressing your statement directly, I am sure that you realize that I am teasing you. I am fairly certain that I am doing a pretty good job. You could do a better job of finding an actual problem to focus on. Be better.

Back to the actual matter, I am quite certain that it is an inconsequential allocation of resources. So small as to not be worth worrying about whether it is a misallocation.

In fact, given this thread, I believe it to be an excellent allocation of resources. I've gained at least an hour of amusement (retail value $300) and if we multiply that by the total addressable market, the numbers are staggering. If we include the value it brings to those who enjoy righteous indignation about tiny unimportant things (I am not sure we should, as that market seems saturated), it is unprecedented value for cost.

Despite the diminishing marginal returns of the humor component, I am sure Losern and RR will continue to rage about tampons dispensers in public restrooms, and expect supporting indignation, in this thread.

There you go again with the false and personal attacks like you like to do.

Let me be clear I do not care how you lead your life and everyone should be treated with kindness.

Though I do not support treatments on children that have life long effects nor do I support biological men competing against women or those same men in women's locker rooms

And yes I think its downright idiotic to mandate that all government regulated industries must put feminine Hygiene products in men's washrooms .

by lozen k

Canadian Government has mandated that all federally regulated businesses must provide free menstruation products in all the bathrooms.
One Political women tweeted .

Broken YouTube Link

by lozen k

Oh and I must apologize I missed Justin’s major accomplishment while in office

Thanks to Justin all men can get free feminine products including Tampons in any federally regulated building

Now I don’t have to worry about that untimely period I may have

by lozen k

A dozen 2 or 3 over a few weeks. It doesn't bother me it just doesn't make sense because she is a biological male and does not need a sports bra or tampon.
Even the Bud Light thing it cost them 6 billion in market value. I took Business in school and marketing is all about your target market

by lozen k

I'm sorry when a company chooses a man to represent a sports bra or a man to represent a Tampon the world's a screwed up place

As well I said all the power to Dylan for raking in as many $$ as possible weather he believes he is a woman or just doing it for the $$$

Loooooooool, your tampon jokes are hysterical.

it's a logistical cost, time spent discussing and debating it, bringing it to the forefront of the public zeitgeist

it's getting looked at prominently and as a result we are not discussing things like lack of highspeed rail or that the majority of our bridges require repair and there's a 40 year backlog to fix them

this is 1% bathroom tampons and 99% general frustration with out inept government though - so perhaps you're right in that I'm inappropriately creating a whipping boy here

Of course, people being accommodating to transgender people is definitely why infrastructure isn't being built in America, totally rational take.

Did you disagree with the notion that political capital is always limited, and anytime we spend some of it for x everything else suffers relatively in terms of less consideration, less effort spent toward trying to define and solve that problem and so on?

It might be counterintuitive but every time you talk about something in the public arena while holding political power, you are also saying that everything else is less important than that.
